And those two teams have the best paint threats in the league in their FSAs. I think that's the best explanation for that. Like JMF in his prime giving his perimeter teammates better looks because of his gravity. On the flip side, if you don't have a paint threat your thinking is better a low percentage 3 than a low percentage 2 with the opposing FSA lurking in the paint. Another proof is when Malick made a lob from Cagu in the final finals game in OT (or the 4th) he established that he needed to be defended by Kouame in his two man game with Cagu, Cagu now had some space when doing PNR. Kouame will not switch nor hedge. Mamu will have some delay going over the switch. The little bit of opening caused by Malick being a threat in the paint allowed Cagu the chance to be the hero.
Even the best, Steph, had to establish that the other players on the floor were also threats or he wouldn't have the space to shoot.
Players like Pogoy and Rosario were bricking wide open corner 3s during SEA games with Fajardo on the inside attracting most of the defense lmaoo. Even the horrible outings of Yeng's Gilas shot fucking terribly against Kazakhstan and Qatar and that team had mfing Blatche and Japeth, it almost looked fake that they actually shot 9.4% 3pt fg against Qatar holy mother of dogshit. Not much better with the more recent Chotty team who shot 20% from 3 against New Zealand's second stringers and 30% against a weak Indian team and that's with Kouame inside, PBA players may just be absolutely terrible shooters, stormtroopers of Asia.
