Philippines Senior National Team Thread Vol. V

  • Thread starter Thread starter IPC2
  • Start date Start date
maybe, the PBA can insert an all-PBA team but if they continuous to have disastrous stints in the national team, the league's credibility will continue to dwindle to the public, especially with the encouraging results of Gilas Cadets under Tab and Nenad.

The PBA is a potent poison cocktail of players with horrible tendencies(not necessarily individually untalented) and immature coaching. The reason an all amateur is observably more successful handled by a coach with a deeper understanding of sports beyond just drawing up plays just proves that all the crap that pinoy ballers are known for like overt physicality that leads to fouls, bad defense, unreliable shooting, over dribbling develops in the PBA and reinforced by the coaches there instead of corrected. Imagine if players like Bolick were handled by Tab after that FilOil stint a long time ago, he would be a much more appropriate international player like Dwight and Thirdy who were much more effective during the NZL and India games and by no coincidence do those two just happen to play outside the country.

Doesn't help that a lot of the still existing PBA fans (like my brother-in-law) are from the old school, the same kind of people who think 1990s basketball is better than modern-day basketball. Kesehodang modern-day basketball is all about shooting 3s, no dominant bigmen like Shaq who literally lives under the basket, and zero physicality kuno while the 1990s is more like Fight Club than basketball.

I can already see the Pogoys and Rosarios being obliterated by Wembanyama hahaha lol. I hope the KBL and B-league guys are available for this time frame. this will prove to be a test for gilas, on how to score on a team with immense length and athleticism

So far, I only have 6 Sure ins for Gilas 2023 WC

1. NP (JC or Nba Caliber or Ange)

2. Kai

3. AJ (healthy)

4. Dwight

5. Baltazar

6. Tamayo

Thats it. Then maybe add a legit PG like Kiefer and a legit shooter like heading.
Then other 4 slots will be fought by Guards and Wings prospects. Bigs are locked already

This 6 bigs,is a pretty good lineup and the rest will be a toss up combo F/G,PG/SG,speaking of guards,Bolick should be one of the PGS.

To be fair, I think a dominant big man like Shaq would beat GSW black and blue. GSW would be forced to double all the time on defense, while Shaq would have no problem keeping up with switches since he was that athletic. Sorry for the sudden analysis.

The PBA could theoretically have their cake and eat it. FIBA rules, but keep the 90s flair like handchecking. That would force coaches to learn the European style for starters, while not canceling out player individualism which Pinoy ballers are known for. I think Nenad successfully implemented that system with the college boys in only 2 weeks against South Korea.

With playing pro abroad now an option for many collegiate players, we can forget about the PBA.

I'm hoping that they get back to the 3 conference per year so that the coaches and players will be too busy for the national team and we can harness players for the NT from the UAAP/NCAA and the most promosing among them will play pro abroad.

That lost in the SEA Games really soured me to the PBA. I'm not mad anymore that they are hesitant to lend players. I now want them to not stick their nose to the national team...because everytime we see success, they butt in and just mess things up with their bara bara style.

I hope the EASL keeps Ginebra and TNT (Looking at Chot Reyes) very busy that they'll leave the NT alone.

With Kai determined in chasing his dreams to the NBA, can we really expect him for NT duty calls?

We need to be realistic and develop/find big guys in case Kai is not available when he is needed.

I often forget how fast was prime Shaq. Was he fast enough that teams can't just pull him out of the rim like modern NBA teams do to the likes of Gobert?

I thought the old heads' issue with FIBA rules is that maninipis yung tawag. The slightest contact is called with no room for physicality.

TNT can't play in the EASL. The PBA said so, so that TNT can reinforce the team in the windows.

The TNT did so well in the SEA games no? /sarcasm

They can excuse the 2 weeks practice but the delegate to the Korea friendlies also had two weeks practice - that was even a mostly collegiate squad.

The underperformers were mostly TNT players. Looking at Montalbo, Pogoy, and Troy. They're good so we won't forfeit, but if we wanna win (for example, the Asia Cup and WC), they should be out. The collegiate squad had upgrades in talent over those TNT guys.

As for the 2 weeks practice, everyone but Abando and Quiambao had already played together under Tab's system, so there's already chemistry.

The TNT boys have been together for long and most were even returnees from Window 1 under Dickel. You'd expect at least these men to do well together and carry the team but they didn't.

It might have been better if SBP sent the whole Ginebra or Meralco team to the SEA Games

If it was a Gilas team handled by Choke Reyes who played vs. Korea, Gilas would have been humiliated by an average margin of 20 pts./game.

And Choke would be so quick to throw excuse like: "We had trained for only 2 weeks lang kasi & we were playing a full force Korean National team in its home soil"

But we like it or not, They will be there in windows 4 and 5, where UAAP and NCAA will start again their season... We don't have a full line up that time, even Kouame will not be available... Also it might like SJ and RJ will not participate because they have to be there in their respective KBL teams because they have to participate regular commitments in KBL, they are new there so it will be understandable... Only Thirdy, Kiefer, Carino and Ramos will only available on windows 4 and 5 because they already been there before... The biggest question is who will be Ange replacement as NP from windows 4 and 5...

Yeah, they will be there in those windows to avoid a forfeiture, that's really the only good thing I can see out of this. So TNT boys, Javi, Arana, Shaun, Mamu, then a replacement NP.

I should have said that there was a talent and coaching difference as well. The collegiate boys not only have more upside, but are better fits for the international game, and have more current talent.

There might be issues with availability, like some here said, so best to have at least 20-25 backup players currently in the country, whether in the PBA or from collegiate leagues. The players should either have FIBA potential in terms of upside and/or talent, and should ideally have the size for their FIBA positions. Then, maybe have Nenad or Tab train the players for their FIBA positions, and then install a good offensive and defensive system, so that they already know what to do regardless of the personnel. Need an offseason's worth of training, though.

Personally, though, I think most should come from college and high school. Right now, there are only a handful of PBA players in their prime who are good for FIBA basketball. Have Javi, Mamu, Shaun, and Arana train with the team, ideally under Tab or Nenad, and then call up the likes of Lazaro, Ong, Jordi GDL, Torculas, Eusebio, Raven Cortez, and even some other HS prospects.
