Philippines Senior National Team Thread Vol. V

chiu's so much better the last time i saw him in gilas. i think he's got the 3rd-string center position locked, no need to get a pba player for that position

kai
edu
kouame
tamayo
chiu

that frontline should be good enough for 2023. might need a pba big if we're getting clarkson instead of kouame

This line up will be a surprise team come FIBA Asia cup... Just pray to have Kouame back before FIBA Asia (I'm OK if he sit down in 3rd window, we are qualified already, We can beat India in this line up anytime) then Thirdy... Also we need to cut from either one of Kiefer, RJ and SJ... Too much PG in this line up... I would put Carino for some size down low..

Kiefer - holds the ball too much
RJ - can shoot a team out of a game
SJ - barely passes to bigs

Pick your poison hahaha.

We need another PG candidate. Ramos is our best player. But he isnt our long term solution to PG. It doesnt seem to be Kiefer either. Maybe Bollick. But we need another candidate for 2023.

Hoops Highlights broke down the offense:

He also noted that our bigs are more involved in the offense so as to increase their court awareness, instead of just being limited to the dunker's spot, or as exclusively stretch fours.

Furthermore, he said that this team played and executed their plays with more conviction.

Yup. As I said earlier, what they are doing with Carl now on offense should be the template moving forward for our 6'7/6'8 guys. We cant outsize or out-athletic other countries but can we can develop the skillset of our tall guys.

Choi Jun-Yong is rank at least top 3 best player of their NT. He plays as their Draymond green and punishes all Gilas perimeter player. He was the major reason why we always fail against them with Chot.

An agile 6'7 player with great wingspan, a shutdown defender and a point forward who patrols the middle part of the perimeter. He is the DDO killer and was just absent for 2-3 yrs because of game-fixing issues.

Phil NT is too talented if given the right coach. If kai, balti, Edu, bolick and a shooter like Heading would be included, we will be too strong for them.

That korean NT is one of the most stacked team in recent years. They could win over NZ with that team.

I believe once CT,goes back to playing the 3 position,he can do a better and more physical defense on this guy, just like he did with Lee Hyun-Jung,once Gilas have their official real team with hopefully a healthy Edu then it will be a one heck of tall and talented team.Nenad will have alot of fun running this team and I hope they get better in defense, offense wise once they get hot,it burns.

We'll need more 6'7"-6'8" players who play like Carl on offense, Balti on defense, and even both. Versatility is the name of the game now. We should be taking advantage of it.

Even if they don't end up being true combo forwards, it helps to be versatile as a 4.

You know what I always find funny nowadays? In the 2010s we have strong guards but weak wings and bings. But now we have improved on the wings and bigs but we can't seem to find a real point guard to save our lives. We are traditionally strong at the 1 but now we can't even find a PG with both decent size internationally and who isn't a total ballhog. Either our PGs are good but too short or are decently-sized but are total ballhogs. Sometimes, both short and are ballhogs.

I still cannot forgive Kiefer for missing that game-winning (or game-tying) shot vs Angola in 2019.

Our PGs tend to go hero ball to the max even when they didn't have to.

Its like part of Philippine basketball culture, even fans always looked for a hero ball time.

I think guards have been the same difference was there were no other options for offense. Now with better forwards and bigs, the guards don’t need to be the main creators anymore but they play like they still are.

We could actually get Michael Philips or Lucero but then if they play as naturalized player, they will be forever classified as naturalised player when they could actually be classified as local players.

This is not necessarily true. It isn't automatic

Dwight Ramos seems to play very well if its Korea he's playing against. Also, he seems to play much better offense playing for Gilas than when he plays for his B-League team in Japan.

But the biggest revealation of corse in this Gilas vs. Korea 2 game tune up is Rhenz Abando. The kid just proves that he can carry over his excellent collegiate game in the much higher level.

Sokor men watching the game isnt happy with what is happening. Mukha naiiyak sa huli.haha My korean partner said that it is an embarrassment if they will lose this game. College boys against proven vets and their main Sokor NT.

One thing I learned from the Qualifiers is that the Koreans really hate being beaten by someone "lesser" than them. Totoo yan, you can see the comments for yourselves. Hence the televised NT friendlies. Hehehehe.

The brunt of TVN's coverage of KNT is also on the Heo bros. Understandable since they are a legend's kids who are now playing in the KNT. Besides that one YT channel that Heoball said got greetings from SJ and Dwight, 0 coverage sa atin. The Koreans don't know these are kids, or that SJ is coming to KOGAS, or any of that stuff.

Choi Jun Yong is also getting a lot of praise. Kasi maangas daw, like a Calvin. They like that he got into Gilas' heads (did he? I didn't notice). I'll just say, he's no Calvin hahaha. I'll just say that his player archetype, a Point Forward whose offense is just camping at the perimeter, is Japeth's food on defense (who I'm confident will suit up for Gilas at least 1 last time for WC).

Baltazar is more of a shooting threat than Quiambao, he might be the only person missing into turning both games into Ws we dont even need Kouame or Kai to beat this Korean team imo. The composure and energy that the team plays with under Nenad is something else, very different from a Reyes handled team. It’s very unlikely for this same team to perform this relatively well under Chotty or any of his kins biological and political.

Now imagine what would be this team would look like with Kai, Kouame, Baltazar, AJ Edu & Thirdy in tow. Basta huwag lang si Choke Reyes ang coach.

Perhaps the koreans upon learning that we were missing a number of our key players while they were playing almost full force, were expecting that they are going to blow Gilas by an average of 17+ points each game.

Looking at the box scores. Everyone scored in both games. This Nenad team had 54 assist in two games which is very impressive. This Gilas team made more 3s than South Korea on both games. This Nenad Gilas team made more 3s in two games than Gilas Chot's entire SEA games tournament.

Why is that if Gilas is handled by a foreign coach, we usually shoot respectably from 3-pt range (even during coach Rajko Toroman's time)? Yet if its Choke Reyes handling the team, we struggle big time from 3-pt range.

Korean basketball observer @Heoball said this is as close to a full-strength Korean team. 6'8 Lee Hyun-jung of course is prepping for the NBA Draft, but may need to surgery on his ankle, tough luck. And maybe 1 more, to replace one of their shooting guards.

Point of interest is the Point Guard position, because they thought , last year their starting point guard (and future SJ teammate at Daegu) was totally outplayed by SJ. and they need replace him with one of Hur Jae's sons, the one sporting #2. Hur's other son also plays in the NT, sporting #3.

To those old enough, Hur Jae is considered as the Korean GOAT, and was constantly beating PHL since the days of Caidic ( 1986 AG, Semis ) and Patrimonio ( 1994 AG )

I’ve been reading the Korean NT drama for quite sometime now. They’re somewhat in disarray as to the formation of the team prior to their disqualification from the previous WC window. They have issues with the coaching appointment, player selections and team preparations. Apparently they are not popular to many Koreans.

And Ricardo Ratliffe has obviously lost a couple of steps and is not the same explosive player as before. They needed this exhibition game in their home country to somewhat rejuvenate their basketball program from the nagging issues they faced in the last few months.
