Philippines Senior National Team Thread Vol. V

Honestly, might be better for the short and long term for Nenad to be the coach since he can start ASAP and would have undivided attention on Gilas. Tab could be the consultant. Chot as the lead recruiter (assuming he would still want to be involved).

Hope Tab or Nenad gets the job. However, it shouldn't stop there. There should be a long-term plan. I laid down an outline:

1. Implement Tab's play style on offense and defense from the youth level, so no matter the personnel, there would be no confusion as to execution. Hopefully it sticks, and we become known as at least a good defensive team.

2. Have Tab and Nenad teach other coaches like Goldwin, Ayo, or coach Charles, so that they can refine their tactics for FIBA ball. Get as many young coaches as you can (young because they're more receptive to new ideas), so that we can have a good pool, even after Tab is gone.

3. Another point of emphasis should be individual development of players for FIBA, and good enough for Australia, even other overseas leagues. Good talent, and proper position relative to size, like having players the size of Navarro, Oftana, and Javi as wings, and other 6'7"-6'8" guys with Balti's versatility on defense, or at the very least ability to play the 4. Also, we need to develop versatile defenders from players from the 6'5"-6'7" range, so as to help the defense.

Very much agree bro, and well said.

The big key here is establishing the right culture for Phi basketball that starts right there in the grassroots level. We need to bring Phi basketball in line or relevant with the trend of world basketball. We need to cope up with the world trend. Pinoy coaches won't bring us there that is why we need a foreign coach like Tab or Nenad to do the job.

I say having the right materials (players with the right skill sets & qualities) & very good coaching (yung system that is proving to be working) are the keys.

I just have a strong feeling lang talaga that Chot is on his way out. The clamor for his ouster as Gilas coach is just too strong.

he is too unpopular now. if he is already unpopular when he replaced tab early this year, he is more unpopular now that his team lost to Indonesia in the recently-concluded SEA Games.

eventually, insisting chot as a head coach in next year's world cup can be more damaging to Gilas and SBP. the ticket sales for every Gilas games might be lower than expected since the fans have no confidence to the team.

I was searching for good news ( Chot). but instead, a very disturbing news "greeted" me. As a dad to a elementary-age son, i feel for those parents that lost their kids senselessly this afternoon. This is so upsetting.

Gun-related violence in US schools is a pervasive issue and has greatly increased in recent years arguably because of the significant increase in the rate of mental issues and suicide-related outcomes among adolescents. words can't describe how sorry i am for the parents.

"Read a message asking if I thought CTB would be able to coach Gilas in the coming Asia Cup. I said that objectively and technically, it was not possible.

Here's why:

- CTB is abroad and won't be coming back to MNL for at least several more days (maybe even a couple more weeks).

- UAAP S85 is set to begin around September, which means teams like ADMU will likely begin training by July (at the latest).

- In all likelihood, ADMU, which will be very hungry to redeem itself after losing to UP in S84, will begin training even earlier... maybe in June... maybe even before CTB returns.

- What all this means is that CTB, his coaching staff, and his players (a good number of whom made up the Gilas Cadets before) simply won't be available.

- It's just not realistic and practical to call for any major coaching change right now unless heaven & earth are moved, and our entire basketball calendar and structure in the country are revamped, which obviously isn't going to happen.

- Now, if the UAAP calendar (and the calendar of other leagues) were better synced with the international calendar, maybe a way can be found.

- But that just isn't the case. Our systems and structures in Philippine basketball just aren't built that way.

- Will things ever change? I dunno. I've been hoping for that change for much of the past decade.

- I think the last possible catalyst is hosting the FIBAWC next year. I'm pretty sure our structures, systems, and calendars will revolve around the FIBAWC, but the bigger question is what happens after 2023?

- Do we revert to pre-FIBAWC structures, systems, and calendars, or do we emerge with structures, systems, and calendars more aligned with international norms & standards?"

- From Enzo Flojo in AJEF Group.

Tough. Schedules of leagues in the Philippines should really be adjusted into a fiba friendly sched.

As he said, in 2023 WC, high chance local leagues will adjust or even give way for hosting of WC 2023. Yun na lang pagasa natin. Lol

IMO, Enzo Flojo and Karlo Lovenia are pro-CHOT (coz of ADMU connection) and it's up to SBP if they still want to messed up the FIBA Asia cup.

This is very true. Media people are wary of saying these things about Chot in view of his influence with MVP. But truthfully his record speaks more of resilience and failure and ability to spin the story than real success.

9th place 2007 FIBA ASIA Championships

2nd place 2013 FIBA Championships (Lost to Iran)

2014 World Championships failed to get past eliminations 1-4 record

7th place 2014 Asian Games - Shooting in your own basket - Chot's Genius

2018 BASKET BRAWL with Australia - Suspended by FIBA Chot was heard saying hit or hurt the opponent 89-53 score in our own stadium

2nd place 2022 SEA GAMES Lost the gold after 33 years Chot made a crucial error not knowing that you can field fil foreign players and lost to a reinforced Indonesia squad

If this was your record in the corporate world , I cannot imagine how you can get reinstated 3 times by the same employer. It is simply amazing!.

Iba din. If it was some other coach he would have resigned out of delicadeza or would have refused to take the job again.

Or those two doesn't want letting go of Tab in Ateneo because they are winning with him.. Why Tab can't leave Ateneo to coach Gilas? Dapat kalampagin din Ateneo for being selfish.. Is UAAP very important over national achievement? Buti nalang coach Pat of our women's team decide to leave NU head coaching to being now a full time head coach of Gilas womens team.. Tab is too good for UAAP.. Many coaches can replace him in Ateneo head coaching post...
no idea with BE but someone from SBP has to talk to them about CTB if thats what they\we want to happen. you cant expect BE management to knock on SBP's door and tell them "here take CTB", tapos thats not what SBP want to do. first things first, what is SBP's plan, then they start talking to other stakeholders. malay natin, they want all PBA and a PBA backed coach. if thats the case, why would BE be proactive in letting CTB go?

This is what bothers me. We could have continued the direction that Tab set instead of hiring Chot. Could have promoted Nenad after Tab's resignation.

We had Go, Rangel, Tungcab, the Nieto twins, Bulanadi, Suerte, Navarro, and even Ange in the Gilas pool. So that's 9 players. Unfortunately, Go, Bulanadi, Suerte, and the Nieto twins were released after Tab resigned.

Then we had Dwight, Thirdy, Kiefer, Kobe, Cariño, and Javi in the B.League, we could call them up as well (especially given that Dwight and Thirdy were called up only after Tab resigned). Juan, Lopez, and Bolick were free agents.

We already had some manpower for the FIBA window, and possibly the SEA Games. So why resort to PBA players as a new direction?

that direction is not new. that's what Coach Ron Jacob did for NCC, same direction with Coach Toroman with Gilas 1, and now with Coach Baldwin. we keep not learning from history.

SBP being the bitch of the PBA is using Gilas as leverage for those who don't want to play in the PBA like Slaughter and Bolick.

SBP HAS SPOKEN

http://sbp.ph/articles/sbp-presiden...l-statement-on-southeast-asian-games-campaign

We at the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas share the disappointment of our Filipino basketball fans and take full responsibility with the results of our 31st Southeast Asian Games campaign. We apologize we fell short and were not able to give our teams better support that they needed to retain the Gold. There are no excuses and we’ve learned valuable lessons. We will bounce back and reclaim our spot to stay ahead.

I guess it is still the Chot Reyes Show?

This is it? Goodness graciousness. I hope to revert to the direction we were heading to when Tab was program director.

But, this looks like a motherhood statement.

In fairness to the SBP, nothing is final yet. Al also referred to their overall performances, including 3x3, not just the men's 5x5. We really need a proper press conference to clear things out.

We cannot do anything about it even millions of fans. I rest my case. Let us get back to our lives and love ones.

If Bolick didnt want to play in the PBA he wouldve not signed that contract. Greg, Im not sure if he even has offers abroad. Didnt the spin editor in chief doubt that Greg had any offers.
