Philippines Senior National Team Thread Vol. V

  • Thread starter Thread starter IPC2

Speaking of Panlilio & Tab Baldwin, was it a case of Tab telling everybody in the SBP, "I can go to war with the current college players & B-league players of Gilas & without any PBA player", but Panlilio countered, "No, we will need some PBA players in the Gilas roster"? Then because of the disagreement, coach Tab decided to leave Gilas. Do you think bros ganoon yung nangyari?

I think everyone here feels that coach Tab really didn't like the idea that so many PBA players will be included in the Gilas pool since these PBA players won't be available most of the time becoz of conflict of schedule & they will just disrupt the chemistry of the team/pool.

Here's from the WC thread, right after the February window:

This is what I heard from someone who's active in our alumni sports affairs. Tab just came back from the US to attend his brother's wake. One day, he and MVP had a meeting to discuss, among other things, Gilas's preparation for the World Cup Qualifiers. Tab, probably still exhausted from what he went through both personally and professionally, told MVP he'd rather sit this one out and just coach Ateneo. He reasoned that the Philippines, being one of the major hosts of the 2023 WC, had already qualified anyway. MVP accepted his reasoning and all was well between them. However, sometime later, when MVP casually mentioned this to some officials of the SBP (who I won't name but it's easy to guess who they are anyway), they went ballistic. These people questioned Tab's commitment to the Gilas Program and everything went downhill after that. Harsh words were probably exchanged and feelings were hurt and in the end Tab got the boot even though he and MVP already had a gentleman's understanding on the matter. Coach Chot, who had nothing to do with this, was made a last-minute replacement.

This is an example of something that was supposed to be nothing ending up becoming horrifyingly something else all because some people chose, rightfully so or not, to make a mountain out of a molehill.

Well, from the looks of it, Tab really wanted to leave for a while, if this is true. Pero lo and behold, SBP panics. They could have been more discerning in the coaching search after the panic subsided.

Or, were Pangilinan's fellow officials waiting to strike at the opportunity? Note, this is just a question I just thought about.

I don't think they were waiting for an opportunity to strike because they all know naman the caliber of Coach Tab. However, you have to understand that the SBP is under a new President because MVP had already retired. Maybe the new leader felt threatened that, under his leadership, Gilas wouldn't have a good showing in the Feb window. Maybe so, maybe not. In the end, bridges may have been burned but I'm hoping this can still be repaired.

Al Panlilio(new sbp president) and Ryan Gregorio(meralco’s sport director).. Not surprise at all.. Yung isa buddy buddy ni AlChua(kapangalan pa) tas yun isa Commentator sa PBA, oh well

I think it was a case of Tab wanting the team to have adequate practice and refusing the job once he couldn't get it.

Yes in favour of kobe, navarro, thirdy..

Unbelievable. SBP right now is really run by nepotism. I still can't believe we had DDO Jr in our youth when we could have had Gold or Ayo. Does Josh Reyes even have any experience outside of anything connected to DDO sr? Really frustrating.

That was his first red flag for me. This is a man who would put his personal interests first before his country's

If we bring back tab, panlilio's vision and tab's vision must sync together.. problem is panlilio is too PBA reliant that he didnt trust the tab's vision and program..

Is it the same old but true story of the PBA wanting a significant role with Gilas but will not release all the requested players and will not provide adequate preparation time?

Yup.
PBA is like a bachelor wanting to get the prettiest girl out there but isn't willing to exert any effort to win that girl's heart becoz it is so confident that "mere appearance" nya lang would cause the girl to fall in love with him. How can that be when PBA's face value is that of below average man while his rivals have the animalistic sex appeal of a Brad Pitt & the wits of a Robert Downy Jr., plus such guys are willing to exert every effort to win the girl?

Ang PBA, pangit na nga, tamad pa!!! Ang mga karibal, gwapo na, matalino pa, masipag pa!!!!!

We will ask Coach Nenad Vucinic who is Serbian-Kiwi. Serbia is highly ranked in 3x3 basketball. Coach Chot would learn a lot from him.

PBA is GGSS (Gwapong gwapo sa sarili, trans: full of one's self) hehhe

MVP and SMC are basically the same to me just that SMC is richer hence better. I dont expect the actual change required from them. I just dont like the other options too.

Ayun, we don't expect the actual change require from SMC. That's why I'd take my chances with Chooks, Converge, Uytengsu, etc. Better to have a new face than the same old shit that's been done. Chooks kasi, despite the fact that they're also oligarchs, also contributed to development, like in the 3x3 program. It's a plus that they also supported Kai's development, since he was 15.

If Chooks, then get the UP players (since they have UP connections), some B.League guys, any high-upside 18+ kids in UPIS, and from the other schools. They'll have to stay out of recruiting, though, as pirating is an issue. Perasol has to stay out of it and just recruit prospects that hadn't played for Gilas.

FIBA World Cup Qualifiers (3rd window)

️ June 27 - July 5, 2022
June 30 - Gilas Men vs New Zealand
July 3 - Gilas Men vs India

Ok, next in line before Fiba Asia Cup. Hopefully di naman tayo matalo sa India. Lol.
But anyway, I hope our Collegiate + B league Players will do better.

Kai is 50-50. This is literally 1 week after Draft.

AJ, I think still recovering.

Maybe we can try Dalph Panopio.
