Speaking of Panlilio & Tab Baldwin, was it a case of Tab telling everybody in the SBP, "I can go to war with the current college players & B-league players of Gilas & without any PBA player", but Panlilio countered, "No, we will need some PBA players in the Gilas roster"? Then because of the disagreement, coach Tab decided to leave Gilas. Do you think bros ganoon yung nangyari?
I think everyone here feels that coach Tab really didn't like the idea that so many PBA players will be included in the Gilas pool since these PBA players won't be available most of the time becoz of conflict of schedule & they will just disrupt the chemistry of the team/pool.
Here's from the WC thread, right after the February window:
This is what I heard from someone who's active in our alumni sports affairs. Tab just came back from the US to attend his brother's wake. One day, he and MVP had a meeting to discuss, among other things, Gilas's preparation for the World Cup Qualifiers. Tab, probably still exhausted from what he went through both personally and professionally, told MVP he'd rather sit this one out and just coach Ateneo. He reasoned that the Philippines, being one of the major hosts of the 2023 WC, had already qualified anyway. MVP accepted his reasoning and all was well between them. However, sometime later, when MVP casually mentioned this to some officials of the SBP (who I won't name but it's easy to guess who they are anyway), they went ballistic. These people questioned Tab's commitment to the Gilas Program and everything went downhill after that. Harsh words were probably exchanged and feelings were hurt and in the end Tab got the boot even though he and MVP already had a gentleman's understanding on the matter. Coach Chot, who had nothing to do with this, was made a last-minute replacement.
This is an example of something that was supposed to be nothing ending up becoming horrifyingly something else all because some people chose, rightfully so or not, to make a mountain out of a molehill.
Well, from the looks of it, Tab really wanted to leave for a while, if this is true. Pero lo and behold, SBP panics. They could have been more discerning in the coaching search after the panic subsided.
Or, were Pangilinan's fellow officials waiting to strike at the opportunity? Note, this is just a question I just thought about.
I don't think they were waiting for an opportunity to strike because they all know naman the caliber of Coach Tab. However, you have to understand that the SBP is under a new President because MVP had already retired. Maybe the new leader felt threatened that, under his leadership, Gilas wouldn't have a good showing in the Feb window. Maybe so, maybe not. In the end, bridges may have been burned but I'm hoping this can still be repaired.
Al Panlilio(new sbp president) and Ryan Gregorio(meralco’s sport director).. Not surprise at all.. Yung isa buddy buddy ni AlChua(kapangalan pa) tas yun isa Commentator sa PBA, oh well
