Philippines Senior National Team Thread Vol. V

Did Tab’s Gilas try it a little against Sokor? I think it works for UP because they have length and athleticism which Tab’s Gilas also had. Tabs Ateneo with the loss of guys like Thirdy, Navarro even Nieto and Go lost what it had defensively.

No, I don't think Tab's Gilas tried it as much. Just straight up defense and good rotations.

I think they pressed Indo or Thailand. But I guess Tab respected Sokor too much to do that. Game plan was to tire out Ratlifee in the 4th and yes rely on good defensive and offensive execution and it worked.

They didnt press the Abdullah cup teams IRC. The better teams had taller longer guards. Dwight and Thirdy were largely stopped. Only Dave looked decent. And Suerte in mostly garbage time.

Honestly speaking though, these were the teams that Kai would have made a big difference. With Kai there, Kouame and him could have taken turns attacking Al Dwairi. Tire him out in the 4th.

Now, We will go back to DDO.

Last Window of Fiba WCQ, and this SEA GAMES. Very short prep.

But hopefully we will have longer prep in suceeding tourneys.

If given, I hope Coach Chot will have some twist on his DDO like in 2014. Or bettter.

I only see Spain pnr as an added variation so far e.

Chot Reyes names Justin Arana, Gian Mamuyac, Shaun Ildefonso and Javi Gomez De Liano to the Gilas pool.

Nice. Justin Arana!!! From AU!!!

Only Arana and Javi I think can be useful in Fiba. Others arw just maybe there for oractices

I think Mamu could have some use as a 3-and-D combo guard. Need a playmaker next to him, though, unless he can develop that skill.

As for Javi, hope he can get called up some, even for depth at the wing.

Arana, good selection. Sayang, he could have developed into a poor man's Baltazar under Tab. But good that he's part of the pool.

For the next Fiba games only the 4 Gilas cadets will represent the PBA. Good thing is the college players and B leaguers should be available. Here is my 12.

1. Kouame - C
2. Chiu - C
3. Balti - PF/SF
4. Carl - PF
5. SF - Navarro
6. SF - Javi
7. SG - Dwight
8. SG- Thirdy
9. SG - Dave
10. SG - Spencer
11. PG - Kiefer
12. PG - Belangel

Alternates
13. Arana
14. Abarrientos

Good news is, all these guys are available by the time of the Asia Cup. UAAP season and B.League season ends before the WC too. These guys should be called up.

And, we're fucked. Since a lot of our best players for FIBA come from OUTSIDE the PBA.

Talent Wise + Fiba Wise. Half of our Best Players are overseas or college.

1. JC or Ange or Harper (NP)

2. Kai (Australia)

3. Thirdy ( Japan)

4. Kiefer ( Japan)

5.Parks (Japan)

6. Baltazar ( Japan)

7. Tamayo (Uaap)

8. Heading ( Taiwan)

9. Tuffin (NZ)

10. AJ ( USA)

If it's 3 months prep like Chot promised then hopefully teams allow players not to practice like Kouame for Ateneo.

Hopefully by the time the WC comes around, players like Carl, Dave, Belangel, Abarrientos are either playing abroad or in the Gilas pool.

I think Kouame's out of Ateneo by the time the WC comes around.

Dave's next season is his last. So no problem on his side. Belangel and RJ are replaceble unless they improve greatly.

Probably remove Javi as well unless he does good for the cadets next window since he is probably gonna be taking DNPs from Tim Cone.

We need bodies at the wing. There's the danger of 3-guard lineups. But, that's why Spencer and Dwight could be welcome sights, since both are 6'4", and are strong, and play defense. Might be able to defend the 3.

honestly, i'm not too high on arana. he seems like a pure 5. bullstrong and decent height for the pba. however, i'm not sure how he fits in Gilas unless he develops into a pop threat. otherwise, he's not that fast and doesn't jump that high so he's going to be a tweener in the international game.

in the pba tho, i think he can be a decent role player.

ambohot, on the other hand, i think can be an athletic type of 4 for gilas. not to skilled but he's as tall as arana, but more agile and has a decent stroke from outside. he just needs to bulk up a tad bit.

Yes Arana seems to be a typical internationally undersized big. Decent in the PBA but not much in the Asian level. I guess we need bigs when PBA is ongoing. I don't know why no Ambohot. Take note that Tab coached against Balti for many years so had a first hand basis to judge that he had the potential to be a big SF for Gilas. Also, Chot does not have a similar training program.

Just hope Arana can develop into a serviceable big who can play some 4. And I do worry that Chot does not have a similar program as Tab, to train Arana as a FIBA 4, like Balti and Tamayo.

Maybe a taller, but slower Pingris?

I don’t have a problem with a 3 guard lineup. It’s honestly common now in today’s game, including the NBA.

My problem is with the 3 small guard lineup.

The problem is the small guards usually are undersized to play the 3. A 3-guard lineup would be nice if the third guard is Dwight, Parks, James Spencer, or anyone else 6'4" and above. Strength and/or length would be nice too.

Point Guard: SJ Belangel closes the game for Ateneo and is steady. RJ Abarrientos shoots and makes a lot of 3-pointers and free throws. Kiefer Ravena from his SEA Games showing is shaky considering the competition. Dwight Ramos has shown he can play the point.
SG: Thirdy Ravena is more of scorer and he has strength to match-up. Dave Ildefonso is bigger than Thirdy, can score and defend, definitely has speed. Dwight can also play this position with SJ or RJ.
SF: Kobe Paras can hit 3-pointers but he has to lift weights, i don't see cuts in his muscles yet like any athlete. Like Dave has big cut biceps who can swing at SF. Zavier Lucero can play forward positions and can get really hot. Jordi Gomez de Liano is a raw talent, tall shooter and has handles.
PF: Justine Baltazar and Carl Tamayo can play frontcourt positions. Balty with his length and Tamayo with his bulk. Michael Phillips is pure adrenaline, makes putbacks and chases loose balls.
Center: Ange Kouame has dipped his game this UAAP from what i saw when he was with Coach Baldwin. They must take care of his diet. It's ideal if Kai Sotto plays, our team gets better. I'm not yet familiar on other names aside from UAAP so i'll check.
