Philippines Senior National Team Thread Vol. V

No, I don't like the Worlds Japeth. In Asia he has good performances. He can be relied upon against Asian teams but the Worlds seem to shut down the brain of Japeth.

Even against Asian teams he's very inconsistent. He'll either have a very good game or he'll play like @ss. Which why we need better tall players so we can bench him if he's nagkakalat

I understand getting Kiefer because he needs to integrate with the system of Chot, since he will also the lead guard for big tournaments like FIBA Asia and Asian Games, But Montalbo? I'm TNT fan but it's obvious Chot using this Gilas to develop his players at TNT.... But anyway, This is SEAG only... Pagbigyan nalang muna... But putting him in final 12 at FIBA Asia and Asian Games? That's very obvious that he's using this opportunity to develop his players...

Agree. This is just for the SEA Games so I don't really mind Chot preferring to get Montalbo over what most of us think are better PBA point guards than Montalbo.

Of course things wud be different when we wud be talking about the Gilas roster for the 2022 FIBA Asia Cup & the window qualifiers for the 2023 FIBA World Cup.

I hope & think Robert Bolick wud be available for the Asia Cup.

Correct bro.
With Japeth, its either a hit or miss. He just can't be consistent. One game he'll do well, the next game he'll suck big time.

Also, Japeth doesn't bring with him experience despite being a national team veteran of almost a decade & a half already. Its like Japeth's savvy (or the lack of it) & understanding of FIBA game had hardly improved all these years.

which is a shame because he's one of the few pinoy players who have the physical tools to match up well against the world's top players

Physical tools, yes Japeth have them. But Japeth simply lacks the brains, poise & the guts to hold his own in the world level.
Notice those easy point blank shots that he missed in a particular game in the 2019 World Cup? Halatang intimidated sya. He easily gets intimidated. This doesnt speak well for a national team veteran of more than a decade. Parang he hasn't gotten used to the pressure of playing the FIBA game.

i hope sbp are thinking ways that will allow michael philips and zavier lucero play for Gilas as locals. sayang length, motor and athleticism of these kids.

They also put that to good use and exert effort on defense and on the boards. Hope SBP is considering exemptions for them.

My Dream 15 Man Eligible Lineup so far for 2023.

PG: Kiefer, Bolick

SG: JC (NP) , Perez, Thirdy, Heading

SF: Oftana, Dwight, Parks ,(Caelum or Lopez)

PF: Tamayo, Baltazar

C: Kai, AJ, Ange (If exempted, if not Maybe JMF)

Very unlikely though. Since Coach Chot will get some help from pba

Now, Baltazar will be in B league. So, the composition of our Gilas prospects is:

Nba - JC

Nba/Nba G league/NBL - Kai Sotto

US NCAA - AJ Edu, Dalph Panopio

B LEAGUE - Dwight, Kiefer, Thirdy, Parks, Paras, Baltazar

TAIWAN LEAGUE - Heading

NBL NZ - Tuffin

UAAP/NCAA - Kouame, Tamayo, Dave Ildefonso

PBA: Bolick, Perez, Oftana, Japeth, Junmar, Troy, Wright, Pogoy, Alas, Thompson

YOUTH: Caelum Harris, Lebron Lopez

Looks Balance. I will probably only choose 4 pba players though for 2023 Consideration.

Lopez is already pro. That OTE experience would’ve been improved his game. Tsk.

Sir Dave if the plan is to include Michael in that so-called exemption thing I think we might as well include Kai Ballugay in that package but on for the long term putting Xavier L and Chris K in the pipeline hopefully after 5 years and lastly Maik D as part of our naturalized roster then those kids from our Batang Gilas roster plus were hoping for some potentials in the coming NBTC Global Games then voila!! We could have deeper roster of players for the years to come.

There is an application fee for each player , not a whole sale thing, the other thing that drives this is immediate need, approval for a competition pushes decision forward. example.. 3rd window if Phillips name is on roster together with Ange, it forces FIBA to make a decision and if he passes. it's basically touch move. one cleared as a local , forever cleared..
basically i'm saying pick your battles that you can realistically win. Philips is doable to me effort and focus is put into it. ( this isn't a wishful type of thing , where you ask FIBA pueda ba the following , and then you give a wholesale list of players ..

Michael and Koon are the most realistic options at the moment. They got their passports the closest after reaching 16.

Suntok sa buwan si Lucero, e.

Is Koon worthy enough of that fee?

No disrespect, But I think we have quality players as good as him in his position???

I maybe wrong though, I didnt see much of him

Koon? He's a 6'5 natural PG so yes

Oh the famous "6'5 PG" archetype.

Well, IPC is right that Phillips and Koon are the ones who have highest chance because they go theur passports just a few months late.

Let's see.

He needs to fight for his spot though. Being a 6'5 PG is an advantage. But doesn't neccesarily mean better than our Gilas Quality smaller guards.

But I hope he will pan out if ever exempted

I dont think he'll play much PG with Belangel still with Ateneo.

For Ateneo No but for Gilas he can play the PG slot all he wants (above average handles, decent shooting, really quick on his feet and a smart baller as well)

Yeah hopefully he'll have more playing time next season. But for Gilas would be nice to have a 6'5 guard harassing the primary ballhandler of the opponent w/o sacrificing foot speed. I didnt realized earlier that he actually has more potential to be a lead/point guard than Dwight until i saw him play, he's alot quicker than i thought he would be.
And for me his playmaking should be secondary since we would want to rely on effective execution (Tab's system hopefully) its on the defensive end that his value would be more obvious, like switching defensively our PG wouldnt be on such a disadvantage (as with Belangel or Abarrientos) with that kind of quality in size (&quickness)

Call me crazy, but I think UP's blitzing defense can be an effective counter to a DDO, especially on guards who aren't composed and aren't willing passers.

I'm wondering, can UP's blitzing defense be effective against teams like SoKor and maybe the MENA teams?

What’s MENA, middle eastern teams? If yes, I can see such defense creating turnovers and disrupting offensive schemes. Not as optimistic though against SoKor who’s got quickness and are known to move the ball around really well.

Did Tab’s Gilas try it a little against Sokor? I think it works for UP because they have length and athleticism which Tab’s Gilas also had. Tabs Ateneo with the loss of guys like Thirdy, Navarro even Nieto and Go lost what it had defensively.

MENA's Middle East and North Africa, so yeah, Middle Eastern teams are part of that.
