Philippines Senior National Team Thread Vol. V

As if FIBA isnt a political institution. Our officials are just play the same game and I think they are in the right when it comes to eligibility rules.

Of course, and the populous view among FIBA federations is really the U16 rule , that's the accurate situation and efforts to get realistic results should be geared with this in mind. this isn't an ideology debate.

Angelino Mark 7 years ago and, he was 7. So, he's around 14-15 now. Chot is really doing his homework.

I won't say i don't like Chot as a coach, but I'd admit Tab is the better tactician. When it comes to organising and recruitment, Chot does a lot better tho. We might have successfully recruited Sage Tolentino if it was Chot and not Baldwin who approached the family. Baldwin didn't do a good job as the program director too, leaving the batang gilas program to arespacochaga's hands. But why does one has to go when one is in and vice versa? I think Chot should've been the program director while Baldwin is the coach.

This made me think about the Perasol situation in UP. Chot might have been a good recruiter, while Tab would have continued with his tactics and defense, and putting players into positions where they would fare better internationally, height-wise. Well, except for maybe Mike Nieto?

Well what you are proposing is a rather conservative piecemeal approach and to not ruffle the feathers too much with a radical approach in behalf of our kababayans. Id strongly disagree but we've been there before. Id just like to point out, yeah, this is ideological.

Mike Nieto was Chot's RR Pogoy, well, anyway, yep, should've been Chot as program director and Tab as head coach for the seniors but should also be active with Batang Gilas. You know, it was shocking to find out that Tab didn't even know about Tamayo who played for batang gilas twice whilr he was program director

He knew about Tamayo but he thought he was just 6’5” - 6’6” which is also surprising.

So guys like Michael Philips, Koon, and to an extent Ange and Malonzo are more practical choices for exceptions than guys like Mikey and Clarkson if 18 is the threshold for exception.

Hopefully we successfully get exemptions for Michael, Koon, Ange, Malonzo, and maybe Lucero.

But how much of a chance do these guys have?

Malonzo is one and done ? Malabo.

It's still exception to the U16 rule, so establishing residency and passport close to 16 matters.
And give it at least 4 years residency and domestic basketball heritage

Refer to the reasons given by sec gen for Greg.. e.g we note.when you got your passport and moved to the Philippines, and how long you've been a resident playing in country (all consistent with guidelines

Without explicitly saying it. If at 18 as a freshman you got your passport and started living and playing in the Philippines for the next 5 years . Your chances are good for an exception

It's point less if one's not even a Gilas pool.member like Newman. As the SBP has to file your application, and why would they even do that for none pool members.

If somehow remy martin made the gials lineup his role will be the same as what he is doing in kansas..

Martin would be a Jason Castro upgrade, a player who is used to playing with giants. Castro is bothered by height.

Up to what extent did he know about Tamayo? If you thought he was 6-5 to 6'6, then I'm certain you haven't met him before nor have you seen any of his games. But, you were the program director, your Ateneo assistant was the head coach. Only means he didn't bother to see Batang Gilas at practice even once, didn't bother to look at the lineup even on paper, didn't bother to watch ANY of the Batang Gilas games even once, even a replay. To think that the he was director to a program that's starting fresh, his cadets program was essentially also the senior program, and he didn't bother at all with Batang Gilas which is supposed to be your grassroots program? He's a great coach but, frankly, he sucked as a program director. Hence, Chot should've been asked instead to head the program while tab keeps his job as head coach

I don't understand what you are saying. Tamayo played in Batang Gilas but he was often injured so his potential was not up there as with Kai or AJ. So as program director he has to check on Tamayo's height personally? Oh, he's 6'8 now he can be a hybrid SF/PF internationally? He coached against against Balti in the UAAP he knows the guys potential. So no surprise he made him priority no. 1 for the pool. But he gave the opportunity for Tamayo and when he saw himself that given the height the guy had potential he took him. What's the problem?

With Gabe Norwood no longer in the pool, who is our default Team Captain?

Dwight or Thirdy?

You mean for Sea Games?

I dont Know? Maybe Pogoy? HAHAHHAHAHAHA.

Kidding aside, I don't think it is much of a matter in this sea games which we have 99% chance of winning.
But probably Dwight should be.

For Fiba Asia Cup though, I hope we get our best players. Including Kai and maybe AJ.

Not 99% now that Indonesia will send a full-strength team full of naturalized players that they somehow managed to insert in their roster with FIBA's help.

It makes much more sense to me that we just send our younger Gilas prospects like Francis Lopez, Caellum Harris & reinforced by a few PBA & B-league players in the SEA Games than a PBA-select plus B-league players national team. I mean what's the point of sending the strongest possible Gilas team in a basketball competition like the SEA Games where we're up against patsy opponents? Is there something really worth bragging about winning the SEA games basketball gold medal? Indonesia & Thailand, which are our strongest opponents in the SEA Games are still laughing stock in Asian basketball. Didn't Indonesia, with Lester Prosper & Jawato, just got massacred by Saudi Arabia & Lebanon recently?

My take is, we send a team with a number of young & developmental players reinforced with PBA & B-league players. While we want to win the SEA Games basketball gold, it should not be done at all cost. We must also put emphasis on development.

Takot baka matalo, i mean even in the Feb window it was senseless to send PBA players in basically no bearing games, i had to explain to a team, why Lebron Lopez was not used.. essentially they did not want to lose ( bata pa) , pero talo naman with pros lol.. it's really silly mentality

They simply don’t want to let go of the title king of sea even if it’s meaningless.

That's Chot Reyes mentality.

Francis Lopez should have been in the roster in that 1st game vs. India.

Well, we can also blame the UAAP season being on Feb, and the players were in training bubbles. UAAP ends BEFORE the SEA Games. Why not call THEM up? Only need a few weeks anyways.

But how come we were able to call up Ange? Dwight, Juan, and Thirdy as well.

As what DAdmiral said, "Takot baka matlo".

SBP people & most of our basketball stakeholders are obviously more confident that a PBA-select Gilas team will do the job in SEA Games. See how they were so confident in the 2019 SEA Games with that PBA-select Gilas team. And see how triumphant they were when Gilas won the gold medal.
