Philippines Senior National Team Thread Vol. V

  • Thread starter Thread starter IPC2
  • Start date Start date
To me this is our serious legit national team pool (frontline players)

NP Kouame and Harper Jr (if lucky get an exception)

Center Kai and AJ

4. Philipps , Ballungay, Baltazar, Tamayo

3 . Dwight, Oftana, Koon, Dave ,

Dwight and Dave are undersized for a 3 much better if they play the 2. I'll add Kobe Paras in there...

If there is two positions that are most interchangeable to me it's the 2 and 3. Reason it's called the wings ..
The Philippines needs to move away from using under 6'2 players at SG cause they have to switch.often to SF and using slow 4 bigs , cause they have to switch often to the perimeter

Dave and Dwight are still very versatile 2/3 wings that we have the others are either too small or too slow

I think Ken Tuffin and BRP would be the most versatile players at the 2-3 I would like to see those 2 suit up for Gilas.

I dont think we are only limited to Dave and Dwight in terms of SG/SF. There are some other candidates like:

Calvin Oftana - Very Good Sized SF. And He plays SF in Pba.

CJ Perez - Best Local Performer for Gilas last 2019 WC

Rayray Parks - Literally the only reason why we are not listing him is because he have a burned relationship with MVP and Coach Chot. Basketball Wise though, he is a perfect SG/SF.

Ken Tufin - A NZ. You know him better.

Thirdy - Not really high on him. But he is producing and playing well for gilas whenever he plays.

Kobe Paras - Still an Athletic 6'6 SF. Needs more maturity though.

Ofc, Players like Baltazar, Quiambao, and Tamayo. I consider them as combo forwards. But ofc, they will be able to play some spot SF minutes.

Honestly, I think non-PBA are the best options at the 3-4-5 positions, generally. It's the guards where the PBA has an argument.

Center - You need someone to backup Kai, AJ, and (Ange if he will be the NP) by another big. Pba Bigs like JMF or Japeth will probably be the best reliever.

PF: Baltazar and Tamayo sana. But Coach Chot will probably choose Troy over Tamayo. Lol.

SF: Oftana has a Case. Others are Non - Pba. Coach Chot may consider Pogoy and Wright as SF though lol.

PG/SG - Kiefer, Bolick, Perez should be locks. Maybe just add a jordan heading for shooting. Or ofc, JC (if he will be the NP)

I just noticed that a lot of our Fil Foreigner prospects are missing the passport deadline barely. like half a year or a year.

I think if it willl be changed to before 18, it can be chnaged

It's at 16 because of the principle behind the rule.

18 is for the exceptions. which is provided for.

The reason for 16 ( younger age) is to verify mutual intent of the player and the country to invest on a child before he is established good.

in the absence of a verified decision ( which is proven by passport) , then that intent needs to be verified by residency and basketball heritage. The principle behind the rules and exceptions are actually very logical and simple

although I am all for it if it happens, how many countries are against this rule over the number of FIBA members\participants? if its less than half, let SBP deal with it and fans not think about it. if not under our control or we cannot influence, then not worth thinking about it.

sorry, not saying you shouldnt think about. its a free world.

there are less than 5 that have vocally mentioned they are against the rule (want change) , and there are around 200 federations. Sorry to say , there is no such significant movement for cause for change.
There are however multiple players who are wanting to get exceptions and have been approved for exemption ( 50 plus players na) .. (but that's a different conversation and topic)

like I said, if it happens, im all for it. but purely as a fan, its a waste of time considering something that will most likely not happen anytime soon. it doesnt matter if I agree with the rule or not. its in place, i have no voice in FIBA in anyway to impact it, so just follow it until the environment change. there are good points being discussed by posters on who or how the national team can be composed. its very positive so its nice to read. nasisingit lng tlaga yun hagop ng madalas. it is what it is for now.

So guys like Michael Philips, Koon, and to an extent Ange and Malonzo are more practical choices for exceptions than guys like Mikey and Clarkson if 18 is the threshold for exception.

Absolutely, Let's not ignore the explicit information provided

1. SEC gen letter on reason why Greg was approved, - he expliicitly mentioned the time Greg moved to the Philippines as at teernager and when he got his passport as a teenager. (note it's an exception to getting a passprot before 16, so obviously it matters if you just got your passport 1 or 2 years after as compared to 10 years after , obvious logical naman yun)

2. It's explicitly mentioned in in the FIBA rule book for main reasons for exception .
A. # of years of residency B. # of years of basketball heritage in Local compeittion

It's foolish to ignore this clear information

kouame went to the Philippines at a younger age. he should be in the mix of things to be considered as a local.

It is a point in favor for Kouame, but note a point against Kouame is the age he got his passprot ( 22 yrs old yata) that's 6 years from 16 years old

under Philippine law, you cannot be naturalized less than 21year old at time of hearing. im pretty sure that can be argued that what prevented Kouame to get his passport is the law of the land and not negligence. its different from filfors who is not affected by this and still getting passport after their 16th bday.

What you mentioned was included in the exception case filed with FIBA for Kouame.
