Philippines Senior National Team Thread Vol. V

  • Thread starter Thread starter IPC2
  • Start date Start date
For the SEA games this will be my 30 man pool. I am assuming this is a training ground for 2023 and not a PR move. I am removing the UAAP guys, except for Kouame, as they cannot play. I am removing the international league guys, as I don't think B league will lend Thirdy and Dwight so soon. I am adding the TNT guys (except Kelly) as I assume Chot will still add them.

Gilas mainstays(4):
C: Kouame
SF: Navarro
PF: Rangel
SG: Tungcab

Former Gilas cades PBA(3):
PG: Nieto
SG: Suerte
C: Go

Unaffiliated(1):
SF: Lopez

PBA(22)
C: Greg, Japeth, June Mar
PF: Erram, Rike, Almazan, Adamos, Tratter
SF: Oftana, Mocon, Tolentino, Rosario
SG: Perez, Wright, Pogoy, Banal, Black, Trollano
PG: Bollick, Scottie, Quinto, Montalbo

But for me, if we will have a 30 man pool beyond the SEA games but for 2023 it will be this:

Gilas mainstays(2):
C: Kouame
SF: Navarro

International(5):
C: Kai
SF: Dwit, Thirdy
SG: Heading
PG: Kiefer

UAAP(3):
PF/SF: Baltazar, Tamayo
SF/SG: Dave

Former Gilas cades PBA(2):
PG: Nieto
C: Go

Unaffiliated(1):
SF: Lopez

PBA(19)
C: Greg, Japeth, June Mar
PF: Erram, Rike, Almazan, Adamos, Tratter
SF: Oftana, Mocon, Tolentino, Rosario
SG: Perez, Wright, Pogoy, Trollano
PG: Bollick, Scottie, Quinto

Crap, I forgot about Adamos. He has a decent outside shot, and can play and defend 4 and 5, and has some size at 6'7", especially at 4.

Marcial, Reyes meet, tackle Gilas schedule, players' pool for FIBA World Cup: https://www.pba.ph/news/marcial-reyes-meet-tackle-gilas-schedule-players-pool-for-fiba-world-cup

OK, the PBA is now coming to the rescue.

Please, from the PBA, I hope the RIGHT PLAYERS for every position will be called to the pool, whether for the FIBA Asia Cup or the WC, or even the windows. The only PBA players that I think are FIBA-fit are Japeth, June Mar, Oftana, Perez, Bolick, Marcio, and Romeo. Probably Arvin Tolentino as well.

Bro no disrespect, you're one of the solid posters here sa IBN, but what the hell is the infatuation with Arvin Tolentino? Everytime na may mock up line-up ka parating "probably Arvin Tolentino", "maybe Arvin Tolentino", "I think Arvin Tolentino should be included". Lol bro, the kid is a tweener, too small to play pf, too slow to guard SF's and the wings, and I'm never surprised kahit once di naconsider to, tamad pa to dumepensa, I just don't get your infatuation with this kid bro

Size at the wing, I guess, and shooting. That's my only answer.

I get your points, though. I'm a Ginebra fan, might explain my infatuation, but yes, I have seen his lack of motor and defense. Probably an avenue for improvement.

I’d much rather see Troy Rike as he is a better version of Isaac Go.

JUST IN: An expanded Gilas Pilipinas pool of 30 players including a bulk of pro standouts has been proposed for a loaded 2022 schedule after a meeting between coach Chot Reyes and PBA, Commissioner Willie Marcial told The STAR.

Obviously using Gilas to increase the popularity of PBA. Development and competitiveness be dammed.

Also reminds me of the saving face the PBA did by sending an all-star selection in SEAG after that disastrous 2019 FIBA WC.

The PBA management really thinks Filipinos are stupid and forgetful.

One thing that pisses me off is hindi magkasabay sabay yung mga generational talents natin per position:

During the time of Castro and Blatche, we lacked good 2 way wings, and parati pa wala si Lassiter noon, imagine if Thirdy and Dwight are in the line-ups of prime Blatche and Castro, sheesh.

I have high expectations with Bolick and Juan GDL, especially Bolick, I don't know maybe super taas kasi ng standard na iniwan ni Castro. Terrence was getting there kaso ang tagal ng inactive nito sa international scene. As for Kiefer who was supposed to be our lead guard, parati naman absent sa mga qualifiers, hindi niya tuloy masolidify yung PG position, come 2023 I think our best bet is still Kiefer and Terrence, since hindi na naman babaguhin ni Chot yung DDO, these 2 guys are the one's who excelled the most on his system at the point position

Oo nga, even with this frontcourt talent, hindi nagkasabay sa guards. Man, iba-iba per generation.

Kiefer actually played pretty well in the qualifiers for 2019 against Australia. Sayang lang, na-positive sa drugs. He could be a big help with our bigs, get them involved in PnR.

I actually said Terrence is still FIBA-fit. Sure, he's 30 this month, but he already has had a good track record. Inefficient, sige, but he can provide shooting and a spark off the bench.

CCR and X-man pool na naman. Kay CTB, when you say pool, it means players joining the regular practices and all are being developed. Kay CCR, pool is synonymous to a list. On paper lang yan. I'll bet anything those 30 players will NEVER be complete in any practice session.

Potential/Current Gilas Players (Non Pba Players)

DEVELOPED OVERSEAS

Older Ones:

Jordan Clarkson (In US)
AJ Edu (In UK/US)
Dwight Ramos (In US)
Jordan Heading (In US)
Ken Tuffin (In NZ)
Will Navarro (In Greece Right?)
Dalph Panopio ( In Italy)

Younger ones:

Caelum Harris
Jayden Harper( still hoping against hope)
Dylan Harper (Hoping against hope too)
Mason Amos
CJ Amos
Jordan Amos
Femi Edu
Tobi Edu
Ben Edu
Luke Tobias
Lowell Briones
Kyle Gamber
Ajani Jones
Braylon Williams

And I think I am forgetting some names. But yeah, there will be a lot of overseas developed Fil Foreign Eligible Players who will be part of Gilas pool in the near future. Imo.

PS: When I said developed. He learned and developed his game of organize basketball in that place. For ex. Ange is develop here in Philippines

If SBP had any foresight and needed to get an exception for an ineligible. They should focus on a player like Harper Jr who could represent us in 3 World cups up to 2031.

It's really short sighted to just put all your eggs in one basket and get an exception for Clarkson who can only play in August 2023 .
It's actually quite stupid...from a long term investment standpoint.
Which you think the SBP should be thinking off.

This is the systemic problem I'm talking about.
We continue to make the same mistakes. very short sighted

I mean I love JC to be considered local. But as NP, it is very much ok.

For Long Term Exception, Overseas Players like:

Ron Harper Jr, Remy Martin, Sage Tolentino will be good candidates.

PS:, Btw, I hope we can get Ron's brother Dylan

harsh but they are not wrong though

TR7 is not already that player that it use to be... He's not explosive as it was, mainly due to stack line up of SMB, his killer instinct is gone right now... naging inconsistent na din.. If he accepts that B-League offer last year baka bumalik siguro yung dating TR7 that we know... right now, Kiefer and Bolick is the best choice for PG position for Gilas mainly today thru beyond 2027... Dwight and Thirdy will be shoo ins for sure, especially that Parks is not interested on playing Gilas while Paras still has mental problem to resolve for... Hope that Oftana will play again for Gilas.. We badly need back up to these two guys...

Stop it Robert, don't make false assumptions. Romeo was killing and owning Mikey Williams head to head last semis, and nobody bats an eye dahil nga may negative reputation na si Romeo.

However, as much as I'm a fan of scoring PGs like Castro, Kiefer and Terrence. We won't be competitive world level kung magrerely tayo sa mga below 6 feet guards.

The perfect scenario was the Tab system where a lot of off-ball movement, and mostly mga wings and nauutilize like Ramos, Baltazar, and Tamayo, plus the constant involvement of Sotto and Kouame, and guys like Terrence should just have a role of coming off the bench, to give a shot in the arm and create a momentum, pagkina Kiefer or Terrence umiikot ang offense because of the DDO then ilista mo na 20 plus points parati ang tambak kapag elite physical teams na who likes to play full court defense all the way like NZ, smh.

The beginning of the end without a doubt.

Parang sirang plaka tayo lahat dito. The SEA games is supposed to be the perfect opportunity for young guys Like LeBron and Lepalam to hone their skills. Honestly, ano ba talaga hatak ng SBP? Are they even interested in sitting down with UAAP/NCAA officials?

Yeah, actually. I just hope that we can have the young guys compete in the SEA Games in May next year, while the A-team prepares for the WC in September of that year. Great opportunity, e, like you said.

Hypothesis, which probably many of us feel: Some SBP officials are stakeholders in the PBA, and if the PBA loses a huge part of its stake in the national team, said SBP officials would lose their own interest in the national team.

Who is the Most Talented Asian SF Gilas Faced in 2011-2019?

Bahrami (Iran)
El Khatib (Lebanon)
TJ Moon (Korea)
Other (???)

PS: Don't include Oceania

PSS: Usually We have another guard at 3. Our only Natural SF was Gabe.

Bahrami no question. We had no answer for him. Best we could do was limit his teammates' production. That was the key to our 2015 victory.

El Khatib was more of a 2001-2010 SF. Even so, we also couldn't stop him.
