They already have an excuse,Tab's system didn't work this time and Gilas need to go back to the proven small ball Pinoy style system.

If anything, they'll simply use the "we're already qualified" excuse.

If we lose all our games including the one against India, I'm bailing on this team for good.

I believe it was MJ who said expect disappointment and you'll never get disappointed.

Seriously, Indian basketball has been gaining traction lately and they even beat us to producing a local talent for the nba. there's no doubt their rising stars like princepal singh will cause headaches for PH in future matchups.

There's a difference between getting drafted and making an impact. Korea was also able to produce an NBA draft pick in Ha Seung Jin but his career was short lived.

All this talk about Kai making the NBA doesn't bear any fruit unless he gets significant minutes and post stats passable for a role player. This is why I'm not that excited especially since his projection currently stands at 2nd Rd pick.

It would be great to finally capture that elusive NBA Draft Pick for a local Pinoy talent. But we shouldn't be too satisfied.

for what it's worth, india being able to produce an NBA-caliber player is a positive sign as far as indian basketball is concerned. granted it has over a billion people, the fact remains that it has become a proven source of nba level talent. if we add resources and a capable coaching staff, india will give the future iterations of gilas a run for their money.

The heavy presence of guards like Heruela, Montalbo, JGDL, and even Castro might be called up and he is even looking for more PG is bad sign. I hope Coach Chot learned from that 2017 demolition from Korea and we are also demolish by Lebanon on that same tournment. DDO and Small ball will never work anymore, our opponents are not that dumb anymore to fall to that puso puso adrenaline rush DDO and small ball thing.

I watched again the Fiba cup 2017 and it really showed that small ball killed us and DDO. Imagine there was an instance that Romeo, Castro, Wright, Abueva and Japeth at the same time, my goodness. Korea demolished our team and it is so obvious we cannot even rebound and defend well because of the lenght of the guards and forwards of korea and the DDO is heavily scouted.

Coach Chot wasted our good big men in that line up especially Christian, and Junmar by just using them for drop passes. Very few PNR and very few post plays. I notice when Coach chot panics he runs to small ball play.

This Korean line up is stronger with the addition of Rattlife. I hope it is not a bad sign of small again with the heavy presence of guards like Heruela, Montalbo, JGDL, and even Castro might be called up and he is even looking for more PG, wow. I hope Coach Chot learned from that 2017 demolition from Korea and we are also demolish by Lebanon on that same tournment.

DDO and small ball and culture of hero ball of small guards taking over must end in Philippines basketball.

Yeah, the culture of hero ball of the guards must end, especially with this iteration of Gilas where the best players, outside of Dwight, are the bigs (Tamayo, Baltazar, Kai, Kouame, possibly Edu).

The same with Chot's 3-guard lineups, now that he has FIBA-sized options at the wing like Navarro, Oftana, and even Baltazar and Tamayo. Guys like Pogoy, Perez, and Ryan Reyes should be at the 2 at the most, if ever.

They already have an excuse,Tab's system didn't work this time and Gilas need to go back to the proven small ball Pinoy style system.

that simply means that they do not really have an idea how tab's system works.

If we look at Greg's case, Ballungay should stay here in the country atleast 10 years to be consider, That is only way... If he go to Japan it means residency is over.. So with Ateneo, he should stay 4-5 years while in PBA 5-6 years..

That's not how it works . a decision for exception is only made when an application is made for someone's case. In the case of Greg the reason it took so long is an application was only made in 2018..
Anyway you shouldn't assume and speculate to much on things simply based on the information available to the public via media..
Things don't seem what they're based on info limited available to the public

Coach Tab is a great example of looking at the future. He is willing to gamble and willing to see mistakes from Dwight in his PG duties, and Tamayo and Baltazar as small forwards. Even on Kai that he allows him to drive and do some coast to coast sometimes, if you watch our first game against Korea last Clark bubble 2021. That is why Coach Tab called some of our local coaches tactically immature.

Exactly. Tab looked to expand the skillsets and playing positions of Tamayo, Baltazar, Dwight, Dave, and Suerte. The first two became combo forwards, while the latter three are being developed as combo guards. Actually, Tab is looking to develop 6'5" Josh Lazaro, who was a 3-4 in high school, as a 2-3, and Kyle Ong, who was a 5 in high school, as a 3-4.

The closest local coach I could see that is willing to take a similar approach is Goldwin Monteverde, when he was with NSNU. He started the development of Tamayo and Kevin Quiambao as combo forwards, by having them switch into perimeter players and developing their handle and jumper. Hope he can do the same with Bismarck Lina, and build on the combo guard potential of Torculas and Cansino in UP.

The Ateneo and Beda systems also have produced players that could be internationally viable as wings. JB Bahio, Justin Sanchez, Rhayyan Amsali for Beda, and Lebron Lopez and Josh Lazaro for Ateneo, despite those two playing 4 and 5, respectively.

Would Chot and the other local coaches be willing to expand the player skillsets the way Tab did with the amateurs when he was with Gilas?

Why the way Chot said "di kaya ni Junemar", it is quite obvious that chot is could not combine development and being competitive at the same time.

Thirdy playing for Gilas is confirmed. Now, why is the SBP heads panicking about players playing overseas again if there wasn't any problems for the B-League guys coming back to play here while the league is on FIBA break? That's what Snow Badua and the other guys were hampering about Tab being involved into bringing these players overseas. Eh mukha ngang mas available pa overseas players compared to the PBA guys sans the TNT players. The PBA season will still be on-going while the qualifiers are being held here.

Has someone from the media bothered asking Dwight if he asked permission from his BLeague team or is he really risking violating his contract just to play for Gilas? I really don't think the BLeague is preventing any of their players from suiting up for FIBA games during the middle of a season - 3 Aussies in the league will be suiting up for the Boomers this month too - so if the SBP wants any of the Pinoys in the BLeague all they need is ask. Even Kai Sotto can play if the SBP wants to, his 36ers teammate Nick Marshall is also going to play for the Boomers this month.

Truth to be told its the local leagues - PBA (save for TNT), UAAP and NCAA - which are not allowing their players to join and reinforce Gilas so all that "we don't have players due to Japan" yarn by Yes Man Panlilio is not only a lie but major bull crap.

Yeah, para ngang mas available ang overseas players. The season schedule of the local leagues really risks the availability and commitments of the players during FIBA tournaments. And teams will think of their own before the national team, usually (which really sucks).

Re: Dwight, I think he has the same clause as the GDL brothers, Thirdy, et al. in their B.League contracts which allows them to go to Gilas when called up.

Correct me if wrong aren't the B league players seemingly more available to Gilas than San Miguel players ?

Yes, seemingly.

And, the only FIBA-eligible SMC players that are of good use to Gilas right now are Perez, Terrence Romeo, Arvin Tolentino (for development), and to an extent June Mar, Japeth, and probably even Marcio Lassiter.

That WC , we are just carried by a NBA quality Blatche. Coach Chot still use to much small ball in that WC. i even notice he let, Castro, Paul lee and Tenorio play at the same time. DDO really made us so tired and relied to much on three point shooting that is why we lost games in WC. The Tropang Gilas today is much better and has more plays and less DDO. But i still saw that dreaded small ball sometime, but since it is PBA game then, it is forgivable. DDO and Small ball Pilipinas version will not work, period.

Just to remind, Blatche was on the bench when we made the run in the first quarter and only scored 6 points to comb back from 15 pts lead by ARG in the 4th quarter, RDO and Alapag scored more. I will never say Blatche wasn't a big help but every one contribute to a very respectable outing of our NT. For me, DDO didn't made us tired as we use 12 man rotation. Its just lack of experience in that scenario, like how JC lost the ball.

The 2014 WC team simply had better preps and Andray being fit was a major factor. Everyone showed up.

The roster composition has changed, though. Apart from good perimeter shot creators like Juan, Dwight, and probably Thirdy and Abarrientos, we also have guys who can score in the post, like Kouame, Tamayo, Balti, and in the future, Kai. Like I said, apart from Dwight, our bigs and forwards are our biggest asset moving forward.

When we have all of Kouame, Balti, Carl, and Kai, Chot will have to deviate from DDO a bit and try to involve them, not just have them wait for kickouts, drop-offs, and putback opportunities. Have them get touches in the post, or off PnR amd PnP action, or have Ange, Balti, and Kai run the rim.

Just add wrinkles to his offense, is all. Involve the bigs more, and get used to a taller but non-shot creating 3 (unless if that 3 is Dwight).

But again, as I repeatedly say, to be fair to Chot, he has improved his defense in the PBA. His TNT is a good defensive team, quite disciplined and full of hustle. Hope he can translate that to SoKor and NZ.

Yes. Same sentiments. That is why I think Tabs system should be used. He trained the players for it. The 3 guy does not need to be a good at 1 on 1. Just decent enough to run a basic PNR. When you have a tall 3 guy that is deadly enough.

SBP has to make it a priority to get Balti and Carl. The tall 3/4 is important for Tabs system. Navarro and Rosario can pinch hit a bit but they are shorter.

Re: Dwight, I think he has the same clause as the GDL brothers, Thirdy, et al. in their B.League contracts which allows them to go to Gilas when called up.

B.League follows the clause of making players in FIBA Windows. In a Niigata game, there is an advertisement on the court for WorldCup 2023. It is both an interest for Japan and Philippines to promote FIBA events as both countries are hosting. So the PR spin that players were lost to foreign leagues is so stupid. if SBP doesn't want to pay the release stipulation to B. League, then why did Dwight and Thirdy became available?

it is SBP that should clean house and fix the d*mn basketball calendar.
