Philippines Senior National Team Thread Vol. V

Yup, FIBA's new revision as far as Chapter 3: Article 22 to 29 Change of National Status clearly stated that

The provisions of this article shall not apply retroactively. A National Member Federation may request the change of national status of a player who appeared on the Final Team Delegation Roster of any of the competitions listed in this article, before the entry into force of this article (5 December 2025), under the conditions and circumstances set out in Article 3-25 and 3-26, and provided the player fulfils the conditions established in article 3-14 to 3-20.

Kamaka Hepa was part of Team USA 2018 U18 Gold medal team
Jalen Green was part of Team USA 2016 U16, 2018 U17 WC and 2019 U19 Gold medal team
JJ Mandaquit was part of Team USA 2023 U16 and 2024 U17 WC Gold medal team
Dylan Harper was part of Team USA who finished 4th in U19 WC

that is why the big question is are they covered by the new provision which is not retroactive and only take effect last Dec. 5, 2025?

The provisions of this article shall not apply retroactively. A National Member Federation may request the change of national status of a player who appeared on the Final Team Delegation Roster of any of the competitions listed in this article, before the entry into force of this article (5 December 2025), under the conditions and circumstances set out in Article 3-25 and 3-26, and provided the player fulfils the conditions established in article 3-14 to 3-20.

now, if a particular player(s) and the new National Member Federation agreed on the switching of national status

as per Chapter 11: Fees and Allowances Article 348.

Compensation Fee, Administrative fee(change of national status) Amount of CHF 2,000 to 20,000

if converted into dollar the amount of CHF 2,000, if the exchange rate is 1 CHF = 1.25 USD

then USD 1.25 * 2,000 = 2,500 then multiply it by current exchange rate of 59.27 therefore it's Php 148, 175.00

if converted into dollar the maximum amount of CHF 20,000 using the same formula it's Php 1,185,400.00

note: the exchange rate was based today Jan. 9, 2026

thus SBP willing to shell out that amount to facilitate and assist a particular prospect(s)? are they enthusiastic to that?

all we know is that both Metro Pacific Group of Co. and San Miguel Group of Co's year to year revenue is always in a

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year level.

JJ was a member of gold medal winner USA team in last year’s World U-19 Championship thus joining Jalen and Dylan as tied and locked with USA Basketball. FIBA Americas U-18 continental competition which Kamaka played is not among competitions listed that restrict players to switch federations. Hepa can still suit for Gilas if release by his federation USA Basketball…

If theres is anyone who will easily for us is Mandaquit..not retroactive nga.. so not included the tournaments in 2025 below..

The more I watch Jordan Heading's game with TnT the more I get frustrated that he is still not in coach Tim's Gilas pool despite of the obvious fact that Gilas lacks a reliable 3-pt shooter & Heading could easily be that guy.

One thing about Heading is that he's not a one dimensional player. No one can describe Heading as "he's just a mere pure shooter which can't do other things". Heading can also slash, finish fast break & has some pull up jumpers from medium range. Plus he's not a bad defender.
Or just MVP camp put 1 player per team policy, Like what SMC camp in the past Gilas editions.. And CTC just likes Oftana more than Heading.. What do you think?

I think being a swingman or a reliever for Brownlee is the reason for Oftana’s inclusion in the past. Of course CTC likes him. With the resurgence of KQ, the presence of Oftana is just redundant. In order to elevate Heading, CTC really need to get rid of at least one of his regular backcourt players. He can keep his Ginebra guards Thompson and Abbarrientos.

In international setting, Heading is > than Juani, CJ and Newsome…. And he had extensive exposure in leagues like ABL, Taiwan’s T1 and Japan’s B.league all of which utilise FIBA rules.

I don't think the situation with coach Tim's SMC-backed Gilas right now is similar to the situation with the MVP-backed Gilas team of coach Chot becoz in the latter's case it was SMC group which implemented the one-player-per-team policy (though this is unofficial policy). With coach Tim's current Gilas team on the other hand, I think wala namang policy ang MVP group ng one-player-per-team. In fact NLEX doesnt even have a representative at Gilas. I think TnT or MVP won't mind if coach Tim adds Jordan Heading to the Gilas pool.

I remember this MBA player who played for the Negros Slashers during that time.

one of the victims of that so-called "Knee Jerk Reaction" during that time.

the irritating part was his sought after daughter will be playing for Gilas one of these days

but the OG was blacklisted here.

very enlightening interview coming from Sir Bill Velasco

Who made that decision,is that person still around and asks that person the why, what and how?

Correct but eventually the best case we had is in 2017 cycle we still gouped wit australia, the qualifiers is much bigger weigh now for the ranking for world cup..
We have a dream to be the best in Asia , right? Is there any bragging rights by winning games in FIBA world cup qualifiers? This is just a qualifiers.. when the last time we won a gold in FIBA Asia?

Same as me. I prefer that Gilas to be group with those 2 Oceania teams as it elevate our game. Complacency is no room for team construction and prep if we know we are facing and playing against superior opposition. The mentality should be like “ bring them on”…
With this new format, we will always face both Australia and NZL more often.. but for me, if we want to beat them regularly, playing NBL professionally is a must, so that they will be familiarize more how they are playing and their physicality.. same goes why Europeans going to NBA, is to familiarize with American brand of basketball.. I wondered why after Kai sotto, there is no other Pinoy players trying to play in NBL...

Robert the silver medallist in asia cup was bamboozled by korea..no one treats the asian cup as a bigwig anymore..

That is also a mind blowing to me.. TNT is one of those only teams that is not always hesitated to have their players for national team, even at cost of winning a PBA championship.. I think one of those reasons why Heading not getting any Gilas calls because of Chua's personal issues against players who are declining to be part of his teams in the PBA.. Heading, Bolick are once under SMC farm teams Northport and Dyip.. but both declined to be traded to either teams in SMC, thus Chua make it personal and silently ordering Tim cone not including those players, maybe rumors only but there is a connection kasi.. another one is Baltazar, we all know SMC dreaming to have Baltazar at any SMC teams (he could be a perfect fit for Junmar as Arwind's replacement) but Balti always decline to join PBA draft until Converge got the 1st pick in 2024... Maybe sounds crazy but may connections kasi.. What Matthew Wright says in the interview with Jared Dillinger's podcast, There is politics inside SBP camp.. that's why Philippine basketball can't reach their fullest potential...

That's normal in basketball games.. Puerto Rico was upset twice by number 95 ranked team Jamaica.. Korea beating China last window is not the real basis that Korea is already better than China.. Korea simply prepared that window while China is not fully prepared, since the CBA was in off season, so Chinese players are not yet in fully conditioned.. if we based your statement, Jamaica should now better than Puerto Rico, right?

Not a basis but the game has weight.. because of that sweep china is forced to win games now..buti if just one game..

Weight for qualifying at world cup.. but it doesn't mean they are now better.. there is a difference between a qualifier games and an actual FIBA Asia cup itself.. in world cup qualifiers, Teams will just prepared for just one or two teams while in proper FIBA Asia tournament, you have to prepare for whole tournament.. Kaya mas matimbang Ang continental tournaments because teams are all preparing for a whole month (Gilas lang naman di prepared dun since they just training for just 2 weeks).. that china team faced by Koreans are unprepared, no direction and unfocused... I think the silver medalist line up of China will beat those Koreans who played last window.. that's because that silver medalist team was more prepared and more cohesive than the Chinese team last window.. Wala nga dun Yung best PG nila last Asia cup (Zhao Rui), remember they almost beat Australia, they just lose by a point, I don't think the Koreans who played last window can go toe to toe vs Aussies.. Zhou Qi is already done, wasted product to me.. I think China is now more tuning to Yang Hansen as their main center for them..

  • Kai Sotto: 7'2" (86")
  • June Mar Fajardo: 6'10" (82")
  • AJ Edu: 6'10" (82")
  • Quentin Millora-Brown: 6'10" (82")
  • Carl Tamayo: 6'7" (79")
  • Justin Brownlee: 6'5" (77")
  • Kevin Quiambao: 6'5" (77")
  • Dwight Ramos: 6'4" (76")
  • Jaime Malonzo: 6'4" (76")
  • Juan Gomez de Liaño: 6'0" (72")
  • Scottie Thompson: 6'1" (73")
  • RJ Abarrientos: 5'11" (71")
Good strong team. Hepa, 6'9", can replace malonzo at sf, and the team becomes a team solid in all frontline positions.

Abarrientos is not particularly reliable, but because the first two nz-au games are in the philippines, he might be able to deliver. Anyway, thompson and de liano are reliable at point so nothing is really lost.

Why is kouame still not considered a local player!? He is practically in the philippines his entire gaming life.
