Philippines Cadet/Developmental Team

Guys what are the chances that the philippines get the gold medal for both seaba and sea games?

I believe they will get Gold (For both) because of their talent, but not without a fight. The gilas cadets are essentially college players
while the others like Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore teams will be sending seasoned pros who have played in the ABL or Asia-level competitions.
(Even if they are everyone's punching bag at asian level) it is still a much higher level than college games...

thoughts?

We have been sending college players for years. Ravena and Parks have played SEA Games basketball since 2011. Belo and Ferrer played in 2013. These four are the nucleus of the team and have international experience. If Lanete recovers from his injury, the backcourt will be even deadlier.

Among the five players I mentioned, Ravena and Parks are at an entirely different level. These are potential game-changers in the Asian scene, projected to be the future starting backcourt of Gilas. Belo was Sinag's leading scorer in 2013, and has only improved since then. The three wingmen (Parks, Belo, Ferrer) are tall for their position.

Four years ago, the running joke was that one could send the NU Bulldogs (perennial cellar-dwellers in the UAAP) and still win the gold. Four years later, it still isn't a lot closer.

I don't think that will stay that way for long. In last year's Asian U18, Malaysia gave our boys a hard time. They had some close games with the other teams too.

Singapore gave our team a scare in 2013....

I prefer to see it more as an aberration than a trend. Of course we're not going to beat the other teams by 50 every tournament. But the feeder system, however flawed it is, is still miles ahead of all other ASEAN nations. Plus we have leagues all year round. A D-League team could easily beat the ABL champs without imports.

not only singapore but also thailand and malaysia. and again this year if sinag doesn't take this seriously, i wouldn't be surprised to see an upset.

the sinag players most of them are practicing with their DLeague team and their school team plus in the evening practicing with sinag. burnout or fatigue might cost us the gold.

Nah....burnout wont be a factor...we have a very deep team... Its only overconfidence that would kill us...

The training and teaching of Tab to the Sinag players is more vital than the tournament itself, but dont get me wrong there is a competion in sea level but still a competition were we are favored to win..

All the ASEAN teams are copying our style of recruitment. I believe Vietnam and Thailand will be parading more foreign based players come SEABA and SEAG time.
Malaysia have a Filipino coach for the longest time, and they are sticking to his system for better or worse. Malaysian Players are improving.
Also, I think all serious ASEAN teams will be bringing in a naturalized player to counter Douthit.
Also, Vietnam is trying to mimic Australia's sports academy program. So even if they lose now, come 2018, they may be a force to reckon with especially if we are going to bring in the same style we are doing now.. which is letting college players to represent the SEABA.
Don't get me wrong here. I am just saying, these guys are really bent on TRYING defeating us.. So we really need to improve the level of play of our college players and amateurs + widen the base of selection towards the other parts of the archipelago.

I have followed Phi. basketball for more than 2 decades now & everytime SEA Games & SEABA is coming, people would always say, "Our South East Asian rivals have improved a lot so our team can't be complacent". Yet except for the 1989 SEA Games, we have lorded it over South East Asia for the past decades now & we have beaten everybody by significant margins.

While its true that our SEA neighbors have continued to improved & I agree that the gap is closing, I believe & I'm confident this current cadet team that will be competing in both SEABA & SEA games this year will still lord it over the region. While I expect some little rough sailing in some games, I'm confident that once this team gets its bearings, no team in South East Asia will be able to stop it on its road to the gold medal podium.

Wag lang tayong maging complacent, I'm confident we will beat everybody in both SEABA & SEA Games.

True. I guess people are just trying to remind others that we should not look down on our ASEAN counterparts or even boast that we can defeat them by 50 ANYTIME!
However, we all know that we can still lord it over.. Heck, even until 2019. Note however, and that is just me being cautious, compared to the past decades, there is better infrastructure in place, and more options for other teams to look into. We actually pave the way for them to look at those options. That is why I think, we need to upgrade our level of play come 2018... Lucky enough, we are also starting to elevate the play of our college players by adding imports a couple of years ago AND allowing more Fil-Foreign to play in the D-League. Also, we allow our college players and amateurs to play in lesser tournaments (relative to the seniors team) such as the Jone's Cup.

Here we go again. No, no one can beat us at this level. There is nothing to worry about.

If we're overconfident, we'll probably win by a disappointing 10 points or so.

hahaha! better to be cautious than get caught sleeping is all I'm saying.
As I said, we are elevating our game as we have coach Tab to help us. by that, we can be confident that other countries will be hard pressed to really improve by super leaps and bounds if only to be able to give us a scare. Beyond 2019 is kinda a different story.. I say, we be really cautious and prepare our college players right or we may see ourselves losing by that time.
