Philippines Cadet/Developmental Team

who are they and where are they? remember cadets are NON-PBA players.. Sanggalang, Slaughter will go to the PBA come November through the draft..

so who are the players you think are good enough to be in the cadets pool with your requirements?

hire me.. and i will tell you who and where they are....

On your proposal that the majority of our players of the cadet team be at least 6-foot-6, do we really have an abundance of 6-6 & above players in the amateur ranks?

You don't improve the ceiling of a certain team by recruiting as many "tall" players as you can while disregarding speed & flexibility. You can't recruit as many as seven or eight 6-foot-6 & above players to comprise the 12-man roster without compromising speed & flexibility. Players will be playing out of position. Alangan namang gawin mong shooting guard si Norberto Torres, or gawin mong small Forward si Van Opstal, or Kevin Ferrer converted to point guard.

Forming a competitive team isn't done that way. I agree that we really need to improve the height of our national team, but not at all cost. Its a balancing act. One should improve the team's ceiling without compromising speed & flexibility. That's coach Chot Reyes philosophy with Gilas-2. We all know that results.

this is a cadet/developmental team right?!..what i did say is stop inviting small players (under 6ft)..2 to 3 players who are under 6ft is enough in our cadet/developmental team...

"Alangan namang gawin mong shooting guard si Norberto Torres, or gawin mong small Forward si Van Opstal, or Kevin Ferrer converted to point guard." i did not say to convert them from their natural position..i am saying is to train them shooting from the perimeter give them confidence(coz building confidence starts in the training)...much better kung magkakaganyan at humusay sila sa mga sinabi mong maging position nila diba!..

Cadet team is composed of borderline pros (20+ yrs old). Its a bit late to change playing position. The goal of the team is International exposure and practice with the pros(Gilas). If you want to develop tall perimeter players, you have to start young. Find tall teens and train them and make them compete against taller players. And this is hard and expensive to implement.

The problem right now is even if you are a 6'4 HS kid with solid ball handling skills, you'll most likely be the tallest on your team and the coach will ask you to play PF/C. Then the 6'4 kid will be guarded by 6'2 kid and he'll just bull his way inside. This happens in all levels, heck even in pick up games, I'm just 5'7 but if I have 2 other smaller teammates, whether they can dribble well or not, I'll be forced to play SF.

i agree in what you say..in filipino term nga "gumagastos na din sila sa cadet team why not itodo na nila ang paggastos"...

-first if all, no one's interested in hiring you, remember we are all arm chair professionals here,If i was in charge of hiring coaches,I'd likely hire some people here but not you. second, you can only make most of the players available (if they're allowed by their school for student athletes, pro team if they are a pro,if they are allowed by their parents and last but not the least if they're allowed by their handlers/managers/agents)

thirdly, you can't really say how much budget you can put in Gilas

FYI:

1) the team is not subsidized by the government or government allotted. So you have no say even if you're in the country's top 10 tax payers, not if you're MVP of course
2) you can't dictate MVP's spendings on the team
3) be glad you have the help of the private sector that has been helping the team and shelling out Millions of pesos annually.

i really feel bad to be hard on a newbie but please, try to suggest something, make it something feasible. And yes this is an english thread..not my policy though. maski ako nahihirapan.

I see Van Opstal as the next Mark Pingris. He has the athleticism to be the next Pingris. His advantage is he is taller so he has more upside than pingris. He just needs to develop more aggressiveness in rebounding and defense and attack mode at the low post. Almazan has potential but he must play as powerforward.

Let's just hope he sticks to basketball hehehe :)

Pingris is TENACITY which unfortunately Opstal lacks... its a mindset built through adversity... more than desire, its a hunger to grab all opportunities that comes ones way... thus we have the Abueva and the Castros... adversity, often forced, can also be programmed, but which I don't observe is being done to Opstal... too many players these days are too cuddled, they lose the sense of urgency...

Van Opstal may turn up another Jason Ballesteros. A bust.

How i wish that MVP has bottomless pocket so that buy the San Miguel franchise in ABL and have the Cadets team plus our naturalize player play there.

If you assemble a Philippine Developmental team or Cadet team or Training pool, who are the top 24 players below 20 years old you can suggest to put on developmental team?

Ill ask this question again.

What is the blueprint plan for our cadets? aside from the Seagames what are their competitions they will join?

These were the tournaments the Cadets participated as of last 2 seasons:

1. Dubai Invitationals
2. Jones Cup
3. SEA Games
4.
5.

What are the other tourneys prepared for them?

They cant join the Jones cup as it is right smack the UAAP season.

Your correct with the Dubai invitationals, hopefully they can join that.

Just a question, given the huge gate attendance we had in the recent FIBA-ASIA and a huge backing of Iran, taipei, china and korea found here in the country, can we do a tournament like the jones cup maybe invite teams from lithuania and New zealand to join too. Then we can have the cadets and national team compete too.

I maybe mistaken but trying to read between the lines from the insiders, there is no basic format or plan in place. There might be hints or suggestions from one insider to another but as to something concrete and in place, I think not. In my short talks with Chot, I believe he is responsible for appropriating funds for SBP's use from MVP's hedge fund. The buck starts and stops with Chot. If he says, there is no plan for the cadets, then there is no plan for the cadets. So far, he is merely dropping hints of plans but nothing concrete.

Tenacity and aggressiveness that's what i hope he will develop, he has all the tools to be a very good powerforward, to be our next Pingris. He has height heft, etc. I hope he develop those traits. He has to develop the heart for the game. Basketball is not always just about talent or athleticism, you also have to have the heart, to give all you got.

By the way i like our future talent pool, we have allot of good guards, shooters, and powerforward, we just lack a 6'11 to 7'0 center, but that is where the naturalize player comes in.

My future first 5:

1. Ray Ray Parks
2. Kiefer Ravena.
3. Arnold Van opstal
4. Sanggalang
5. Naturalize player

may be OT griping but thanks to Toroman for basically ruining the careers of 6'7 Jason Ballesteros and 6'6 Magi Sison. Let's just hope our future big men fall into better hands.

Sana nga, sana nga. A player who will play through pain because he is professional is hard to find. A player who will play through pain because of national pride is much harder to find

I see Adamson's John Brondial as the next Pingris with his stats 8.8ppg, 10.4rpg this season , he was like a young Pingris, "not really much" of an offensive player (just like Pingris early on his career) but a rebounding monster. I think Pingris is much more athletic but they have the same built (both undersized power forwards), same height 6'4-6'5, and they somehow have a resemblance on how they look.I just hope Brondial would continue to improve learning how to play small forward maybe add some ball handling skills, outside shooting and improve a bit of his speed.Of course Pingris is a different animal as of now, but if Brondial improves a lot more this is IMO would be his maximum potential.

I think he is a better comparison, he just needs to get stronger. I noticed when he faces tough big men he tends to shy away from contact.

Van Opstal and Brondial should be tutored by both Ping and Ranidel, but Brondial should learn also to handle the ball and shoot beyond the 3 point arc because of his height.

as of now this is correct, where Chot will bring us is where we'll go. Chot gotten MVP's ear and he did it by achieving majority of the tasks he had asked Chot to do. So as of now the original GILAS program will not do, as Coach Chot goes around the world, he is to observe other national teams and find out what is the best program best suited for us or from bits and pieces from these other country's programs maybe we could develop something of our own as it must be considered that in our country we must try to make a way that all shareholders is happy.

Remember it also took USA Basketball sometime before finally settling down on what is the right thing to do. But still they also have imperfections as they still have no answer who is the best coach to take over when Coach K finally steps down. Going back to the Cadet program, hopefully soon we'll have something from Coach Chot, the SBP is now more focused to the feeder programs which are the age group grassroots programs.

On young FilFors I have to agree with Tac Padilla's recent statement, "that Fil-foreign prospects should show more genuine interest to represent the country than monetary rewards. It should be purely for the love of the country. If they play for us wala na sanang hihilingin pa. Playing for the country must be the priority.” I do believe there are still more Jozef Ereces out there.
