Philippines Cadet/Developmental Team

SBP finally strengthening ties with overseas team organizations. Now that they're there, appoint people from these networks to attend other showcase tournaments in Las Vegas.

During this time of the year, most of the talented US youth hoopers are in that city participating in tournaments. Now is the time to scour the 13U-15U tournaments to look for undiscovered Filfors.

A good idea would be to give a finder's fee to anyone who can discover an eventual Batang Gilas recruit. That is like weaponizing all the pinoys all over the world.

Sir Mets,

while they've already in Vegas, I think they should really emphasize more at their usual Pep talk the importance of that PH docs

if they could only tag along an embassy representative to somehow educate those who hasn't aware of it and somehow answered and address the usual concern about paperworks and legworks to avoid the usual complain/sentiments.

the last time I've heard that there's a handful of talent that hasn't been identified before who will participate on that particular occasion.

imagine I've always mentioning the cali kid Jared McCain then all of a sudden his name keeps on popping that he is a legit hafu as well.

Sir I think you are in a best position to answer his legitimacy considering the McCain family are within your area(?).

Corona, California is a diaspora of Latinos and Whites in that part of South Cal and I doubt if his white mother is a hafu.

anyway, were hoping our National Federation may discover some talents for next year's U16 tourney.

kailangan talaga natin bumawi sobrang kahiya hiya ung nangyari eh. trans. grassroot development is really needed.

McCain was a surprise for me too. I've seen him in person a couple of times and you could tell he was definitely nba-prospect material early on. I've seen his mom and always assumed she was Hispanic, but turns out she has Filipina blood. Corona is a perennial powerhouse in high school hoops in the whole country (Barefield is an alumni too).

That's why it's so important to build a network with the "elite" ball clubs in the US. Basically, you really just have to build a relationship with one club representing each of the sneaker companies...nike, adidas, under armour. From there heads of those teams would have the info for all their players.

Again I think the best way to do this is to offer an incentive for people that can discover eventual Batang Gilas players. For instance, if that was in place already, someone in McCain's circle might have persuaded him to identify himself early.

With regards to the legwork in obtaining the citizenship, I think since Clarkson has been visible in representing the Philippines, Filam families are mostly less hesitant in getting it. JC has been a good poster child for persuading these elite tier of prospects like Mandaquit to acknowledge their Pinoy ancestry.

Sir Mets,

Jared McCain already represented Uncle Sam in a sanctioned tournament and hasn't obtain a ph document so no chance as well.

compared to the JJ kid and Hepa(?) who already acquired it before turning 16 but had a fighting chance to be included in Senior team if they decided to change allegiance and the two NF agreed for the switch.

as for providing incentive to those people whose job is to identify talents well, people like you, Sir Dave, Sir Nardy and the rest of those people behind Fil-Nation Select, Tumakbo, NABA among others are in the best position for that noble task.

I stand to be corrected on this but as far as I know for now there's no money for our youth program unless the new ED had a new policy for such thing.

sana naman po meron "pang consuelo de bobo" na lang po sa tao na yun.trans. I don't think giving some token reward is a violation.

as I said many times before, SBP should designate a well respected person(s) to somehow assist those families as far as legworks are concern.

lately, Fil-Nation Select are conducting short seminars to those filipino communities esp. during events and camps.

First order of business is to get rid of that imbecile who has been mishandling the youth team, nepotism boy.

SBP has lot's of money as per Sir Dave's revelation.

now that those 2 conglomerates are manning the boat.

they could really entice those blue chippers.

in every Payslip we receive

NGBL is the perfect vehicle to develop the U-16 and U-18 NT programs. Also, with LA at the helm, he can be the perfect resource person for the Triangle Offense that the Senior NT is running. Also, the fact that this is supported by SMC via Chua, funds and resources will never be in short supply. No need for Santi Romero type of player

Hopefully this is created to augment the NBTC gressroots program and not to compete and magsapawan. It has happened before with 3X3.And with SMC sponsoring this one, any of the coaches in the picture should replace Josh as soon as he comes back home. Whats the use of all this grassroot program if at the end of the day si Josh ang coach at Minion ball DDO ang game nya

SBP Continuity Program in a Nutshell.
  • Youth teams coach Josh doesnt want to coach big tall project players . Only those who can run his DDO regardless of size .
  • Senior NT Tim Cone doesnt want 6'8 and under centers, and 6'6 players should be wing players, because of international basketball realities.

We will need someone who can tell Josh to try to stick with Tim Cone's vision of defense and size for all positions when it comes to roster construction. That, or replace him with a coach that will go by that vision. Even if we have to go small ball (a 6'4"-6'6" long wing playing as a wing at the 4, and a 6'6"+ center that plays as a PF even at the 5).

Practically, though, we can only have FIBA-sized players from 1-4 most of the time. It's rare that we have a guy like Kai.

The Reyes small ball, really, is just 3 guards or undersized players, unless if a guy like Dwight is the 4. Guys like Pogoy, Thirdy, Wright, Dwight, JC are threes because they can create their own shot. Gabe was the lone exception in that he was a big 3. Emphasis on shot creation. Not really small ball, because the bigs are still bigs. Troy, Ping, RDO are still PF's at the 4 spot. The centers in June Mar, Kai, Japeth are centers.

A proper small ball lineup focuses on the big positions, sacrificing size and strength for speed and versatility. A wing at the 4 like Battier, KD, Tatum, Marion, and/or a natural 4 at the 5 like Bosh and Draymond, even Stoudemire in the mid-2000's Suns. Furthermore, the best small ball lineups are versatile, which the Reyes system hasn't really taken into account.

"What we're trying to do is to start to document and put in our database the best players around the world so we can start to recruit good players, move them to the Philippines and help our national team program" - Coach Norman Black

SBP did bring some of the big guns here with Coach Norman, RH Jr and Jamie Malonzo.

Guys, I just wanna ask, is this grassroots development program by SBP eh nagkataon lang na nangyari during the term of Erika Dy as SBP Executive Director? Or this program is a brainchild of Erika Dy herself?

watch Josh Reyes waste all the effort of Norman Black, by forming a team with a 6-foot center.

Seems like the u16 to u18 teams exist out of compliance to FIBA and not for any other reason,
Someone finally said it.

2024 and still no grassroots program which we have been saying for the last 10 years.

And these teams are supposed to be our pipeline for future prospects for the senior team.

Since 2013, we have promoted just Kiefer, Thirdy, Matt and Mike Nieto, SJ, Carl, Kai, AJ, Juan GDL, Chiu, Carino, Mason, and Kobe.

We have to align the youth teams with the vision of Cone (and Tab before him) for the seniors. Look for tall wings and maybe guys tall enough to play 4 and 5. Guards with potential too. Dy and the new SBP President must make a point out of that.

It’s hard to figure out who pans out or develops, some guys end up plateauing, injuries or other factors can lead to players not fulfilling potential. Of the list of names given few are senior mainstays and some probably won’t play for Gilas again. Standouts with clear potential like Kai, Aj and Carl are hard to find
