Philippines Cadet/Developmental Team

Which begs the question in order of priority who are

1. List of Fil foreigner ineligibles in Philippine college who started residency before turning 19?

2. List of foreigners in Philippine colleges who started residency before turning 16? (they still need to be Naturalized via congress)

3. (Need 7 Years residency) list of Fil-foreign ineligibles who started residency before turning 21 ?

Sir Dave, If only those Overseas based youth team had the opportunity to play in the local NBL under tournament during their respective off-season at their respective territory aside from playing in the NBTC is also a good(additional) option to somehow establish that strong domestic connection moving forward

The pathway model pursued should be all those in NBTC team in March (year 11 around 17 years old ) who are promising (like Hepa , Ballungay) should expedite processing of passport, then the year after graduation, start serving residency in UAAP, if they're good enough field them in Batang Gilas like Spencer in 2019 as a 19 year old. , if you follow the pathway, you in essence r will be stream lining the pathway to get heaps of fil foreigners approved and exempted . Note if Phiipps represented Batang Gilas, like Zain , Gamber and Spenxer (all passport after 16), he like them would be eligible

It just takes planning, thing is no one in the SBP takes time to thing strategically about these things . Kind of incompetent realy

Phillips could have had represented Batang Gilas U18 if not for the pandemic. That could be another consideration for exemption.

I'm super confident if Mike is placed in the WC roster he will be cleared as a local. It's basically the same principle of when Spencer was cleared for the U19 WC in 2019. after getting his passport at 18 the year before, there is no such thing as it applies only for youth tournaments but not seniors LOL

Jonel Policarpio with 3 triples in the DLSU-Adamson game yesterday. Looks impresive.
He hasn't shown enough slashing moves though so far. I think he's more known as a slasher.

If only Al Panlilio & his people in SBP think the same way U do.

How old is Policarpio? He hasn't played college ball yet right? If he's 19 or younger, then his upside is really promising.

I think Policarpio is 20 or 21 now. I think igsakto lang yung level of talent nya for his current age. He just needs to play in the higher level & get tested there. Good thing he's now with La Salle & might debut for the Green Archers in the senior level UAAP basketball this season.

Perhaps being elevated to the Gilas cadet pool should be the next step to further enhance his development. He has a lot of upside eh, good size for a small forward, athletic, incredible wingspan & of course the skills - shooting & ball handling.

We need to do a better job with enabling Gilas prospects (yes I see Policarpio as one) to gain the necessary experience in their crucial development years. The age of 18-22 is very crucial and with proper handling growth trajectory can be exponential. Now that he's already in the tail-end of that and he is just starting college ball is a waste, especially since he has the size and body to play up much earlier.

A big part of development comes from the level of one's competition.

The NCAA naman, we have some progressive guys like Charles Tiu and maybe Yuri Escueta. Too bad that the NCAA doesn't have FSA's anymore, because with a tall FSA around, guys like Will Gozum and Bismarck Lina would see more reps at 4, and guys like Jalbuena, Puno, Ethulle, and maybe Sumabat and Sangco would see more time and development at 3.

From what i see, its good that both CYE and CCT are already using those guys as wings as both teams are fortunate to have tall bigs, beda has jopia and teruel, csb has lepalam and turco. Aside from the 2, i think only letran and eac have that tall big and they aint even playing that much. Besides getting whalloped by teams that have fsa (ehem jru vs ateneo), guys like cade flores who should be at the 3 are forced to play in the post. I mean even naascu have fsa and look good st claire is in filoil.

If ncaa wont bring back its fsa's, teams should just probably play postionless basketball like what ive seen at times with benilde this preseason. There were time CCT would roll out a lineup that has a guy like sangco or marasigan at 6'3-6'4 being the tallest, but you can see them around the court, bringing up the ball, rotating and not sticking to the post. Atleast this way undersized players would still develop their perimeter skills and shooting.

Playing positionless basketball wherein everyone is a guard (or a wing if 196-199cm or taller if fast enough), and can keep up on the perimeter, is actually what I've been advocating for in the past years, if a team doesn't have a tall FSA, or a 201cm+ bigman. At least for the college level and below. Actually, dapat nga If boxing out is an issue, then it honestly should be taught to everyone. Gang rebound, mga ganun. Screening should also be taught to everyone, given the outlook of recent offenses.

Experience is also a crucial ingredient.

We can teach 6'5 guys dribbling drills and all but unless he gets to actually use it in a real game, then it will be half-baked. There's no substitute for actually experiencing being "pressed" or double-teamed and a kid has to handle that pressure.

Skills are easy to teach the younger the player is. The tricky part is having a league wherein tall players are allowed to use those skills (handle/shoot/create) while they are still at a young age (high school and earlier). Most youth leagues are diluted when it comes to height. That is why those with potential (height) has to have a play up mentality.

NZ little secret , our top High school players (e.g young Webster , Adams , Nance ) all played vs pros and imports in the NZ NBL from16 to 18 yrs old , prior to going to Div 1 NCAA.

UAAP teams should have 2 way development arrangements for most promising High school players where they play both for the HS and college team.

Id prefer if they be allowed to play tier 2 basketball like the MPBL, Filbasket or PSL.

Not a bad concept. Youth standouts' BBIQ and mental/emotional maturity/stability will be severely tested in such leagues.

JJ Mandaquit had just made the USA U16 Team...Thanks SBP lol

It's funny how clueless people were impressed with how 19 year olds "outplayed" Mandaquit in the recent NBTC tournament.

Our youth development mentality in a nutshell. Win youth tournaments by fielding players as old as possible and not encourage promising youth prospects to play up.

Yup give the province teams their chance at glory to win with overage players and zoning to death.

The onus on teams to use the NBTC for player development and identification ( i try to send kids 16 and Below), there is no point on fielding a player already committed to a college program simply to win , it defeats the purpose

The US system is actually flawed and hypocritical. Big business college programs have been taking advantage of NIL of players and forcing them to play for free .
in many many society's it's dishonest to use Universities who's focus is supposedly education to mix with big time commercial sports

Promising club players can still study wtih financial aide from clubs.

The US big programs are no different than any professional sports team they are just pretending to be amateur.

It comes with flawed consequences. Young Euro players are vastly more prepared and trained than their US counterparts. . The Philippines shoudl follow the Euro club system not the US pa amateur college system

Id prefer if they be allowed to play tier 2 basketball like the MPBL, Filbasket or PSL.

I had actually proposed that the top collegiate and even B-teams play in pro or semi-pro leagues that Sikatrix mentioned, instead of having separate collegiate leagues. In La Liga, this is the system with reserve teams, which are mostly 17-22-year-olds. They play amongst pros in a lower division than their senior team. And, what sir DAdmiral said is legit, the clubs are in charge of your study. They ensure that you study so that you have prospects outside sports. Playing against seasoned pros or semi-pros helps the development of the kids.

As for collegiate teams, they can be promoted to the first tier. The B-teams can play, but they must be at least one division lower than the A team.
