Philippines Cadet/Developmental Team

No more excuse, hopefully

No more excuse, hopefully

This development may be huge for PHL Basketball:

http://www.interaksyon.com/article/...ation-as-ph-schools-sync-calendars-with-asean

I may have been the very first advocate of changing the collegiate leagues' schedule from the first semester to the second semester. Back in 2005, Senator Manuel (Lito) Lapid came up with a Senate resolution pleading for basketball unity. At that time, the BAP was still running the show but we just got suspended because there were two warring NSA's in basketball, the other being Pilipinas Basketball (PB).

Senator Lapid's staff met with me and one of my proposals, which was deftly included in the resolution, was my suggestion to have the collegiate leagues (NCAA, UAAP, etc) schedule their basketball games in the second semester to allow the collegiate players to play for the PHL national team in international meets normally scheduled from July to October. It wasn't a "a-ha" idea as it was pretty logical, but I was surprised that at that time, no one was proposing this. That resolution was eventually filed but it never got first base with the collegiate leagues.

But with this news development, the possibility of having the players available from July to October is high. The one thing though is that since the international meets will begin before the leagues start, the schools may still be hesitant to lend their players for fear of injury.

This is still a good sign, nonetheless. Let's hope the SBP can sit down with the leagues and map out a better schedule ahead.

Well, "some" schools may be hesitant to lend their players to the national team (I'm talking here not only of the senior level but the youth level as well) for fear that their top players might get injured playing for flag & country, but I think majority of these schools will be willing to cooperate with the SBP. Lets say 80% of these schools will be willing to lend their players, then that already is a welcome development for Phi. basketball.

I think the change of collegiate cage tournament schedule from 1st sem to 2nd sem will leave schools (colleges & high schools) with no excuse for their refusal to help the national team. In the past these schools would point to "conflict of schedule" as the reason for their refusal to lend players for the nat'l. team.

actually, anybody can shoot in a highlight video. not only shoot, some can dunk too :D
Are you really playing basketball or just a keyboard warrior? Have you watched the video? those 2 3 pointers that sent to double overtime? 30 points? 10-16 FG and 4-7 3pt FG? Against NCAA D1 school?

I think there's a big difference between a player's highlights involving 20 or more games & a player's highlight involving just 1 or 2 games. I can see where digitalsuperman & ZITAMAR are coming from despite their disagreement. digitalsuperman was emphasizing that highlight clips of a certain player could be deceptive and unreliable as they will only show the good side or the positives of a player & if those highlight clips involve voluminous games of a player, then it will roughly indicate how good that player is. For instance if one will watch the highlight clips of EJ Feihl's entire PBA career, then he might be impressed with Feihl. Of course we all know how Feilh was as a PBA player.

But w/ regards to that Ralph Banal highlight posted by ZIMATAR, that was from a certain game of Banal's school in the US which showed him scoring several times (& even hit those BIG shots) in one game. So I guess that highlight clip was a bit more indicative of what stuff this Ralph Banal is made of, although it could also be that that game was among Banal's best game in the US. It might be that Banal was just "in the zone" in that game.

We don't know how Banal had performed in other games. As they say, you can't assess a player by just watching one game alone

Oh a special 2 month "bridge program" again for UP Students:cool: or might as well extend the whole summer program to one whole sem...:cool:Many Students might graduate early or "catch up"

From mark molina's (FEU athletic director) tweet:

FEU has proposed to UAAP board to move Jrs Basketball to the 2nd semester. Among the reasons are: Make players available to FIBA youth tournaments that are always held august/september. Creating a permanent UAAP pool of refs and technical team will be more practical since there will be basketball tournaments from july to feb instead of just july to oct. Greater interest from students, alumni etc since it will not be overshadowed by the men's tournament. What do you guys think?

May minamarket...

hehe they starting to Market High School Basketball?

FEUs proposal is commendable.. however, how about the U-19 tournaments? that is also happening during those months.. and usually, they are either Seniors in HS or Freshmen in College..

or probably we can just send an all Senior HS team for the FIBA ASIA U-18 championships.. but how about if we qualify for the World U-19 championships?

Marcus

then maybe ferrer, Norbert, Jeron, Van Opstal, Brondial, Mariano, Olivares, Sumang. Would SBP consider getting players from Under 19 and 3x3?

He is now playing as a point guard for Division III NCAA school in the US.

I think he is one of our national team future PG since he has good PG skills and best of all he is a good shooter. I hope he develops more in the USA.

DLSU's final exams stand in way of Van Opstal's dream to play for national team
From: Richard DyOctober 23, 2013, 05:07 pm

LA Salle big man Arnold Van Opstal is thrilled at the prospect of representing the country in this year’s Southeast Asian Games, but is still awaiting clearance from his school before suiting up for the national team in the December 11-22 biennial meet.

The 6-foot-9 Fil-German, more than a week removed from helping the Green Archers win the UAAP men’s basketball championship against the University of Santo Tomas, said the SEA Games schedule actually falls on the academic finals examination of La Salle.

“I still have to talk to my professors about it (playing for the national team) because if ever, I’ll be gone for about two weeks and we’ll be having our finals then,” Van Opstal told Spin.ph on Wednesday.

But the third year International Studies major admitted having met already with national coach Jong Uichico on his possible inclusion in the national team seeking to continue its basketball dominance in Southeast Asia.

“I’ve met with coach Jong and he just asked me if I’m willing to play for the national team. So I just have to ask permission,” he said.

“But playing (for the national team) is one of my dreams.”

Since beating the Tigers during the emotionally-charged Game Three of the UAAP Finals, 71-69, Van Opstal and the Archers have had a busy week of celebration, culminating with the holding of `Animo Night’ last week at the campus grounds.

Thousands of students and fans alike gathered on the night of October 17 inside the Henry Sy Sr. Hall inside the La Salle-Taft campus to fete the athletes who brought honor to the school during the first semester of competition.

I think Van Opstal with his natural size 6' 7-8 and decent mobility could be a future asset to the NT. It's not his offesnive game which we have a lot of players, but if we can get a workhorse blue color worker who knows his role and focuses on defense and rebounding, that has a good body (6'8tish plus is well built and decently mobile) that's a valuable internationl PF in the making.
the thing good about Van is he's not a star , and knows his ticket to success is to play his role. plus it helps he's got a good frame , size and mobility to be of value.

In an interview guesting on a talk show when asked how tall he was, AVO's immediate response was 6'9"!

This kid has a proper attitude towards his goals--for he works very hard ford for it. A year ago or so, I was wondering where all the hype was coming from... but as of late that question has been positively addressed. AVO, or Arnold Van Opstsal, is for real... if he can be available to saddle up with Gilas and with his continued improvement, maybe a Pingris jump hook in his arsenal, our competitiveness among the elites in Asian basketball will have tremendously increased.

We will have size! To go with our innate nitty gritty, it will be much of a handful to contend with.

Hopefully this time, the Gilas organization realizes this evolution and get on with a more deserving roster, a more competitive one, to hopefully bring the highest honor for flag and country!

No more of the "third place, OK na " mentality... that was a big joke of a vision statement....IMHO.

AVO, reserve a seat, now!

^Can someone clarify if he has a Philippine Passport? Parang there are people saying he doesn't and how will that affect his eligibility.
