Philippines Cadet/Developmental Team

A forum poster once suggested to improve our outside shooting by training specifically for outside shooting. The usual tendency of people in Philippine streetball is to scrap outside shooting for a supposedly "higher-percentage" close-range shot. Sadly, it also translates into Philippine college, amateur, and pro ball.

One bad tendency we Filipinos have is driving it inside for a supposedly higher-percentage close-range shot instead of taking a wide open but supposedly lower percentage jump shot. We must realize by now that distance is not necessarily directly proportional to the shooting percentage. It's rather directly proportional to the amount of space between the shooter and the defender.

That's why when I practice, I prefer shooting long balls than drives.

Look at the Europeans. Doesn't matter if you're a 6-foot guard or a 7-foot center, if you have a shot anywhere within 25 feet, take it, don't drive it through the defenders in the paint. Take the shot while nobody's guarding you.

Modern statistics has shown that shots inside the paint and 3pts shots are the most statistically sound FG attempts. The mid-range game is starting to lose its importance. That is just a sad reality because for me, no matter what the stats say, I see a great deal of importance in honing ones mid-range shot. It adds variety and not overly relying on the long balls.

If you watch the NBA in the 90s, you can clearly see how many attempts they take from 15 to 18 feet. Just ask Michael Jordan. :)

I thank the good Lord those geniuses are not SBP officials.

A mix of Gilas & cadets will do for the next SEA Games.. But we have to consider the availability of the GILAS Players, as SEA Games schedules vary.

Losing in the SEA games (especially by small margins) is not an option.... Remember, this is the only title we have...

On better % , look up true shooting %, the principle is simple if you do the math a player who shoots 35 % from three , essentially is shooting over 50 % (53 % to be exact) from 2 pt FG % . So esentially an uncontested 3 point shot is significantly a better % shot than a contested 15 foot jumpshot.

But then, as dunk_on_me stated, the mid-range shot adds variety, reduces reliance on the 3pt shot, and I would like to add, catch the defense off-guard when the ball handler or the bigman suddenly jump shoots from 15-18 feet instead of driving the ball past bigger defenders or posting up on smaller defenders, respectively.

Many world-class teams right now place the mid-range shot at the bottom of the priority list and is now something reserved for center players whose playing style does not involve shooting threes to break down zone defenses.

As if we have competition in that only title that we have:cool:..

I don't care if we lose that title for the next two years we will have a title as "World Cup" participant for the next 4 years.. and hopefully "Olympians:cool:"

And we still the "real" Sea champions as Seaba is the real ASEAN championship right?

For Thailand and Indonesia

Sea games > playing in FIBA asiad championships

Agree. If sacrificing the SEA gold means faster development in the long run that's a goddamn good trade-off.

But sure, let's celebrate this medal, as a team accustomed to mediocrity (outside of our recent WC run) we're perhaps satisfied with this first placed finish over watered down opponents.

Who again said that Troy is not ready for Gilas 3 yet??

Troy: In your face!!! (Slam dunk x7)

Lololololol

I don't mind our cadets losing that game or lsing to Indonesia later at least we upset Iran, China or anybody to get that Rio spot come September, I'll be solved:cool:

Are you out of your mind!!!!

Please consider the pinoy trolls who keep bragging about
1954 wbc bronze medal and pinoy superiority over Asean teams.

They might shy away from posting on facebook pages of other Asean countries' basketball communities.

They can brag that we are 2015 ahem defending Asian Champions.. No. 1 is asia lol:cool:

Why cant geniuses understand that boys vs men in a physical sport won't work?

SEABA is a qualifying tournament for Fiba Asia championship.
SEA Games is a must win simply because we badly need gold medals as much as possible.

There are tournaments that we can use for development but definitely not the two mentioned.

If we sent our youth team in SEABA and rest sent their best teams, we might end up not qualifying in FIBA asia.
Realistically, our youth team will not be able to beat Thailand and we probably have 50% chance of beating indonesia, malaysia and singapore.

If this happened, goodbye 2015 FIBA and 2016 RIO.

Mabuti na lang we are being led by SBP and not BAP official like Durden Tyler.

LOL

Wow that's a new one. Down with BAP! :D

But i still disagree that we overkill opponents at this level. Would rather go for development-- pure U18 would be ultimately pushing it but a hybrid (U18/Cadets) should do the trick-- and beat Thailand and the likes too.

i am just not for celebrating mediocrity and lusterless gold medals.

Their pro teams are at equal with our Youth Teams. If nothing much is at stake (say we already qualified for a next level tourney), why not push the envelope and see how are kids will fare?

i get it that we still have to qualify for FIBA Asia and that's all there is to this tournament. But what if we're qualified already, wouldn't it be more prudent to go development than go for gold?
