Ginebra has such a monopoly on PBA fans that I could see people talking themselves into investing in a team if they leave.

I think if SMC goes out of the PBA & a No. of companies will replace it, less money would be involved in the league operations as those new companies & the holdover PBA franchises don't have as much financial capabilities as SMC. I see PBA player salaries cut by a significant degree. For instance if a PBA superstar has a monthly salary of 500k, baka maging 400k or less nalang maging monthly salary ng isang PBA superstar. Also, maybe the league will have a shorter season (say 7 or 8 months nalang) & a 2-conference season nalang. And perhaps many more marque players will play in Japan or Korea or Taiwan.

Same sentiments, in a way it creates a level playing field but less money circulating in the league could have dire consequences as well.

wow, really? then I want SMC to quit. i doubt PBA will die. it'll dip hard but it'll eventually bounce back.
if SMC quits, Terrafirma and Northport probably quits as well.

only way PBA actual folds, provided only SMC and the farm teams leave, is they move to a different league. if they leave but everything else more or less is the same, other companies will just buy franchises in the PBA and rebrand the league somehow.

Not that way.. as many said, crispa and Toyota leave the PBA before and many said PBA will die.. but it didn't happened... As long as basketball still the number 1 sport in the Philippines, PBA will never die.. if SMC quits, whoever buys their franchise will be very lucky, since they will hold that legendary franchises... What if SM decides to join and buy SMC franchises in the PBA? SM is the biggest company here in the Philippines, maybe it will be better... They just want fair transparency...

Unless big companies such as SM, Ayala will join.. as long as basketball still the number 1 sport in the Philippines, PBA will exist and many companies will replace those current teams in PBA who want to leave, including MVP or SMC teams...

Without SMC, it would be a water down version of the PBA which means cheaper franchise fee which could attract more companies to join including not so big companies.
I think a water down version of the PBA would still be a good source of national team talents. Maybe maging 7 to 8 months nalang ang PBA season instead of 10 months, which of course would be better for the national team. And maybe it would just be a 2-conference season.

SM is not into basketball. Their NU gig was a business decision and once they got what they wanted, they are no longer funding it like before.
Ayala was never known to be into basketball.
Razon yes but limited to DLSU. Villar No. Tanduay? Bong Tan is dead. Robinsons? UP lang si Robina.
It will probably be guys like Pineda and provincial tycoons who are addicted to basketball. Companies like Chooks and Strong. Not big congolmerates and tycoons. Which might be good because these guys really like basketball.

We will never know.. we are not say that they are not into basketball... As long they are in basketball world, whether is in PBA or college scene, there still have a chance, maybe not now, but in future.. those companies are smart.. they doesn't want to involve any hoologanism in the PBA that will effect on their business... They just want the league is in better situation before they might join... or if SMC or MVP groups leave the league, maybe they will takeover.. basketball is too big here that we are just only depended on either SMC or MVP groups to lead it..

The Purefoods franchise in the late 80's & 90's was owned by the Ayalas, if I'm not mistaken.

If SMC for some weird reason suddenly quits PBA, unless they can hold their players hostage and bring them wherever league they plan to go(including their farm teams), PBA can always reset and go to the dispersal route. I think it will make the league more watchable since teams will be more balance.

yes filipinos love basketball but filipinos don't have the purchasing power to sustain a league, TOYOTA and Crispa left but PBA did not die, yes because that time players with the biggest fan based transferred to other teams and brought their fanbase with them, but now none among the current players has the drawing power of someone like Jawo or even Don Ramon, Ginebra will never have this fanbase if not for Jawo, now it's still has the fanbase because of tradition and the Ginebra name itself, i doubt if in case the team will disband if most of the fanbase will follow the current players wherever they will play, without SMC in order for PBA to survive it should merge with MPBL and make it a regional league

it will just be a slightly better version of MPBL, the only reason why most of the marquee players of SMC teams were not transferring to overseas league is because SMC can somehow match the offers and provide more security of tenure, people here are underestimating the clout of SMC in Philippine basketball, we can go back as far as the Marcos Era foundation na when it comes to basketball in the Philippines ang San Miguel Corporation, not being a homer i am just stating a fact

Correct, and Andres Soriano used to own SMC teams SMB and Ginebra. These ultra rich families used to go the games ( ULTRA) and mingle withe the fans. I remember Andres even went to the bleachers to lead the HEEEEEE-Ne-Braaaa chant

and at the other side the old matriarch of URC also used to bring his only son Lance to the game as well
while Don Andres used to mingle in that masa level called bleachers
unfortunately the next gen of tycoons are not totally fan of the sports

you seem to be underestimating the team owners. they can and will adjust somehow. they are, after all, successful businessmen. SMB has deepest pockets of the lot, but that doesnt mean the other teams cant shell out money if needed. lets be real here, the independent teams are just following what was agreed on. if they remove the salary cap, we will see the independent teams paying almost SMB or MVP salary. i say almost, because they probably will not pay multiple players x amount of money. anything over that, as a fan, do we really want our players to be just in the PBA if some other international league wants them?
dont you want JMF in B league or CBA or other league we feel is better than the PBA? its not as if SMB goes, half of the players of each SMB backed team will go overseas. only a few will be given offers. i dont think that would be detrimental in the long run. half of the current Gilas team plays overseas, and they contribute quite well. they also get to give some of our kababayans extra reason to watch their leagues.and for personal reasons, they earn well and is living proof to fil-foreigners that there are more options getting a Philippine passport and not just the PBA.
