The PBA is a BIR scandal waiting to happen. Imagine the amount of collusion happening between players and teams regarding salaries. Remember when Yeng Guiao asked what is the difference between the max salary of an independent team versus the max salary of teams like San Miguel and TNT?

No scandal there. They just park it as other expenses. Like fringe benefits. Like teams can give players cars but those cars are book as company cars. Purchase and maintenance can be charge to companies.

Pba is just a big tax write off : business expense

nb: the team manager of SMB is the husband of former bir commisioner kim henares (who is a basketball fan as well)

Believe me they rather spend the money creating money generating ventures than spend it in PBA. That's why RSA said that he is doing it because of love the game and people.

so if ramon ang dies and a non-basketball fan takes over, goodbye to the pba?

it might be an MVP dominated league or someone like Strong Group will take over, Basketball is too huge and often times have pseudo political / good PR effects on our society.

I don't think so. Basketball is just too big & popular in the Philippines for the PBA to just die like that just becoz SMC is no longer in the PBA. A lot of companies would be interested in joining the league. Baka nga SMC withdrawing from the PBA would even be good for the league & Phi basketball as well.

If SMC is out of the PBA, it may even pave the way for the league to grow from 12 teams to 16 teams, which of course will be good for the league (pero wag naman masyadong madaming teams as it will have a detrimental effect on the level of competition). Sino ba ang nagba block sa other companies who are interested in buying PBA franchises in the last 8 years or so? Di ba SMC rin? We all know maeaming companies ang gusting bumili ng PBA franchise/team but SMC has been blocking it.

League might die if smc decides to quit. MVP money alone cant keep the PBA afloat

and no other group/tycoon has the same financial resources or is willing to pour that much money on basketball

Nope... Many companies are willing to join the PBA.. if SMC leaves, companies like Chooks, Tanduay, SGA, etc, will join.. remember we are basketball country and until Filipinos love basketball, the PBA still alive.. remember this is the issue before where Crispa and Toyota leaved the PBA, many said PBA will die when Toyota and crispa leaves, but it didn't happened.. As long Filipinos love basketball, PBA will still exist...

i doubt they have the same deep pockets like smc

yes they are tycoons but i doubt they can outspend smc, league’s gonna experience a downgrade, well atleast no more bonuses and perks beyond the salary cap

Those companies are willing to pay same what SMC does... Tanduay is very capable to pay multi million pesos to the players since they are big company too.. SGA is another company that can pay big too, they can hire big name NBA players such as Odom, Howard, Robertson, etc... The Zamboanga Valientes team who recruited DeMarcus Cousin is also capable to spend big in the PBA if they given a chance... Same also said with Chooks to Go.. the reason they are not joining because of hoologanism of the league that discourage companies to join the league.. remember what Tanduay owner said before!! "PBA is a SMC league"... They just want a healthy competition... How the PBA will encourage those companies to join if farm teams exists? Sister teams are ok as long they are willing to compete, but farm teams are not acceptable to the public...

OKAY.

First off, Chooks isnt active in basketball anymore since they scrapped their 3x3 league after having issues with guess whom? the PBA.

Second, Tanduay HAS the resources but i DOUBT they will be joining since they are focusing now on the export market (NBA sponsorships). Batangas MPBL team only exist because they have a subsidiary and an alcohol facility located in Batangas.

and lastly, SGA has already ties with Converge.

Problem with tanduay, they are no longer pouring that much money on sports after bong tan’s death.

Or maybe they distrust how PBA runs nowadays? Tanduay still active in basketball operations here, SGA have ties with converge but they are not direct sister companies.. if those companies who running the line up of Blackwater, terrafirma or Northport, for sure they have a chance to be a title contenders... Even before some rumors BDO wants to join the PBA (they already competing with the D league before), those companies still want to be part of PBA, but what they want is fair competitiveness.. Parity is very impossible but atleast fair treatment to all of participants is what they want..

Sponsoring or spending for a pocket tournament is entirely different than running a basketball operation for an entire year, these groups might be able to spend on getting ex nba stars for a 2 week tournament, but they will shell out more in a PBA setup

How about Zamboanga Valientes? Who is the main sponsor of that team?

Team is owned by the LGU and local Zamboanga businessmen i doubt they could sustain funding a year long basketball operations

somehow i agree with zairex, cant discredit Ramon Ang’e passion, no other omega/ S level tycoon can match the pockets and basketball passion of SMC and MPIC

Bong Tan (RIP) was the closest , Mascarinas already dried up his resources, while SGA and Pineda are now experiencing the difficulties of financing a pba team

yep PBA might survive but no more astronomical bonuses and we could see the exodus of top stars for foreign leagues should Ramon Ang calls it quits

I remember Universal Canning Inc. (Familys Brand, Master Sardines, Master Tuna, Atami & Mikado Sardines.) were one of the interested parties that were serious in acquiring the Alaska PBA franchise when it was put up for sale back then. And I believe the company has been active in sponsoring Zamboanga based basketball teams in various commercial leagues (MPBL, CTG 3x3, FilBasket).
