Philippine PBA Trades, Releases, Sign-ups, Rumours (vol. III)

Building from this point, many PBA teams have holes as of now. Here's my personal assessment of the current teams:

Ginebra: Needs a go-to guy, complete in all positions when healthy and with Brownlee; maybe need a third center
MERALCO: Needs a go-to guy, size at center (have both in Lofton and Ibeh)
Magnolia: Needs a go-to-guy and depth at center
Blackwater: Needs size at center, and maybe a PF/C as well
TNT: Needs an imposing presence at center, even when healthy
Converge: Needs size at wing and depth at the bigman positions; lineup is too small
RoS: Needs a go-to guy and maybe a wing as insurance for Gabe
SMB: Needs defensive wing depth and a four who can reasonably defend; very overpowered on offense, but there are holes in the roster
Phoenix: Needs size and rim protection at center and a go-to guy
TerraFirma: Needs a reliable guard, and maybe another wing
NLEX: Needs size and rim protection at center
NorthPort: Needs depth at center so that Calma and Flores don't struggle as much

So from here, a lot of PBA teams have holes to fill. This builds from my original point that many all-Filipino teams are incomplete. Some need more than one import. At the very least, have a permanent spot for either one FSA or tenured import (maybe someone who has already played in 3 or more conferences), and then have him take one of the import spots in 2-import conferences.

I'm kind of with sir JAMSKIE that we need to expand if we're to have a 2-import system so that more locals can play.

The problem now with expansion is that there will be more games for the PBA teams. If we expand to 16 teams, that's 54 more elimination games per conference. The PBA would have 120 games (15 games per team), up from 66 elimination games per conference (11 games per team). Now we really have to cut the number of conference if the PBA wants to aid Gilas and be the "bida." We cannot keep up the 3-conference schedule in its current form if we expand.

the PBA can solve this problem by………dividing the field into 2 groups, single round robin, top 4 per group enters the playoffs (3-5-7).

each team plays a minimum of 7 games, maximum
of 21 games for the entire conference.

I actually have the idea that the PBA should just have Commissioner's and Governor's for the regular year, and relegate the All-Filipino to an offseason/preseason tournament of the top 8 from the Commissioner's and Governors'. All-Filipino could just be a super-cup of sorts. Straight to playoffs, which the PBA cares about.

I posted this idea on the All-Filipino in social media. I did meet a pushback from a poster, saying that we can't dilute the All-Filipino, since it's the most prestigious. I personally think that prestige is a load of bull. Better prestige would be getting an EASL trophy, since it establishes basketball pedigree in the region.

sucks that the All Filipino Cup is romanticized, its actually the symbol of mediocrity and insular minded of the Filipinos rooted on false sense of national pride

It's all just tradition nowadays that old PBA fans doesn't want to let go of. But to humor them, if it were up to me, I'd go with a hybrid AFC X Invitational, 3-week long, all-local/national tournament, where 4 non-PH teams, whether they are NT or pro club, will be invited to compete against PBA teams. I'll have the tournament format set similar to a FIBA world or continental cup (16 teams to start with, 4 groups of 4, 3 preliminary games each team, QF, SF, and Final, or something similar), schedule it either during July or September of every year. Since the idea is to showcase how great all-local PH basketball is, i think my suggestion wouldn't hurt that much and instead, help raise the entirety of PBA's reputation in the international scene, not just the EASL representatives.

I think they can change the format of one of their conferences to fit to the schedule.

Let's say they expand to 16 PBA Teams.

1st Conference - Philippine Cup

Divide the 16 teams into 4 groups based on their standing from previous season.
GROUP 1 will be play in Luzon for Luzon Cup,
GROUP 2 will play in Visayas for Visayas Cup,
GROUP 3 will play in Mindanao for Mindanao Cup and
GROUP 4 will play in NCR for NCR Cup.

All games per Cup will be play simultaneously with each other.

Each team will face the teams on their group twice with a total 6 games per team in elimination and top 2 teams will compete for the Cup Trophy.
All winners of Cup Trophy will then advance to National Championship. Matches pairing will be determine via draw and will play Best-of-3 Semis and the winners will advance National Finals and play a Best-of-five Finals.

2nd Conference - Commissioner's Cup
16 teams will be divided into 2 groups, each group will consist of 8 teams.
Teams on the same group will face twice and once to the teams from another group. That will be 22 elimination games.
Top 8 will advance to regular playoffs.

3rd Conference - Fiesta Conference
In this Conference, the league will invite 4 international teams or local clubs (Pampanga Lantern, Nueva Ecija Vanguards, etc.) to up the number of teams to 20 teams.
Teams will be then group again to 4 consisting of 4 PBA Teams plus 1 invited club.

In each group, teams will play single round robin and top 2 teams will advance to a PCCL tournament format.

I think this is the best possible format if expansion happens.

Why not introduce an In-Season type of tournament wherein they could put the All-Filipino Cup in that format and at the same time re-implement again the 2 import policy by combining the Commisioner Cup and the Governors Cup format instead furthermore teams who are participating in the EASL are mandated to parade 2 imports during playday and as a way of building cohesion and familiarity along the way, besides to avoid the impression from the basketball loving public that the PBA’s only intention at EASL is to participate and not to compete. The bottomline here is to have a new innovation to entice the public to re-ignite interest to the dying league.

Now there’s an old statement released by the Bicolanong Chualay about that re-introducing a 2 import policy may eventually deprived other local players a chance to had a spot and playing time, well, if the plan of expanding the league starting next year(?), then issues like that may not affect other locals to strut their wares moving forward.

The IST is the EASL tournament already. I think they need to follow the format by Com. Noli implemented in 2004-2010.

1st conference, that's kinda feasible, with only 48 elimination games. We need more broadcasters, though.

3rd conference, good short elimination tournament, with only 40 games.

2nd conference being a main event is kind of a good idea too, better if with 2 imports. Length of season might be a bit of an issue. That's 176 total elimination games.

1st & 3rd is feasible. already do a calendar chart, both tournaments can only last for 1 month. as long as 4 games will be played in a gameday. 2 games will be televised and the other 2 games will be available online.

And for the 2nd, yes that will be too long if that format will be implemented, so to shorten the tournament period, they can do a single round robin which every team will play single round robin. that will be 120 elimination games where 8 games per week should be play to make it at least 3.75months for elims and 1.5 months for playoffs.

All in all, the PBA will run for 7 months. that will be 3 months shorter to the current setup of the PBA.

I think a better format would be a league-cup format running simultaneously (along with the EASL), and a supercup in August or after a FIBA tournament to start the season.

League would be double or triple round robin (so long as it doesn't exceed 40 or 50), while cup would start in November, December in a single round robin group stage. Supercup consists of top 8 teams in the league (or top 4 for league and cup), then straight to playoffs.

Sir, I had no qualms about Com. Noli's format during his time but time pass by the PBA must conduct some innovation to make the league more enticing to the public aside from that news on expansion, as I mentioned that In-Season format is quite interesting, I hope they could twist something that is beneficial to the league but also to our campaign on both Gilas and EASL moving forward.

For me personally, I preferred a single round format to make sure all teams are always on their toe and to make sure campaign at Gilas and EASL may not compromise.

that's my take

I think if the PBA will expand to 16 teams, 2 conferences is enough with an in conference tournament,

Conference with import will be double round robin (30 games) but separate 16 teams into 2 groups.

Then teams in the same group , ( 7 games) will be treated as games for in conference tournament at the same time included in the conference standing.

Then top four team each group will go over with KO in QF, SF and Finals.

Games from QF to Finals is not included in the conference standing.

Grandslam is still alive with 2 conference format plus an in conference tournament

For the PBA to have an In-Season Tournament doesn't make sense. They already playing in EASL and FIBA also have the Champions Cup. Those tournaments are already the same with the NBA IST. And I think, EASL and FIBA Asia Champions Cup are much prestigious than the NBA IST, because they will call you the "the best ball club of the East Asia" for winning the EASL or the best club team in Asia by winning the FIBA Asia Champions Cup.

IF the PBA want to do team expansion current tournament format will affect the National team. We already know that the PBA want to stick with 3-Conference Format, but they need to tweak those conferences to accommodate the expansion.

With current format, they play a single round robin, so if PBA won't tweak the format and follow the old, it will take 4 months to finish the elimination round, so meaning for it needed a year just to finish the elimination round for the 3 conferences.
