Actually, I will stick to what I had replied to you weeks ago.

AFC as pre-season tournament
Season proper
Invitationals as off-season tournament

If you still asking about the stakes of this, take away the name of PBA for both AFC and invitationals, just like how Japan has Tohoku Cup and Emperor's Cup organized by B.League and JABBA.

Make the AFC a mid-season, 2 week tournament, do or die / knock out games. games everyday. Problem is for a 12 team league that is the PBA, you need to invite 4 more teams to make it 16. I suggest 4 of the strongest MBPL / FilBasket / Vis-Min teams be included. Divide the field into 2 brackets with 1st seed vs 8 seed, 2 vs 7, etc on 1 bracket, and the same on the other. Winner takes the AF Cup.

BTW, Emperor's Cup is mid-season. Same as other cup tournament in Europe. Pre-season tournament seems "hollow" but that's just my opinion.

What are your suggestions to make PBA attractive to people again and make people watch live?

For me, study how successful leagues from other countries does it. We don't have to reinvent anything. First off, I think all of them have teams that are city-representatives.

Just have the current teams adopt a city/province like "Manila Drinkers - San Miguel Beer." As of now having venues in different cities is not feasible so just keep having it at the same venues, with games in Visayas and Mindanao once in a while for special games. Metro Manila has a lot of 'transplant' population whose family originally came from other provinces, and continuous tourists from other provinces. I think worst case scenario is the attendance will be the same. But if they play their cards right, attendance should see a boost because loyalty to a province should be better than loyalty to a business product.

We are so tribal and it boggles the mind why we are not tapping into that.

Just on merchandise alone...why would I wear something that says 'Purefoods Tender Juicy Hotdogs?" If I'm Kapampangan and it says Pampanga Hotdogs then I actually might want to have that shirt.

Start small in regionalizing the PBA. Put 1/2 of the league in Cebu ( I heard SM is building an arena there that rivals MOA) ... call it PBA South. That alone, will spark interests and creates instant rivalry with those Manila / Luzon based teams. Pero siempre, MVP and SMC should put one or 2 of their most popular teams there. Ginebra in Cebu will make the move more legit. Instant fandom.

Province-based teams with home and away games should eventually really be the goal. Lots of problems logistically though, maybe when our country has better infrastructure/economy. My proposal does not require a lot, it's basically just a name change. Over time though, hopefully the loyalty builds until we eventually really go full home and away.

"I still don't get how a preseason is better than actual conference when their is stakes involve."

- The fans as well as other teams will have a glimpse of each other after the off-season. This is their opening salvo against each other. The objective is to make a statement ahead of the season. This is the stake that I am talking about.

"Again shortening the season will lessen the income of teams."

- Again, you will make your season proper longer - double or triple round round robin with longer playoffs. As you said, more games, more income. The league just needs to be creative.

"How will you compensate for that."

- Double (22 games) or Triple (33 games) round robin eliminations
- 5-7-7 playoffs
- More on the road games (and even more during playoffs)
- Put the game dates one during Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and Mondays, when most people are don't have work or class.

You see how low attendance in elimination round. It will cost more. So logically it will reduce any sales and increase the cost.

How is this better?

No, I haven't. I'm a history graduate and law student, and no inherited businesses.

Pero kasi, that's their job, they assumed the risk of expenses. Find ways to attract customers and to turn a profit.

Ita easy for us to say about risk because we don't spend 200M or more to run a PBA team.
PBA is not earning but a cost or expense for companies. We will asked them to spend more but no guarantee on higher live attendance. How sure are you again that fans will be troping to venues.

I really do believe that the only way for the PBA to survive is to bring back the interest of its fan base. Let's take the UAAP for example, you see people coming in to watch volleyball and basketball regardless of whether games are on weekdays or weekends. Heck even with the less popular teams playing they are able to draw more people as compared to Terrafirma, Blackwater or even Converge/Alaska.

The PBA really shot themselves in the foot when they allowed the SMC and MVP teams to take hold of the reins and now the league is reduced to a pissing contest between the two. Of course people will lose interest when its only those 3 teams (Ginebra, San Miguel and TNT) that are always fighting for the championships. It has come to a point where elimination games feels like they are just being played out of formality and the real games only start during the semifinals. You could even see it in the player's body language, they dont put in even half the effort as to what we see in the collegiate level. Its like the "other" teams are just going through the motions knowing too well that they dont stand a chance against the big money teams. And the idiots running the PBA expect the fans to be okay with it.

I agree with you, just like why Apple, BMW, and other high-cost consumer goods are profitable. Perception and Integrity is a big factor, even at a premium, consumers will still buy them. PBA should regain that by following its own rules and pronouncements. If they can't follow salary caps, if teams and players want to pay and get paid and no more trade restrictions then turn into a Euro league style rules o B.League. You can innovate on formats, playing venues, eligibilities, if they can get their integrity back. Even they are the highest form of basketball in Philippines if they don't have integrity, it won't matter.

unlike the PBA, the UAAP has a automatic fanbase in its students (plus their family), alumni, faculty and staff.

Well said bro. Elimination round has just become a formality na lang talaga. And we are like foolish watching those games as if teams like NLEX, Northport, Blackwater, Peraperma, Converge, Phoenix, have good chances making it to the finals.

That is why when Rain or Shine routed Ginebra about 2 weeks ago, I can't help but have this feeling ROS may have routed Ginebra early in the eliminations but in the long run, Ginebra would make it to the finals while ROS would even struggle making it to the quarterfinals.

You missed what I've said. They need more road games - more games outside Metro Manila.

I think, you are just looking at the gate attendance of Metro Manila venues. Bring it to the province, it will be sold out, whether it is pandemic or not, whether or not there is an inflation.

Both of you guys missed something - UAAP has a built-in fanbase. They have students, faculties, and alumni of each schools as their fans. UAAP will never run out of fans. PBA can.

True the dynamics of UAAP and even the US NCAA are different from professional leagues. We are talking about what can PBA to improve its reputation hence having more funs in the seats.

Even with so many scandals in US NCAA, they continue to get support because of affinity more than the actual game.

First, the reason it can't do more road games is the same reason why MBA, MBPL, FilBasket, etc, are not doing home and away games. And the prices of tickets are higher in PBA than in the other leagues. It might be sold out in one game but having multiple games, might not be sustainable. Even MBPL doesn't sell out every game, what more if it's a higher ticket price? Besides the LGU helps with the cost but can't sustain it for a longer period. You don't want local politics involved.

Tama yun idea, the mediocre team the farm teams have them adopt a province/home court.. pba cannot get an equal home and away for all teams(lfinancially draining and just adapt the mpbl format if tehre is one) but since this teams have more home games it negates the manpower advantage this elite teams have and yes the provincial teams will support their team no matter what
