in other news, though its from Sayson

The Road Warriors franchise is for sale, multiple sources told SPIN.ph.

"That's the plan," said a person with knowledge of the situation who refused to be identified due to the sensitivity of the issue. He even used the dreaded "F" word and laid bare the challenges that a farm team faces when its top assets are traded and its best player is allowed to flee to Japan.

This guy's debunking the article and dissing Homer's credibility: https://twitter.com/ByTimReynolds/status/1569049909243908097?s=20&t=M5oREhKo0dTTF4YiQxsj_w

Apart from his good Gilas takes last month, Homer's not that credible. I mean, he doubted Brownlee's ability to carry Ginebra, and he blocked fans who called him out on it.

So, the EASL will now take the form of the continental championship for now. That, like all continental championships, is reserved for top teams in each league.

Instead of a three or two-conference format, I think the league should instead institute a league-cup competition, so as to give PBA teams a chance to win a domestic double.

If it was up to me, I'd like for this to replace the Philippine Cup yet closely emulate the FIBA competition, wherein it would still be an all-local tournament but with guest teams from other Asian domestic leagues. Heck, I'd even invite the champions from PHL minor pro leagues, too, just to keep close to the football cup tournament's essence and to also bring it a 20 or 24-team field. The big challenge with such endeavor would be the schedule though, as most Asian pro leagues are FIBA calendar-aligned, unlike PBA na may sariling mundo and doesn't seem to care about its neighbor leagues.

I think it would be nice if the PBA would emulate the 2 division format used by the European leagues and the B league. I think having a division 2 or B (lower tier) would address the need for expansion and generate more jobs for players and coaches. They could also implement a rewards system of sorts by having the finalists or the champion in the lower division compete in at least the All Filipino/Phil Cup, because a demotion/promotion system would be blocked vehemently by the big money teams to protect their farm teams. But this would in turn force the hand of the farm teams to maintain a competitive line up to avoid the disgrace of losing to lower tier teams.

Sir Rick its a good idea but will pba get out of their Manila elite/polo club menatlity where they just welcome individuals who can shell 100 million to be in this "elite club"

Its more than 200 million a year. More for top teams. If you cant compete what will you be. Try to calculate how will a compny with only millions in sale compete against SMC and MVP groups

that's the thing with PBA - one team = one owner. it's better to have a team with multiple owners than the "one team, one owner" set-up. i think that NBA and NBL has this kind of set-up - there is a majority/controlling ownership and there is a minority ownership.

If I am not mistaken, Meralco is owned by several companies. JG SUMMIT HOLDINGS, INC., FIRST PHILIPPINE HOLDINGS CORPORATION and Metro pacific

but who owns its PBA team? it's MVP, not JG.

here's the main shareholders of Meralco

Beacon Electric Asset Holdings, Inc.: 34.96%
JG Summit Holdings, Inc.: 29.56%
Others/Public stock: 21%
Metro Pacific Investments Corporation: 10.5%
First Philippine Holdings Corporation: 3.94%
First Philippine Utilities Corporation: 0.01%

beacon and MPIC are under the Salim/MVP umbrella

league wont die if they know how to develop superstars and they could actually earn from players going abroad through contract buyouts. A departing superstar opens opportunities for others to step up. and with the right marketing, the PBA could make them household names

It MVP has the majority shareholders, just like NBA teams with majority shareholders.

MVP is not the majority owner of MERALCO. MPIC and Beacon only owns a total of 45.46%. Regardless, MERALCO's affairs in the PBA are basically only those of MVP's.

They can't pull the plug of MVP's actions in the PBA. MERALCO can decide to pull the plug but the franchise still belongs to MPIC. They can change the name of the team to other companies owned or controlled by them (e.g. Cignal, PLDT).

If only JG could rally the remaining 54% to withdraw the franchise or control the franchise's actions, but looks like the rest of the shareholders couldn't care less about the basketball team

To summarize:

Meralco, the electric company is owned by multiple share holders

Meralco, the basketball team is owned by MVP
