Philippine PBA Trades, Releases, Sign-ups, Rumours (vol. III)

Yeah, there's a loophole in the Gilas draft rules, that's why (in my opinion) Heading could legally sign with a Taiwanese team. The PBA wouldn't want to set that as a precedent.

But with the stupid rules the PBA has been making, this bad faith could be karma. HAHAHAHAHAHA.

Gilas is not a ballclub but a national team. Terrafirma only holds the rights over Heading. Technically, he is not signed with ballclubs. That basically makes him a free agent. I believe that this is the loophole that Taichung and Heading exploited.

In addition, the only conditions I know of is that the Gilas draftees can't play in the PBA as long as the Gilas contracts are running, but the teams hold their rights. No condition precluding the players from signing contracts with overseas teams.

This talk on superteams got me thinking on how the top teams win their championships. Do they win through advancement in tactics, or just sheer talent? You can win through advancement in tactics, but you need talent to sustain it.

I think, and I think a lot of you may agree, that wins through advancement in tactics are better for Philippine basketball than winning through just getting talent, like how SMB won theirs. That's why I think this TNT-Mags series is a breath of fresh air, kasi both Victolero and Chot are good tacticians, with both finding common ground on defense. TNT just had an edge in firepower, especially with Mikey Williams.

At this point, the championships are still won mainly through sheer talent as evidenced by the combined number of championships won by SMC teams which were not too long ago, and with TNT's championship team last conference not being a slack lineup itself. But i'll also give credit to Coach Chot for successfully reinserting his old system with Jason Castro and Kelly Williams still present. Without those 2, I don't think TNT would have gone all the way.

The indie teams are trying to win tactically, but gets hurdled a lot, no thanks to the farm teams.

I believe that the indie trio of Alaska, ROS and Phoenix will surprise us.

true. looking at alaska i think they made a bad decision letting go of banal without getting anyting like a pick. but alaska looked really good. i do hope they get to draft some bigs. i wonder how many picks does the trio has in the next draft. i think next draft there will be lots of good quality filams.

they are looking good at the bigman position with Taha, Brondial, Adamos, and Tratter. The wingman and two-guard rotations are pretty solid as well with Herndorn, Teng, Stockton, DiGregorio, and Racal. I don't know but there is something missing with Alaska.

this. i agree banal wasn't the type of player to be a franchise player. although herndon has that potential.but they need to add someone who will become their franchise player. at this point teng is surely not a go-to guy.he is a good role player to alaska.

Speaking of this issue with Jordan Heading, i think this won't really be much of a hassle if not because of the quarantine protocols. But then again, what if he gets severely injured while with his P. LEAGUE+ team? I think his PBA motherclub should get compensated.

not P.LEAGUE+ but T1 League. Asians can only play in P+ as world imports.

I stand corrected, thanks bro. Furthermore, to avoid such ruckus in the future, PBA and other Asian leagues should be working with each other now to establish an organized system of player loaning, even if it's only a one-sided arrangement. If money is involved, then so be it.

Alaska and RoS need true go-to guys, apart from their imports, in order for them to get to contender status. They can draft a go-to guy or trade some assets to get one.

PBA would be better off adopting similar competition format/calendar used by top European football leagues.

1. Regular season + 3 rounds of playoffs (with imports) - from 2nd week of October to 4th week of April. Will run concurrently with the EASL season.
2. PBA/SBP/All-Local Invitational Cup (all-local) - from 2nd to 4th week of May.
3. PBA Super Cup (with imports) - will be contested by semifinalist or next-best finishers from the first 2 tournaments, from 2nd to 4th week of June. Finalists of this tournament will qualify to next season's EASL tournament.
4. Off-season months during last week of June to 3rd week of September. Annual draft and training/rookie camp will also be held within this period. Both events especially the training/rookie camp should be televised.
5. Televised pre-season games from late-September to early-October.
6. New season on 2nd week of October.

4 possible titles and an almost all-year round television exposure by PBA and its clubs. This is my dream for PBA.

This could be an interesting format for the PBA. They keep the number of games and can still make some money off the fans while keeping the level of competition good, and be FIBA-friendly as well.

I just hope that in your proposed with import tournaments, they don't impose a height limit.

Yeah, I still think that the PBA would still keep the same number of games (elims and playoffs) with this kind of format, same as when the PBA first ran a 3-conference format. In addition, there would still be room for the EASL, which would bring more money for the PBA. Also, having the whole season with imports run concurrently with the EASL will help teams build chemistry better for both PBA and EASL.

I hope the PBA seriously considers this idea. Times are changing, e.

right now RoS is grooming nambatac as their go-to guy but to be honest i dont see nambatac has that it factor to become a go-to guy. but i do hope they can get one in the next draft.

Nambatac shoots too low a percentage, and is too inconsistent to be a reliable go-to guy. He's a spark plug or a support scorer at best. I have a similar issue with Mocon, although he could create for himself as well.

Yeah, RoS should get one in the next draft. With the Fil-for restrictions being relaxed, and the limit increased, they can go for one of them as the future go-to guy.

Gilas management should play their players in the PBA as a guest team, so that they will not do this.. I guess Tab didn't want play their players to PBA due to previous reasons.. Sana di nya dinamay yung issue nya on the players.. Those players deserve to play regularly.. sayang oras eh... Ang tagal ng bakante ng cadets natin.. I know PBA's rules and FIBA are different, but this is still basketball.. competitiveness is still there... playing against imports will benefit them.. I will definitely mad at Gilas management if they will not join other pocket tournaments next year.. time is running and 2023 WC is fast approaching.. tapos sisihan to the max pag months nalang before WC nalang sila mag practice..

Gilas players already playing... in B.League hahaha.

No need to play in PBA, just bad habits, will be bullied by vets and international-style does not translate.

because Gilas draft is a sham. PBA teams who drafted them were paying CBC, Van Opstal, etc. their batch right? But the recent one with Heading, Navarro, Rangel, Tungcab only SBP (practically Metropacific group) is paying?

Well, for as long as it benefits the national team, I'm very fine with it. I don't care much about how the Gilas draft affects the PBA, to be honest.

Gilas draftees Isaac Go, Jordan Heading & William Navarro have been serviceable for the national team.

I mean the Gilas cadets back home, likes of Go, Kouame, Navarro, etc... (especially those from PBA draftees)...

Those guys will just try their luck in other leagues besides B. League.

The Ateneo men's basketball team is basically becoming a farm team to produce international quality players.

Go, Kouame, Navarro, and even non-Ateneans like Tamayo or Balti already meet the minimum skillset to be considered by foreign clubs.

Makes sense tbh. If I was a local 6'5 swingman, I wouldn't waste my time in the PBA unless I get to play my true position in any MVP-backed team.
