Philippine PBA Trades, Releases, Sign-ups, Rumours (vol. III)

If only Anthony Semerad was eligible for Gilas, he's an ideal 3 and D player

Semerad got me thinking about how the small ball 4 has become more common for PBA teams. And a great majority are good-sized for the position already. And all of them can play the 3 and play or guard the perimeter.

NLEX - 6'4" Semerad, 6'5" Oftana
TerraFirma - 6'5" Cahilig, 6'5" Adams (although he usually plays the 3)
NorthPort - 6'4" Arwind, 6'5" Ferrer, 6'6" Malonzo
Ginebra - 6'3" Mariano, 6'4" Dillinger, 6'5" Tolentino
Magnolia - 6'2" Abueva, 6'5" Dionisio
MERALCO - 6'4" Hodge (he used to play SF earlier in his career)
TNT - 6'4" Khobuntin
Phoenix - 6'4" Anthony, 6'5" Manganti, hopefully 6'5" Camacho
RoS - 6'2" Mocon, 6'4" Santillan, 6'4" Borboran

Hopefully, more 6'4"-6'5" guys come in, and they play the small-ball 4. Eventually, hopefully these guys then get moved to the 3.

Hopefully, the addition of guys like Lawrence Domingo and Caelan Tiongson help this trend. Both look like they can play both forward positions.

This could be an interesting format for the PBA. They keep the number of games and can still make some money off the fans while keeping the level of competition good, and be FIBA-friendly as well.

I just hope that in your proposed with import tournaments, they don't impose a height limit.

How do they make money? they need fans in the stadium to pay for tickets. Fans now don't go to stadiums regularly. They couldn't fill up the arena unless Ginebra or classic games.

How do we define small ball 4? As long as he can shoot the ball from perimeter?

Not exactly. As long as he can play the SF position, pwede naman small-ball 4. At least in my book.

So Domingo is kinda like Hodge, so to speak. But he looks like he has the handles of a perimeter player. Shooting lang ang kulang. Kinda like someone like Javonte Green, who's played 4 for the Bulls and has had a history of difficulty of shooting (although I think he's shot well from 3 this NBA season), but still a small-ball 4.

Even before the pandemic, attendance was low due to lack of fan interest in the Metro. Kahit nga Ginebra games, hindi kumpleto ang attendance.

Question talaga is marketing. How do you make the league, and the other 11 teams, appealing to the fans?

Exactly pre-pandemic 5K average fans in a 20K capacity arena. If I am not mistaken, revenue from TV ads goes to TV5. I just don't know about revenues from YT or Facebook.

How can these teams get more appeal to the fans when they were named after a poultry product, prepaid sim, a toll way and a perfume? Well, while we can actually say that PBA used to be popular with teams such as Toyota, Crispa, Magnolia, SMB and Ginebra but these teams are followed because of certain personalities. Teams like Shell and Pop Cola/Sunkist had a huge following - thanks to the guys like Benjie Paras, Ronnie Magsanoc and Vergel Meneses. However, as soon as these players left there teams, the popularity of these teams waned.

For me, what PBA should address is their member teams' fanbases.

Well in the defense of PBA monickers, NBA has Heat, Nets which I don't know exactly what they are. B. League has, Happinets, Tokyo Z Friends.

Great points bro. Perhaps the only PBA team that remains very popular despite the departure of certain personalities who are very much identified with the team (Sonny Jaworski of course the most popular figure of the team of all time) is Ginebra.

"NBA has Heat, Nets which I don't know exactly what they are"

- ?????

"B. League has, Happinets, Tokyo Z Friends."

- That's Earth Friends Z. Japanese basketball teams are known to name their teams some weird but catchy-to-the-ears monickers. Even teams in KBL have weird by catchy monickers.

BTW, monickers are not the point here. i thought we are talking about how the viewership of PBA is slowly dwindling. one of the reasons why PBA-model is unstable is because of how teams are formed. product-based team has no sense of attachment to the fans compared to a city-based or school-based team.

if I were to chose to watch a game between TNT (the team I currently follow in the PBA) and Adamson (the school where I came from), ofcourse I will choose to watch the latter because I am an alumnus there. Sense of belongingness is important.

other less popular teams should try to make their teams provincial-based kahit calabarzon or central luzon-based teams sila.

More out-of-town games say, around 40% of total elimination games even if it's probably going to cost more in logistics and boarding? Provinces' (those considerably distant from the NCR) qualified venues sure are smaller in capacity compared to NCR's, thus can be easily filled up if ticket prices are reasonable enough. Having those venues jampacked and very loud on TV every out-of-town gameday can create the illusion that PBA is again becoming an exciting league. When the hype's on again, I think that is when PBA marketing people should start focusing and channeling their energy on to come up with new gimmicks to create more public interest, or at least find a way to revive the rivalry aspect not just between opposing teams, but also on players and coaches.

they can fill up a provincial arena of 2,000-5,000 seating capacity. imo, they not should expect people from metro manila to fill MOA and the Big Dome and watch every games. that's 16,000 to 20,000 seating capacity. that's too much to ask, tbh.

Yeah, reaching out to the fans is important. Jawo took a lot of time for the fans. I don't see many PBA teams trying to expand their fanbase.

As to the monickers, OK lang naman siguro ang products as an influence. I mean, the name for the Bulls was partly because Chicago had a meatpacking industry.

But I digress. Basta, connection with the fans is important. I see more of that in the UAAP and NCAA than in the PBA. I remember when the UP team went around during the 2018 Lantern Parade, and I was able to take pictures with Bright, Javi, Jun Manzo, and Diego Dario, and I assume other fans took pictures too. Point is, they connected with the fans with that, and other stuff too.

Another thing. Changing the system, how it is run, that would help too. Ample cooperation during FIBA tournaments, and some transparency on trades. I mean, teams are free to be stupid, but we'll need to have a basis for balanced trades.

plus merchandise

sell some shirts, jerseys, cap, towel, mask, fan.. include it in 100 m per season.. PBA didnt capitalize that during the pandemic.. promotion of the games like how nbl, b-league does.. social media activity is not the same as those said leagues..

PBA used to have collectible cards of players. As to shirts, I even bought the shirt of Jason Castro when me and my father (a Ginebra fan) watched the game some years ago. what happened to these kinds of stuffs?

Sad that counterfeit jerseys of PBA players/teams (and Gilas) are worn by Pinoys around the country, PBA could have marketed jerseys and other merchandise at a competitive price, and to think the league is very strict regarding their intellectual property.

they could learn from the UAAP/NCAA and Universidad (the apparel company), they sell original UAAP jerseys at a very low price (around 300-500 pesos) and other items such as lanyards, jackets etc

edit: I use to collect those PBA cards released by Upper Deck back in the late 90s-early 2000s

Also the league should revert to classic jersey designs, it has become too cartoonish. I prefer the old SMB, Alaska jerseys coz its more relatable. The design should be kept simple and just show the main brand logo. The current ones are just too exaggerated and ugly IMO.

I see your point. Actually, most leagues are like that - they just put the brand logo of their team or sponsor. that's why TNT used to have to a good-looking jersey.

Northport, so far, has the nicest looking jersey out there.
