Philippine PBA Trades, Releases, Sign-ups, Rumours (vol. III)

we cannot do anything about it as the brilliant wheel-and-dealing trades made by Noli Eala netted legally said prize picks for Petron as they want to make sure they are in a good position to draft their prized Amateur San Miguel recruits Chris Banchero and JuneMar Fajardo plus other probable high picks Hodge, Ellis, Greg Slaughter, Stanley Pringle, Vic Manuel, JR Buensuceso, Keith Jensen, Kevin Alas, Ronald Pascual, Ian Sangalang, Dave Marcelo, etc. Eala made sound judgements that is beneficially business-wise for Petron. If they stacked-up talents who'll end-up as benchwarmers could seem to be morally wrong but Eala had to do what he had to do as it is his job to make the San Miguel teams have the edge over the rest. The problem is if other teams are not really serious in keeping a competitive team and are so willing to be act as a farm team in developing players for other teams or are willing in helping other teams to get-around setted restrictions and be able to grab more quality players. But that's life .... business is business.

Yes, I understand, but having a 9-10 man deep line-up, IMO, is very much okay.
Its unfair to some of their previously drafted good rookies, just waiting in their bench to finally given enough playing time to strut their wares on the hardcourt. And some just ended being traded.

PBA: Petron claims Arboleda off waivers, trades him to Air21 for Duncil
June 7, 2012 6:45pm

The Air21 Express finally got their man, albeit in a round-about way.

The Express dealt guard Jojo Duncil to the Petron Blaze Boosters in exchange for Wynne Arboleda, after the reigning Governors' Cup champs acquired him off waivers earlier in the week.

PBA commissioner Chito Salud approved the swap Thursday, the official PBA website announced.

Arboleda had been granted an unconditional release by his former team, the Barako Bull Energy, which allowed Petron to swoop in and sign the heady point guard.

Because the Air21 and Barako Bull franchises are both owned by the Lina Group of Companies, the two clubs were prevented by PBA rules from trading directly with each other.

Instead of finding a third party to course the trade through though, Barako Bull instead waived Arboleda, with Air21 hoping to negotiate a deal with whichever team landed him, which is exactly what happened.

Arboleda figured in two contests with the Energy this conference before cutting ties with that team, averaging 4.5 points, 3.5 rebounds, 5.5 assists and 2 steals in 23 minutes. The team has since then given ball-handling responsibilities to the likes of Celino Cruz, Willie Miller and Shawn Weinstein.

Duncil on the other hand, has yet to register a minute for the Express in the Governor's Cup, perhaps as a prelude to the team making their move. He was however quite a productive player in the Commissioner's Cup, starting all nine games and putting up averages of 9.89 points, 3.11 rebounds and 1.44 assists in 26.22 minutes.

Air21 will likely hand over the lead floor general role to Arboleda, shifting Paolo Hubalde back to a reserve role. The Express completed a revamp of their backcourt, having previously dealt RJ Jazul to the Alaska Aces in exchange for rookie Eric Salamat.

Ironically, Duncil was a member of Petron's title-winning team last season in the Governor's Cup, before being traded away in the off-season to the then-Shopinas.com Clickers (now Air21 Express).

The former UST Growling Tiger however now finds himself on a stacked roster, with players like Alex Cabagnot, Dennis Miranda, Chris Lutz, Joseph Yeo and Chico Lanete all jockeying for minutes at the guard position on the floor. - AMD, GMA News

Mikee mulls PBA return
By Joey Villar (The Philippine Star) Updated June 20, 2012 12:00 AM

MANILA, Philippines - Sports patron Mikee Romero yesterday hinted at a possibility of owning a pro team again after a brief stint with the Burger King franchise a few years ago.

He, however, opted to keep things under wraps.

“I will tell everyone if all has been ironed out but I’m definitely always interested at having a PBA team,” said Romero in yesterday’s PSA Forum at Shakey’s UN Ave.

The Phl shooting chief and current co-owner of the AirAsia Phl Patriots in the ASEAN Basketball League also implied that there are already plans of acquiring an old franchise by seeking direct help from PBA commissioner Chito Salud himself.

“We’ll tell the commissioner about our plan, perhaps next week,” said Romero.

There were reports that Romero is interested on acquiring the Powerade Tigers franchise, which, according to sources, is up for sale.

If this happens, Romero will get to return to the PBA after serving at the helm of the Burger King Titans three seasons back.

“It’s always a dream for me to be in the PBA, it’s always an exciting prospect,” he added.

Ever wondered how resilient Mikee Romero is...trying to go back to the PBA even if he doesn't have the money?

Let's just put it this way...the pseudo-sister team setup that Romero's planning to buy won't really change. Romero's team will remain to be a pseudo-sister team...not unlike Barako Energy...:)

ED,

Anything that deals with the PBA is really RSA's, not anymore Danding's. Danding though runs the DLSU basketball program and RSA has no say in that.

So anything that's happening with the PBA today for the conglomerate, including the presence of Noli Eala, credit (or blame) RSA for that. This includes the national team imbroglio...

Streaking Powerade signs Nic Belasco as frontline insurance
Rey Joble, InterAKTV · Thursday, June 21, 2012 · 7:52 pm

The Powerade Tigers, the hottest team in the Governors’ Cup, have bolstered their frontline by signing veteran forward Nic Belasco.

The 38-year-old is making his PBA comeback after spending most of the season with the Westports Malaysia Dragons in the ASEAN Basketball League.

Powerade coach Bo Perasol confirmed this latest development to InterAKTV.

“We picked him up from the ABL for insurance,” said Perasol, whose team is on a four-game winning streak and is close to making it to the semifinal round for the second time this season.

Perasol said Belasco, a 14-year PBA vetean, has yet to be included in the 14-man roster.

“He understands his situation and we will include him if necessary. Right now, the team is doing well,” said Perasol.

Belasco was the second overall pick of Sunkist in 1997 and helped the San Miguel Beermen and the Alaska Aces to titles.

He also had stints with Welcoat, Coca-Cola, Talk ‘N Text, and Sta. Lucia, his last PBA team.

PBA Ready To Expand
By WAYLON GALVEZ
June 27, 2012, 5:13pm

PBA Commissioner Angelico “Chito” Salud said Wednesday that the pro league is ready for expansion, and the intention of Global Port under Mikee Romero to join is a clear sign that the PBA remains the No. 1 sports entertainment in the country.

“The more the better, we’re ready to expand,” Salud told the Bulletin in a phone interview yesterday.

“The intent entry of Mikee Romero through Global Port is very clear signal, a very clear sign that the PBA remains very attractive. I don’t see any problem adding a new team,” added Salud.

The other day, Romero, also the CEO and president of Harbour Centre, met with Salud and discussed his desire to rejoin the league. Romero was with Burger King (Air21) in 2009 but pulled out after a few games.

Also discussed by Salud and Romero is the possibility of purchasing an existing franchise – if there’s one available. If none, Romero said he is willing to spend just to have a new team starting next season.

Romero, also co-owner of Air-Asia PH Patriots in the ASEAN Basketball League (ABL), will still have to put in writing his intention to purchase a new franchise, and he plans to do that this week.

Romero needs to get approval from the PBA Board of Governors. A two-thirds vote or seven out of 10 teams will give Global Port the ‘green light’ to become the league’s 11th member team.

Scheduling and availability of players will not be a problem, according to Salud.

“I don’t think it will be a problem (schedule and format), and we also have many players and the exposure of each team will not dwindle. It’s just a matter of having the right format,” he said.

If and when the board approves Romero’s bid, this will the all-time high for the PBA as far as having the number of teams.

When the league started in 1975, it opened shop with nine teams. During the early 80s, the league was cut to six teams due to political unrest in the country. By the late 80s, two more team joined to make it eight.

In 1999, Tanduay rejoined the PBA and Barako Bull entered the following year, and since then, the PBA maintained its 10-member teams. During the Governors’ Cup last season, Barako Bull filed a leave-of-absence.

At the start of the season, the number of teams returned to 10 with the entry of Shopinas.Com (now Air21).

sir nardy if given green light as the 11th member of PBA who will be the possible players? Im thinking it might be players from Air Asia Phil. Patriots?

sir nardy if given green light as the 11th member of PBA who will be the possible players? Im thinking it might be players from Air Asia Phil. Patriots?

there are so many players that are unemployed as there is no PBL and Liga Pilipinas plus there are players who are actually employed as practice players of the current PBA Teams.

Then expect a expansion draft where-in the teams are granted to protect certain number of players while the unprotected can be drafted by the expansion team.

plus there are PBA players whose contracts are expiring.

if there will be an expansion draft (teams protecting 9 players each), there are still a lot of talented players available....billy mamaril, john wilson, chico lanete, jojo duncil, ty tang, jayson ballesteros, aaron aban, etc....

Major events giving Mikee sleepless nights
By Beth Celis
Philippine Daily Inquirer

A COUPLE of forthcoming major sports events is making businessman Mikee Romero sleepless with excitement.

I just don’t know which of the two is giving him the bigger thrill: The London Olympics next month where shooter Brian Rosario is participating in the skeet shooting event (in case you still don’t know, Mikee is president of the Philippine Shooting Association), or his projected entry to the Philippine Basketball Association next season.

* * *

Just last week, Mikee sat down with PBA Comnmissioner Chito Salud to discuss his takeover of the Powerade franchise.

Salud is reportedly convincing Mikee to buy a new franchise, but the businessman/sportsman prefers to purchase the Powerade (Coca-Cola) franchise lock, stock and barrel for two good reasons.

First, the present Tigers lineup is highly competitive, as has been proven last conference. Mikee is a man who hates to lose and buying a franchise where he will have to form the lineup from scratch, might have little appeal to him.

Second, Mikee heard it straight from the Commissioner himself that the Gary David-led Tigers is now the fourth most popular PBA team next to Ginebra, B-Meg and Petron, in that order.

Commissioner Salud told him that this claim is supported by a recent survey.

* * *

If Mikee takes over the Powerade franchise, it is likely that he will keep head coach Bo Perasol and majority of the current Tigers lineup. I heard that Bo is being eyed to take over the head coaching post at Ateneo after this UAAP season. But Bo, a graduate of the University of the Philippines, is inclined to stay put at Powerade.

Norman Black, who gave the Blue Eagles four consecutive titles in the UAAP, is moving up to the PBA this October where he will replace Chot Reyes as Talk ‘N Text head coach.

If and when Mikee buys the Powerade franchise, his charismatic persona is sure to add popularity to the team, while his highly competitive spirit is sure to propel the team upwards.

In a birthday party I attended last Friday, Mikee was called to the podium by the evening’s emcee Snow Badua who introduced him, among many other designations as, “the owner of new PBA team Global Ports.”

Snow said the players of the team will have the moniker “Batang Pier.”

* * *

“So what happens now to Mikee’s Philippine Patriots in the Asean Basketball League?

Looks like he will have to give it up since he himself admitted that he will not be able to maintain two basketball teams.

Mikee said it has always been his dream to own a PBA team.

His other aspiration is a recent vision: To win a gold in the London Olympics.

“Nothing is impossible, Tita Beth. Who knows? Baka makatsamba,” Mikee twice told me, first at the Olympic send-off held at the Blue Leaf Pavilion in Fort Bonifacio. He told me again last Friday during the birthday party.

Meanwhile, he said he will be content to march with the Filipino athletes in the opening day parade.

Lito Alvarez is back as Air21's Governor. No relation to current sister-team Barako's Governor (Manny Alvarez), but it is well known that both are very good friends.

Tough situation for Franz, as real brother Derek's parting with Air21 as coach when the team was still being managed by Lito was not the most amiable. Franz has reportedly now been asking to be "moved" to the Barako Bull coaching post. Will be difficult as current coach Junel Baculi holds the trust of co-owner George Chua.

As early as now, both the MVP and SMC camps have been in talks with Air21 on securing its 2013 first round pick. Both groups are speculating that Air21 will also get the top pick of 2013, and are looking at drafting prized center Greg Slaughter.

MVP's current offer: 2013 pick for Mac Cardona
SMC's current offer: 2013 pick for Denok Miranda and Noy Baclao

Air21 looking at trading the pick to Meralco if they get Cardona plus Jason Ballesteros.
Air21 looking at trading the pick to Petron if they get Baclao plus Joseph Yeo instead of Miranda.

If they get only one, it's either Cardona or Yeo, then sign Allado after his one-conference ban.

On a business perspective maintaining a PBA Team is just too darn expensive. Coke .... Shell, RFM, CFC, Ayala, Toyota they all thought about it and just decided to walk away.

Endangered Powerade Tigers? Coca-Cola’s PBA future uncertain
Rey Joble, InterAKTV · Monday, July 9, 2012 · 6:32 pm

powerade-championship-feeling.jpg

Have we seen the last of the Powerade Tigers, the basketball team of Coca-Cola in the PBA?

Even Tigers coach Bo Perasol doesn’t know what the future holds for the squad.

“It hasn’t been discussed yet,” Perasol told InterAKTV. “We would like to know what the management’s plans are. We would like to know whether or not there will still be a Powerade team in the PBA next season.”

Asuncion, according to Perasol, is currently in Mexico to meet officials of Coca-Cola FEMSA, which is in talks to buy Coca-Cola Bottlers Philippines Inc., which owns the Tigers.

Coke FEMSA has entered into a 12-month deal with the Atlanta-based Coca-Cola company to explore the possibility of acquiring Philippines unit last February.

Powerade had a magical Philippine Cup campaign, crashing the finals as an eighth-seed. But while the team was having its Cinderella run, the squad made several controversial player transactions.

InterAKTV reported last February that Coca-Cola’s PBA franchise had been offered for sale to San Miguel Corporation last November. Despite denials by Powerade management that a sale has been consummated, the Tigers decided to trade away several key players, including star rookie Marcio Lassiter and starting center Doug Kramer.

Asuncion remained firm that Powerade will stay in the PBA, shrugging off talks of sale of Coca-Cola’s PBA franchise.

But even Perasol, who has an offer to coach the Ateneo Blue Eagles in the UAAP next season, is not sure if the team will stay in the league.

PBA media bureau chief Willie Marcial told InterAKTV on Monday that the league has yet to receive notice that Cocke’s PBA franchise is up for sale.

“Wala namang notice, but they have to tell us beforehand if they will be staying in the PBA o ibebenta yung franchise. We assume that they’re staying because wala pa rin naman silang binibigay na notice,” Marcial said in a telephone interview.

One potential buyer of the squad is Mikee Romero, whose Global Port company has expressed interest in joining the PBA by either applying for an expansion squad or buying an existing franchise.
