It appears that 18 teams will play in the first conference, indicating a high level of interest beyond the PBA’s 12 franchises.
One of the teams may be the Philippine 3x3 entry to the Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Graz, Austria, on May 26-30. The initial competition will use a compressed format to finish in 18 days. Altamirano said depending on IATF rules, the games may or may not be held in a bubble. If a vaccine is still not widely available, a bubble will be the only option.
“At the moment, we’re assuming a bubble because of existing conditions,” said Altamirano. “Subject to Board approval, we’re thinking of starting a few days after the PBA draft which is scheduled on March 14 and ending a few days before the 5x5 season begins. Our limitation is if we do a bubble, players won’t be able to practice with their regular PBA teams for over two weeks and since we’ll end on April 5 and the 5x5 season starts April 9, there’s too little time to catch up. So we might play the opening conference without the first 15 or 16 players of each PBA team.
Non-pros will be allowed to join our 3x3 tournament only with a Special Guest License from GAB. There will be more than enough players available for 3x3 and it’s an opportunity for those under the radar to showcase their skills. We’re actually pressed for time to set up and it’s a challenge.”
Marcial said the plan is to stage three 3x3 tournaments in a season – the first before the Philippine Cup, the second in between the Philippine Cup and Commissioner’s Cup and the third in between the Commissioner’s Cup and Governor’s Cup.
Eligibility will conform to FIBA 3x3 rules, meaning anyone with a Philippine passport may play, regardless of ethnicity. Fil-foreigners who are ineligible to play in the PBA 5x5 season because they lack Bureau of Immigration recognition and Department of Justice affirmation despite holding a Philippine passport will be permitted to join. Earning FIBA 3x3 points for the country is a major consideration in the PBA’s program to support SBP, said Marcial.
