Philippine PBA Trades, Releases, Sign-ups, Rumours (vol. III)

Air 21 was a farm team of everyone. I remember the draft wherein they had picks 1, 2, 3 (now that's what you call tanking lmfao). Then traded all those players the following year to San Miguel. Lol buti na lang that trade backfired for San Miguel but that deal was stupendous.

and to make thing worse, they purchased the original Red Bull Franchise and turned it to a farm team as well.

and much worse they renamed Red Bull to Air 21 while Air 21 became Barako Bull eventually, way to confuse people and records!

Intriguing. But personally, I'd take Erram over Slaughter hands down. Maybe Slaughter would be a better fit over a Meralco. Close to impossible that SMC allows themselves to be a conduit between MVP teams but what if:

Ginebra - Rosario
Meralco - Slaughter
TNT - Belo or Hodge

Agreed, Greg would fit better with Black's old-school system in MERALCO, and TNT prefers mobile bigs who can shoot like Troy and Erram.

That would be a win-win-win scenario, although that still doesn't solve TNT's frontline depth issues.

Oh yeah, totally forgot about the franchise switcheroo. Lmfao

So who now owns the original Fedex franchise? And that godforsaken Shopinas franchise?

Idk about the history of Air21 but i have this feeling that they were also a farm team of TNT during those mid 2000's era before they were Barako Bull (not sure about this tho) . Aside from that trade they also traded Ranidel for Allado which for me was a lopsided win for TNT. YDo also returned to TNT after his stint with Air21 if im not mistaken.

Yeah that RDO trade really set the tone for the TNT franchise as they started winning again once they acquired him, also it didnt help that after that conference Allado was shipped to Purefoods.

the red bull franchise that became shopinas then renamed to freaking Air 21 was bought by NLEX

the Air 21 franchise that became Red Bull was purchased by Phx petroleum

Or vice versa, what Lina did is freaking annoying and confusing

On the flipside, Fedex also dealt Arwind to SMB for a late first round pick and Pingris. THEN THEY DEALT PINGRIS TO PUREFOODS THE NEXT DAY. Lol

FedEx was everyone's beeyotch.

Hahahaha

I don't know what's more confusing: the franchise switcheroo or the MVP trades that uses conduit teams.

prior 2007-08 FedEx was actually competitive, I guess when Fedex moved out of the Philippines and Lina was forced to finance the team on his own eventually transformed the franchise into a farm team, when the franchise was renamed as Burger King, the team was composed of mostly discards.

When Phoenix acquired the Air 21 franchise, I feared that the same thing would happen again. Really glad that Phoenix is for real.. for now.

key word "for now", 2022 is fast approaching and its results may not favor Dennis Uy

I'm kinda pessimistic about 2022. The polls still favor the supporters of the current administration, which is friendly to Uy. Once people see those names, they'll forget about the others. Bandwagon effect.

anyway regardless of the winner ( dilaw or dds), we are still screwed, well atleast Bong Go is a avid basketball fan..deep sigh...I suddenly remember that RSA was actually a campaign donor for PRRD

back to basketball, for the good of PBA i hope Phx dom't end up as a farm team,

I agree, both sides are shit.

As for Phoenix being a farm team, that will be unlikely if Uy doesn't sell the team. Man, sana mag-expand na PBA. Too much talent's being wasted. It's cramped.

Kaso if you are an independent team who is planning on entering the league, then you see the SMC MVP shitshow, would you even want to enter the league?

Why waste 100m a year if those two companies can always have the best players via farm teams.

that's why Henry Sy never attempted to enter the PBA and decided to finance NU, same with the late Bong Tan and Tanduay.
Sad to see Blackwater become a joke of a franchise, it had a storied history in the pbl and the pba d league, but once the Elite entered the league, reality bit them and decided just to farm, which is actually a good business model for struggling franchise. The same could be said to Harbor Center/Northport, another winning pbl team, but its status as a farm team was due to RSA getting majority control of Northport.

As long as the empires continue their practice, prospective pba franchises will be discouraged. I hope ROS and Alaska won't leave the
league, same with Phx.

Quinito's gem

https://www.philstar.com/sports/2021/02/04/2075226/rosales-bites-bullet-reboot

This is Narvasa 3 years after the Cstand SMB/Kia trade:

"Sometimes there are things that you cannot share with the public. There are some things that are there, that it has to be discussed only within the board for them to be able to understand. There are only some things that you can impart with the public. You just have to respect that.”

This is public yet Quinito decides to keep kayfabe alive. Zero respect for fans.

because you don't join purely to win. no matter how bad the fans think of the PBA, we are still talking about it. thats still marketing. a large part is also passion for the sport. cant say for the others but ROS and Blackwater owners are really passionate with basketball and Alaska owner has always projected himself as a sports minded person.

put aside marketing and the money. how can adding teams help the league? if whoever new team simply get from draft and FA, then it'll be years until they become decent against the current top teams. baka maging farm team lng din sila if they cant manage their team well in the first few years. can we comfortably say the current draft aspirants have a pull on the audience? and also, team owners(thru the governors) will vote to add new teams. why would they allow new teams in (specially SMC and TNT)?

A bit OT but somehow related to the SMC dominance in the PBA.

RSA is a very powerful man right now. No one can cross him with the backing of both the Head of State and Head of Congress. Plus the recent positive PR of the other SMC projects (outside basketball) shall further build their equity. Their business empire is one of the only flourishing conglomerates in the country, despite the pandemic. Just imagine the level of influence. Not saying that it is bad, I'm just stating facts. This SMB issue shall be definitely forgetten in a few and no one in the PBA can do anything, not even MVP.

Come to think of it, it's an SMC country now.

Yeah especially with how they helped during the pandemic, people won't forget what they did. And most PBA fans are fans of SMC teams. It's only a few hardcore minorities who are vocal against the trade
