Yes they can. The thing is, it's Narvasa's job to veto any trade deal made. But I would grant that the Board has enough power to influence Narvasa to make a just stand on this. And Narvasa would only act based on how the Board decides.

The question is, will the Board make such a move? There are 12 teams - 3 of which are already with the SMC camp. Assuming SMB and KIA don't get a vote, they have two votes already tucked in. They only need 6. The other party may get 4 votes - 3 from the MVP camp and Alaska. It would be interesting then to find out who GBP, PHX, BWE and ROS will vote for...

In my opinion, of the 4 wild cards BW and ROS would side with MVP. Global could side with SMC. Not so sure with Phoenix, I don't really know much about their owner Mr. Uy.

My theory is that Narvasa has given up hope of bringing back the fans through league parity. With 12 teams around, establishing balance and parity is difficult, especially if the financial resources of each team differs from the other. It was effective when Tommy Manotoc was running the PBA back then as Deputy Commissioner because he only had to contend with 6-8 teams. And most of these teams can afford their operating costs, aside from the fact that player salaries weren't really that high before.

So one option Narvasa may have considered to bring back the popularity of the league is go old school - have two teams dominate the league and form a rivalry that will approximate, if not, surpass, the Crispa-Toyota war of the past. And who are these two teams? SMB and Ginebra. Both have the biggest fanbases in the PBA today (aside from Star), both have casual fans that don't really care if the league will suffer so long as their teams are up in the standings and dominating, and both are capable of having an insane rivalry in the coming years. Let these two teams dominate, every SMB-Ginebra game would be packed to the rafters with their rabid supporters. No different from Crispa and Toyota back then....

But sir weren't Crispa and Toyota run by different owners? Their rivalry has legitimate basis. But SMB and Ginebra are sister teams. Any effort to drum up "bad blood" between sister teams seems futile..
Narvasa is the Vince McMahon of the PBA

lots of ways of bringing back the fans but not this way. it's already imbalance and lots of people already stop watching the games. some smb fans doesn't agree with the pending trade. it's just narvasa isn't as creative as commissioner

What if, even if the trade gets approve, MVP asks Christian Standhardinger and Ravena to withdraw from the draft....

That's possible. But it'll have serious consequences, not to MVP but to the players. But if they withdraw before the draft is held, then, that's okay. But if they do so after having already been drafted, that means their PBA rights will now be owned by their drafting teams.

The question is...how far is their reach on CS and Kief? Maybe Kief but CS? We don't know yet, especially if the SMC money starts talking...

Yes, they were. But so what if they're sister teams? Remember, the most memorable rivalries in the 80's and 90's featured sister teams SMB and Ginebra also. And then, the most popular rivalry we have now is Manila Clasico.

For casual fans, it doesn't matter who owns these teams. It's only hardcore purists who worry about these things. And they're part of a small minority. Those casual fans who go the venue, cheer their lungs out, fight with fans of the opponents, etc. are what matters to the PBA.

Of course...and I'm not justifying it. Just theorizing what Narvasa's gambit may be to bring back relevance to the league.

Think about it, the PBA has been imbalanced since Air 21 and Barako Bull were still around. Their roles were merely replaced by Global Port and Phoenix. And then you add KIA and BWE. How do you maintain balance when SMC's coffer is so sizable that even MPIC can't match this? What more ROS and Alaska, the indie teams? There's just no way of maintaining parity.

But, Narvasa was already grown up when he saw the popularity of the PBA during the Crispa-Toyota era. And if they can only have two teams today form a rivalry and make it like a dynasty, then that may be the best option available for the league. Star, the MVP teams and the indie teams can serve as the U/Tex, Royal Tru Orange or Great Taste - teams that can steal the thunder once in awhile, but in the end, it will still be SMB and Ginebra duking it out.

It's easier and more convenient this way. Plus, RSA will be happy and will ensure continuous support to Narvasa and the PBA. Narvasa gets his security of tenure, the PBA stays relevant by retaining the most popular teams in the league.

The sick PBA gets a chance to heal but instead takes more of that stuff that makes it ill in the first place.

These are all fair points which I agree with, but this is being done at the expense of alienating fans of the other teams (which is also a sizeable base) and putting new viewers off (due to the lack of parity and tournament predictability). Worst, it comes at the expense of the national team as the best players are "iced" out of the pool.
Reliance on tried and tested formulas also betrays Narvasa's limitations as commissioner.

I don't disagree with you. These are all correct.

But put yourself in Narvasa's shoes and do the math. When you have the bean counter in front of you, you assess which is best for the league. Either way, you'll be alienating fans anyhow so which fanbase will you put your chips on? In the end, whoever has the bigger fanbase will win. But more importantly, whoever has the deeper pocket will prevail. Sad truth.

Perhaps, mvp can give standhardinger a gilas contract now that takes effect the moment his abl contract expires and signed before the pba draft? So whoever drafts cs will have to contend with an existing contract and this will make them think twice about drafting cs? Another factor is that cs will only he available after the abl season.

The thing is whatever the MVP group is going to do publicly will further create tension between 2 groups, that is why I guess Alaska has been most vocal. And the fact, that they also did the same trade for 1st pick before. MVP group I think is the alarmed "board members who requested anonymity" in the articles.

For the NT's sake critical is we have CS for Nov ( no choce) whcih i think is still going to happen , still in the ABL, but after Nov it looks dim to get CS, have to fast track Austin then

Which means SMB will draft Ravena, which will be worse since we can use Standhardinger as a backup naturalized once Blatche is available or naturalize Austin or someone else, but Ravena projects to be a regular Gilas player for the next decade or so and him playing for SMB will jeopardize all that.

Then have cs and ravena withdraw, the abl waits for them. Then jeron teng can become the next alex araneta, apet jao, and paolo mendoza.

Here's another way of looking at it:

There's a risk involved in the early announcement of such a trade deal, assuming it will be consummated. Under normal circumstances, trading a pick normally happens during draft day, when one cannot pre-empt the action of another. But with this development, a couple of factors are involved:

1. This announcement has created a lot of buzz on social media and various basketball forums. Much of the decision of the Commissioner will obviously be affected by the fans' response. What could be an acceptable trade deal may change overnight if the fans' reactions would be negative.

2. The bigger consequence: a trade deal is consummated between SMB and KIA - and SMB gives up on guys like Rosser, Tubid, McCarthy and YDO for that first pick. If this is approved on Thursday (after the Board meeting), what if CS and Kiefer decide to pull out of the draft pool on Friday? That means SMB will end up with the shorter end of the stick - giving up on 4 reserves for a Jeron Teng.

CS can still play for us in feb as he's still with hk lions
