Former Alaska grand slam coach Tim Cone admitted the other day he’s looking around for a job and said coaching B-Meg is a possibility in the coming PBA season.
“I’m still searching,” said Cone. “B-Meg is a possibility but there are other teams that are under consideration.” No formal announcement has been made as to Cone’s next assignment but a source close to him confided that “my guess is B-Meg na siya.”
At the B-Meg camp, acting head coach Richard del Rosario continues to supervise the practices at the Ronac Center. Former head coach Jorge Gallent has slid to assistant coach. Del Rosario said he’ll do his best to serve the team in whatever capacity. Rey Evangelista has resigned from the staff, leaving Koy Banal and Art de la Cruz and video coordinator Dayong Mendoza in the support group.
“I didn’t expect to be named acting coach,” said Del Rosario. “I feel a little awkward about it since it was Jorge who recruited me. I don’t want him to think I was after his job. But we all just follow orders to the best of our ability. I’m honored by the trust that management has shown. I didn’t even think I was in the radar. But whether I end up as head coach or stay as assistant coach, I’ll do my best for the team and live up to management’s expectations.”
Del Rosario said last season, the coaching staff was split into two-man scouting teams. “Art and Koy would do one game and Rey and I would do another,” said Del Rosario. “Each two-man team worked on offense and defense. I still don’t know if there will be additions to the staff. We’re awaiting orders from top management. But we’re getting ready for next season. Joe (De Vance) has started practicing. Kerby (Raymundo) is arriving on Sept. 22 from the US. James (Yap), Roger (Yap), P. J. (Simon), Josh (Urbiztondo), Jerwin (Gaco) are all back.”
Del Rosario said he’s hoping to resume working with Gallent. “We see each other every day, even after practice, we get together,” he continued. “No matter what happens, our relationship will remain as strong as before. Shopinas reunites Pumaren, Ritualo

MANILA, Philippines - Three-point specialist RenRen Ritualo is reuniting with his La Salle coach Franz Pumaren in a bid to put his skidding pro basketball career back on track and said yesterday he’s ready to provide the leadership that will make Shopinas competitive in the PBA this coming season.
Ritualo, 32, was FedEx’ eighth overall pick in the 2002 draft after a storybook career at La Salle where he powered the Green Archers to four straight UAAP championships under Pumaren. He averaged in double figures in his first seven PBA seasons but his numbers dropped precipitously in the last three. Ritualo has gone from FedEx-Air 21 to Talk ‘N’ Text back to Air 21 then to Powerade to Meralco and finally, to Shopinas.
Last season, Ritualo averaged a career-low 4.6 points in 14 games with Powerade and 15 with Meralco, going scoreless in nine outings. His scoring clip has dropped consistently in the last seven seasons from a career-high 18.4 with Air 21 in 2005-06 to 17.9 to 14.3 to 11.8 to 7.1 to 6.6 to 4.6. But if there’s anyone who can rekindle Ritualo’s fire, it’s Pumaren. They go back a long way. In the offseason, Ritualo was released by Meralco and Pumaren, newly hired by Shopinas as head coach, didn’t hesitate to recruit his top gun from their Archer days.
A La Salle legend, Ritualo is one of only three cagers whose jersey number was retired by his alma mater. The others are Kurt Bachmann and Lim Eng Beng.
“I’m excited to be with coach Franz again,” said Ritualo. “As you all know, we were together at La Salle. He taught me a lot of things I know now in basketball. I think my experience will help me provide leadership to the team. My goal is to help build a team that’s not only competitive but also has the heart to win. Fans should expect a team that works together as one to give them fun and exciting games.”
Ritualo isn’t the only La Salle star with Shopinas. Pumaren also brought in former Archers Hyram Bagatsing and Brian Ilad. Bagatsing applied for last year’s draft but wasn’t picked. Ilad was chosen by B-Meg in the recent draft and went to Shopinas in a three-way trade that sent Mark Barroca to Derby Ace, Don Allado and the Llamados’ second round pick in 2015 to Barako Bull and Elmer Espiritu to the Clickers.
There are 14 players in the Shopinas roster at the moment but Pumaren said tryouts are ongoing at North Greenhills. “No guaranteed slots yet,” he said. “Players are still trying out for the team.” So far, the players reporting for practice are Ritualo, Bagatsing, Ilad, Magi Sison, Dennis Daa, Khazim Mirza, Marvin Cruz, Pong Escobal, Mark Canlas, R. J. Jazul, Paolo Hubalde, Jojo Duncil and Ogie Menor. Espiritu recently joined the squad.
Pumaren explained that while Shopinas went up the stage to pick Barroca in the recent draft, it was more a formality because B-Meg had previously acquired the slot. “We want to assure fans that we didn’t give away our fifth pick,” said Pumaren. “Apparently, our pick was traded to B-Meg by the late Tony Chua and the PBA didn’t even know about it. We also found out that we won’t get a first round pick in 2012. We’re asking for a written confirmation of all transactions related not only to us but also to other teams so we can be guided accordingly.”
Pumaren said Shopinas management attempted to trade for Ginebra pick Reil Cervantes and Barako choice Dylan Ababou but no deal was consummated. Ginebra decided to keep Cervantes when Rudy Hatfield accepted a job offer in the US.
Pumaren said former Archers Cholo Villanueva and Tonichi Yturri will join his coaching staff as assistants with Jack Santiago. Strength and conditioning coach Dan Rose will also be in the staff.
“We’re excited to be a part of the PBA family and we’re looking forward to the start of the season despite the lack of talent pool and time,” said Pumaren. “Our governor Ms. Sheila Lina wants to get the best talent available for us to provide the fans with a competitive team that could play with the best teams in the league. Management and staff have set modest goals at the start of the season. We’re looking at improving as the season progresses. With patience, perseverance and a lot of hard work, it’s our vision to be contenders in the very near future.”
Pumaren, in his first head coaching job in the PBA, added that he’s confident of what the team can do. “I’m optimistic we can put up a team worthy of the fans following,” he went on. “Expect us to spring some surprises. Having a dynamic pair in Ms. Sheila and team manager Jovie Saddul, ours will be a breath of fresh air to the league. We will be relentless in our pursuit of recognition and respect. PBA board OKs hiking player, team salary cap
The PBA board of governors, in a hastily-arranged meeting Thursday at the PBA office Libis, approved raising both the player and team salary caps.
League commissioner Chito Salud made the recommendation of increasing the maximum salary allowed per player by 20 percent, where the new arrangement will give a player a maximum salary of P420,000 from the previous P350,000.
The PBA also adjusted the team salary cap of P36 million to P42 million, an agenda that was initially included in the board's annual planning session in Hong Kong last week, but was decided to be deferred later on.
"Initially, this (salary cap hike) is something that we did not want," said PBA board chairman Mamerto Mondragon of Rain or Shine. "But we realized that we have to strengthen all the teams and we have to make adjustments."
The drastic move adopted by the board was in obvious reaction to the serious allegations raised by Wilfred Uytengsu just a week ago where the Alaska team owner revealed that violations are being committed on the league's salary cap rule.
Salud vowed to castigate violators especially now that a new salary cap rule is in effect.
"The rules apply to all. The Board has made a decision to make it an even playing field and for the players to perform better for the fans," said Salud.
"I call on all team owners, managers, players and agents to look at the greater good of the league. Should there be any kind of breach at this salary cap I will not waste time running after the violators."
Also approved during Thursday's board meeting is the increase in the won-game bonuses to be given to players, including that of a championship incentive where the team involved is allowed to give as much as it can afford.
Won game bonuses in the elimination round and quarterfinals were raised to P6,000 from P4,000 while cash incentives of P8,000 and P10,000 will be given to a player for each win in the semifinals and Finals.
For a team that wins a championship, the board approved that bonuses to be given will be left to the discretion of the champion franchise.
"Yes, wealthy teams will have that advantage," Mondragon pointed out. "But we have to live with that."
Salud, however, said that players currently receiving the maximum pay of P350,000 will not automatically get a pay hike.
There are 15 players listed by the PBA to be recipients of the previous maximum pay. — JVP, GMA News

Why Jay Washington and Arwind Santos can’t win championship together?
This fearless tandem of Jay Washington and Arwind Santos, both from San Miguel Beermen/Petron Blaze Boosters, is a very tough to beat, in terms of offense and defense.
Jay Washington was acquired by SMB in 2008 in exchange of its third pick in the PBA 2008 Draft, which is Jason Castro. Most of the fans said that the acquisition of Washington is the second coming of Danny Seigle, in which the latter is on his “twilight” of his career because of his injuries. With an impressive resume of being the Top pick in the PBA 2005 Draft, SMB fans expected a lot from him to bring back the “glory days” of SMB.
On the other hand, Arwind Santos, was acquired by SMB through a trade involving Air21 and Purefoods (now BMeg). They (SMB) shipped back Marc Pingris, the other 2008 Fiesta Conference Finals MVP (some analysts said), to Purefoods and gave Air21 Ken Bono and its 2010 first round pick. Some PBA insiders that Santos, before signing a deal with Air21 in 2006, is “already traded” to SMB after his contract expires.
With the tandem of the two best players in the league, and surrounded by the other stars like Hontiveros, Cabagnot, Ildefonso and Seigle, most of the sports-analysts and PBA fans (and even PBA coaches) pick SMB as the top team to beat in 2009 – 2010 season. When the 35th season of the PBA kicked off, SMB got the semi-finals slot in both Philippine and Fiesta Conference. Both Washington and Santos averaged double figures in points and close to double digits in rebounding. And in the Fiesta Conference 2010, they met Alaska Aces for their finals showdown and the team lost. Jay Washington is the best player of the conference.
Promised to come back in the 36th season, Washington and Santos brought back SMB to the Philippine Cup Finals versus Talk N Text, where Washington, publicly stated that he has still the animosity of being traded by Chot Reyes, the opponent’s head coach. But still, they lost to TNT in 6 games, for consolation prize, Washington was named as the Best Player of the Conference for the second time.
In the two finals stint by SMB in the finals (with Alaska and Talk N Text), where is Arwind Santos? Well, during that time, he is very busy throwing those three point shots every game and he feels like Allan Caidic or Reggie Miller in SMB jersey. Although both players averaging double figures, they can’t still find the right formula of getting the championships they wanted. And in the Commissioner’s Cup, SMB tasted their first elimination. After trading Seigle, Hontiveros, Pena and Artadi to Air21 to yet unknown rookies then, SMB failed and got eliminated.
With one conference left in the season, Petron Blaze Boosters, armed with youth and athlecism, Washington and Santos again promised to give Ato Agustin another championship run. When Washington got injured against Air21, and declared to be out of the rest of the conference, Santos solely shouldered the responsibilities of bringing back Petron to the finals. And the rest is history…
Arwind Santos is the Best Player of the Conference and the 2011 Governor’s Cup Finals MVP. Played like an import, averaging double-double in both points and rebounds, he deserved to be the MVP of the Finals.
To sum it up, Washington and SMB won Fiesta Cup 2009 without Arwind Santos, and Arwind Santos and Petron won the Governor’s Cup 2011 without Jay Washington. But when the two players played together and faced Alaska and Talk N Text in the finals, yet they are beaten out cold.
Maybe because one factor is they can both play similar positions and they don’t know that each other exists in every game. Washington wanted the ball to be effective and be the focal point of offense, while Santos wanted to be the Triggerman every game. They really don’t know how to deal with their plays when they are both in the court. Washington, sometimes, tend to “go solo” especially when his temper goes wild. Santos, to be fair, is a very good defender. Just ask Willie Miller on how Santos handled him during their face-off.
In order for them to win championship together, one must step forward and the other to step backward. Washington must play aggressive in every game and must learn how to pass the ball, just like Danny Ildefonso. And Santos, already knew what type of play he is more suitable like manning the boards and put backs. Arwind is more comfortable in PF while Jay is more of a SF player. And one thing more, they must minimize their outside shooting, especially in the three point area. They must accept that they are not the Reggie Miller type of a player. If they will accept the role and doesn’t mind who will be the main man of the team, I think that they can “co-exist” with each other.

Promised to come back in the 36th season, Washington and Santos brought back SMB to the Philippine Cup Finals versus Talk N Text, where Washington, publicly stated that he has still the animosity of being traded by Chot Reyes, the opponent’s head coach. But still, they lost to TNT in 6 games, for consolation prize, Washington was named as the Best Player of the Conference for the second time.
In the two finals stint by SMB in the finals (with Alaska and Talk N Text), where is Arwind Santos? Well, during that time, he is very busy throwing those three point shots every game and he feels like Allan Caidic or Reggie Miller in SMB jersey. Although both players averaging double figures, they can’t still find the right formula of getting the championships they wanted. And in the Commissioner’s Cup, SMB tasted their first elimination. After trading Seigle, Hontiveros, Pena and Artadi to Air21 to yet unknown rookies then, SMB failed and got eliminated.
With one conference left in the season, Petron Blaze Boosters, armed with youth and athlecism, Washington and Santos again promised to give Ato Agustin another championship run. When Washington got injured against Air21, and declared to be out of the rest of the conference, Santos solely shouldered the responsibilities of bringing back Petron to the finals. And the rest is history…
Arwind Santos is the Best Player of the Conference and the 2011 Governor’s Cup Finals MVP. Played like an import, averaging double-double in both points and rebounds, he deserved to be the MVP of the Finals.
To sum it up, Washington and SMB won Fiesta Cup 2009 without Arwind Santos, and Arwind Santos and Petron won the Governor’s Cup 2011 without Jay Washington. But when the two players played together and faced Alaska and Talk N Text in the finals, yet they are beaten out cold.
Maybe because one factor is they can both play similar positions and they don’t know that each other exists in every game. Washington wanted the ball to be effective and be the focal point of offense, while Santos wanted to be the Triggerman every game. They really don’t know how to deal with their plays when they are both in the court. Washington, sometimes, tend to “go solo” especially when his temper goes wild. Santos, to be fair, is a very good defender. Just ask Willie Miller on how Santos handled him during their face-off.
In order for them to win championship together, one must step forward and the other to step backward. Washington must play aggressive in every game and must learn how to pass the ball, just like Danny Ildefonso. And Santos, already knew what type of play he is more suitable like manning the boards and put backs. Arwind is more comfortable in PF while Jay is more of a SF player. And one thing more, they must minimize their outside shooting, especially in the three point area. They must accept that they are not the Reggie Miller type of a player. If they will accept the role and doesn’t mind who will be the main man of the team, I think that they can “co-exist” with each other.
