Petron/San Miguel set to trade Alex Cabagnot to GlobalPort for Sol Mercado

From: Snow Badua February 17, 2014, 06:58 pm

AFTER changing its name and its coach, San Miguel Beer has now shifted its attention to altering its roster.

According to a source, a big one-on-one trade is set to be consummated hours – or days – from now by San Miguel flagship franchise that will have starting guard Alex Cabagnot swapping places with GlobalPort's high-scoring guard Sol Mercado.

The trade papers have already been signed and delivered to the PBA Commissioner's Office for approval, the source added.

“I think the team is working on a couple of trades right now. Baka in the next 24 hours,” said the San Miguel Beer source. “Pero dadalhin na sa PBA office 'yan. One-on-one lang yan.”

Spin.ph tried to contact San Miguel and Globalport officials, but both declined to comment on the matter.

The trade comes in the wake of San Miguel’s decision to replace Gee Abanilla as head coach in favor of Biboy Ravanes, who will have American Todd Purves by his side as 'active consultant.'

Before that, the franchise has also dropped the Petron name.

Another source bared it was new Globalport coach Pido Jarencio who approved the trade first as he once handled Cabagnot when he was still a deputy coach at Petron.

Meanwhile, Mercado has reportedly been offered to several teams before San Miguel took an interest on him, paving the way for the Fil-Am guard’s move to a third team in less than 12 months.

Once approved, the trade will see Chris Ross taking over the starting point guard chores for the Petron/SMB franchise with Mercado completing a deadly set of wingmen with Marcio Lassiter and Chris Lutz.

On the other hand, Cabagnot will be a veteran presence in a GlobalPort backcourt that in the last Philippine Cup relied mostly on rookies RR Garcia and Terrence Romeo.

Nothing change in PG scheme in SMB side :D hero ball traded to another Hero ball :p

^i also think that the crunchman is better than sol. alex is a hero but sol is a superhero :p
plus, i believe alex helped his team get a championship back then while the other one is always in the mid/bottom half of the standings..

Sol's penchant of turnovers during crucial stage of a game will be his downside and he's a big time choker in his RoSE days!
But I hope this will be change as he's now playing to a contender and an all-star team!

When ROS faces SMB with Mercado, expect Gabe to handle Sol. He's the best player out there to contain him...

Petron/SMB to get Maierhofer, Chua in complex seven-player, four-team trade

THE Sol Mercado-Alex Cabagnot swap may just be the tip of the iceberg.

According to insiders, Petron/San Miguel and GlobalPort are involved in another complex deal with Air21 and Barako Bull that will see seven players and draft picks changing hands on Tuesday morning.

The two-part deal, which is set be reviewed by PBA commissioner Chito Salud on Tuesday, will start off with GlobalPort sending veteran wingman Leo Najorda to Barako Bull for Jonas Villanueva who in turn will be shipped to Air21 for two-guard Bonbon Custodio.

Petron/San Miguel will then get involved in the second part of the transaction, dealing sophomore Yousef Taha and its 2016 second-round pick to Barako Bull for Rico Maierhofer.

Taha will then be sent by Barako to GlobalPort for rookie Justin Chua, who will then be shipped by the Energy to Petron/San Miguel for sweet-shooting big man Jason Deustchman and the 2016 second-round pick.

Once the whirl of transactions are approved by Salud, Petron/San Miguel will end up as the biggest winner by getting two big men to shore up its frontline in Maierhofer and Chua.

Barako will get Deustchman, Najorda, and a future draft pick; GlobalPort will get back former player Taha and Custodio to add to Cabagnot, who arrived from Petron/San Miguel in a separate deal in exchange for Sol Mercado.

On the other hand, Air21 will finally have a legitimate point guard in Villanueva.

Still, the biggest gainer is undoubtedly Petron/San Miguel, which will now have Maierhofer and Chua to boost a frontline that depended too much on June Mar Fajardo in the last Philippine Cup campaign.

However, the deals are dependent on the approval of Salud.

i think sol is a perfect fit for smb...sol, lutz, arwind...perfect db?lol

seriously, it's definitely another upgrade in talent...question is chemistry, again. i thought when eala was ousted they'd stop this wheeling and dealing. anyway, smb became stronger on paper but can they translate that to wins? we'll see.

It's somehow surprising that GP is trading away chua...he looks like a very promising big. and taking in bonbon? i don't see him as a jarencio type of player..let's see how they all fit in. this trade doesn't look good for any team but air21 who got jonas for bonbon.

wow. smb stackin' up again.

hahaha Cabagnot and Jwash back together again. Just think, what if GPBP trades Nabong for Santos + cash considerations. The three stooges live again. smh

I see Durden Tyler as a happy man for SMB this coming conference. His favorite team name is back and so the winning-est ball club in PBA history.
