Mike Cortez to Air 21 looms as 3-team trade with Ginebra, Petron in the works

If plans don’t miscarry, Mike Cortez will have a reunion of sorts with his former college coach Franz Pumaren.

A three-team trade that will send Cortez to the Express is now in the works among Air 21, Barangay Ginebra San Miguel, and Petron Blaze.

Pumaren, the Air 21 coach, and team executive Lito Alvarez told InterAKTV that they’ve already proposed a trade to Barangay Ginebra San Miguel for the services of the veteran guard, who played for the coach at La Salle.

Cortez was Pumaren’s starting point guard when the Green Archers won its fourth straight title in 2001. The coach had earlier expressed interest to be reunited with his former sentinel.

“We’re still waiting for them,” Pumaren told InterAKTV when asked which players will be dealt in the three-way trade. “Depende yan sa kanila.”

Alvarez said the trade would also involve Petron Blaze, which is likely to send veteran guard Denok Miranda in the deal.

“Kailangan ng guard ng Ginebra while yung Petron naman, malaki ang kailangan nila dahil injured si (June Mar) Fajardo and (Danny) Ildefonso,” said Alvarez.

According to the executive, either rookie center Yousef Taha or James Sena can be included in the three-team deal.

Obviously, Cortez will be traded, in exchange for a big man, for one of the Air21's bigs- Baclao, Reyes, Taha and Isip!

Knowing Air21, a straight-up "Taha for Cortez" trade is actually a "Taha for Cortez + cash under the table" deal.

Good suggestion. But as many has pointed out in the past, Air21 is SMC's bitch. Only a matter of time (and correct amount!) before it happens.

since when did Air21 did a wise trade? they would even bend over and get butt raped for the right price. but of course Air21 doesn't really go empty handed with these so-called lopsided trades. the cash incentives are just too hard to pass.

especially when that's the reason for the team's existence..How do you explain a formerly cash strapped franchise (Red Bull almost disbanded) now having two teams?

Air 21 is really run by the Lina Group. There's no question about that. Barako Bull is supposedly co-owned by Bert Lina and George Chua of the Photokina Group (erstwhile franchise owners of Red Bull in the Philippines). But we all know who runs the team on the financial front - they are the same guys in charge of distributing Barako Energy Coffee all over the Philippines.

Air21 got salamat and a 2nd round pick (which turned up to be taha) for rj jazul....seems a good trade....

Taha could turn up to be cortez if the rumors are true...

If GSM lets go of Cortez, they should get another back up PG. If Petron gives Miranda, they would have Lanete and Mallari when ACab sits. IMO, they should first address the coaching situation before trades.

So the trade that will send COOL CAT to Team A2 is imminent, but Team G will not allow it without a bigger prize. Team G rejected Team A2's initial trade offer just to get COOL CAT.

The story goes like this: Team A2 offered BIG CARDINAL, SUPREMO, BIG DOUBLE R, and EYESHIELD 21 for COOL CAT, UNDERSIZED ARCHER POWER FORWARD, and BM. But Team G declined the offer and handed their own trade platform.

In Team G's offer, it will only be COOL CAT and UNDERSIZED ARCHER POWER FORWARD for BIG CARDINAL, BIG DOUBLE R, and SUPREMO. BM, who could have been sent to Team A2 in the initial proposal, will now go to Team B together with HIGH-FLYING WARRIOR for SAINT and BIG EAGLE.

The BIG CARDINAL is A2's first draft pick this year (but not a first rounder). The HIGH-FLYING WARRIOR is known for a "SPIRITUAL" surname. The BIG EAGLE can be often seen in a sports video blog on Youtube and a news site. In fact, it was in the same video blog that a hint of this trade PROPOSAL was "accidentally" leaked.

Take note of the final word in all uppercase. This is for real, but it will be subject to some tweaking should a prior trade proposal involving Team A2, Team G, and Team P is approved.
