MANILA, Philippines - Billy Ray Bates, a former Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) import player, was arrested by policemen in Quezon City, Monday morning.

A report by radio dzMM quoting Police Officer 2 Alvin Quisumbing said that Bates was arrested at around 12:20 a.m. near Farmer's Market in Cubao district.

The report said that Bates was arrested after throwing a rock at a limousine owned by businessman Carlos Vicente.

Bates was able to run, but was arrested by policemen after being spotted within the Cubao area at around 6 a.m.

The report said that Bates denied throwing a rock at the limousine, but has agreed to pay for the damage.

The former PBA import player also claimed that he was held up by two men and his passport, cell phone and cash amounting to P7,000 were taken before the supposed rock-throwing incident.

Bates played as an import for PBA teams Ginebra, Crispa and Great Taste Coffee during the 1980s.

DEPORTATION TIME????

first of all...somebody owns and uses a limo here in metro manila???? secondly, wtf was bates doing in cubao? oh wait, i think i know...lol

More rigodon in the works

Barroca to Meralco, San Mig Coffee getting Vanlandingham and Global Port ending-up with Ross.

Teams are really busy firming-up their respective line-ups. You could probably call the 2012 Season the Total Make-over season after all the wheeling and dealing are all finalized and approved by PBA Commissioner Chito Salud.

Sir, can we assume that this supposed trade was off-the-table already? San Mig already got Wesley from a trade. Thanks.

Yup, even if Vanlandingham could have fit to the needs of team, getting "only" Ross is not that attractive for Mikee. As you you know in any deal, all parties must agree to it so in the the end there was no meeting of minds for all 3 parties concerned.

Ex-PBA import accosted for smashing car windshield

http://www.philstar.com/nation/article.aspx?publicationSubCategoryId=65&articleId=852500

MANILA, Philippines - Former Philippine Basketball Association import Billy Ray Bates was accosted yesterday morning by police for allegedly destroying the windshield of a Mercedes Benz limousine.

Police Officer 2 Alvin Quisumbing said policemen of the Quezon City Police District Station 7 picked up Bates as he was allegedly drunk and sleeping at the parking area of the Farmer’s Market at around 6 a.m.

Quisumbing said policemen accosted the American following complaints made by Carlos Vicente, 48, who owns a rent-a-car business.

A resident said he saw Bates reportedly smashing the windshield of a white, six-door limousine (WNU-404) at around 12:20 a.m. while it was parked in front of a car repair shop in Barangay Kaunlaran.

Vicente and Bates were brought to the Quezon City Police District’s Criminal Investigation and Detection Unit, after which Vicente agreed not to file charges against Bates if the American paid for the damage within three days. Bates signed the agreement.

Bates told policemen he was not drunk. He also claimed he was running along First Planas street from two robbers who took his mobile phone and money. He said he did not have the robbery recorded in the police blotter.

Interesting development if this 3-way trade pushes through. I'm just wondering - if Barroca leaves San Mig Coffee, who'll be left to man the point guard slot aside from Jonas Villanueva? I assume J-Vill will finally get his breakout season (assuming he didn't do so three or four years ago) but the interesting question is who'll spell him? I know Barroca is a square peg on a round hole for Tim Cone - he simply doesn't fit the offense of Cone so I'm not surprised he's giving him up. I was surprised though with Urbiztondo's transfer sensing that he was Cone's favorite PG. Had Ross been shipped to San Mig Coffee and not with Global, that would have been more logical since Ross fits Cone's system as well.

Barroca's entry at Meralco also proves that Ryan Gregorio is deadset on his dribble-drive offense to be executed. Barroca fits the bill since he's a less deliberate compared to Ross, bordering to being "reckless" at times. It's a worthy risk though, since Gregorio can now be able to maximize Barroca's individual strength that was mitigated somehow with the strict offensive patterns of Cone. Vanlandingham though fits perfectly in Cone's system and gives him another offensive outside threat supposedly to be provided by Val Acuna. The glaring absence though is a point guard which makes me think that Cone will get someone from the free agent ranks.

Global Port getting Ross would mean they will now have a starting PG in their midst. It will also allow them to move Willie Miller to his more potent #2 position (or interchangeably use him at #1 if needed) where he can score more. But I think the key here is to find someone who can ensure that both Gary David and Miller would be happy. Ross may be the right man for this since he had to contend with Sol Mercado and Mark Cardona at Meralco last season.

Jay, I don't think Ross will fit under Cone's system because he does not have a consistent outside shot.

Ross' cerebrality will make him fit the team well. Ross is the type of player who learns fast and adopts to different situations with ease. He may not have a consistent jumper but he does have great ball sense and high basketball IQ to make up for this.

Thanks for your input. But if Ross goes to Global, they'll now have a legit PG. People have been labeling them as another SMC farm team after they let JV Casio go for an older Willie Miller, a non PG anyway.

True, and since Ross isn't exactly someone who would love to take attempts at the basket, he'll be there to make David and Miller happy playing together. But it may also mean that Global may be ready to go small ball if they try these three together simultaneously. Not really that bad since it's bound to be a hi-octane offense for them. David's production may go down a bit from his usual 25ppg to around 20ppg but Miller will be there to chip in 13-14ppg. Ross' statline may go up in the assists department because of this, probably increasing his apg from 6 to around 8 per game.

Global might have a strong starting unit with Al-Husseini at center, Vic Manuel at power forward and these three guys for the smaller positions. They have a couple of other bigs like Crisano, Adducul, Salvador, Calimag and the rookie Deutchmann - not exactly a recipe for a championship but enough to make them compete. Let's see how Glenn Capacio can mesh these guys though.
