Philippine PBA Trades, Releases, Sign-ups, Rumours (vol. III)

$20k a month is roughly 900k pesos...more than twice the max salary of the pba and probably more than 4 times what meralco is offering him. it would be foolish for him if he doesn't already have investments, savings and businesses set up for his retirement. heck a couple condos for rent, 4 apartments and a mini stop outlet would net him 100k a month...plus he should have bought insurance investments and/or placed in trust or equity funds...those things he should already have in place since he probably earned so much during his more than a decade stay in the pba. that is if they continue their stay here in the country. they might opt to go back to the states though and continue with a normal life, with a normal job there like what some pba players have done.

at the end of the day Asi as a retired PBA player could still earn a much bigger salary as mere employee in Los Angeles than as a mid-level manager in Makati. With his educational background and working experience, let's be honest on how high could he get in the Philippine Corporate ladder if ever.

And as his agent said, its not about the money .... its more about RESPECT. So we do not know what really happened during the negotiations that made Asi and his agent feel disrespected and unappreciated. From the looks of it, they're more than hurt.

i think Asi's reason is valid enough to leave. maybe he is thinking that his previous employer doesn't need him anymore that is why the first offer didn't came when he sought for it.

i think asi got hurt when meralco initially offered him a one year contract. plus also during the charity game, i think meralco didn't support him through sponsorship. im not sure though.

he's still quite lucky, it really goes to show the limited supply of big men we have in our country. at 39 asi is still getting good offers from teams. i really hope that there will be a program for the grassroots development of big men in our country.

well, it's one thing to have a development program..another to have actual big men to teach to. we all know only a handful of pinoys reach 6'9.

i think its just a matter of grassroots recruitment. in the provinces i think there are plenty.

^For all the sacrifices that Asi had given to the Philippines as a National player, he is not a Filipino by blood so we must exclude him from the handful of Pinoys that reach 6'9.

Off-topic: Do you know that Paul Daza, the same guy who told everyone that Asi was a Filipino is currently a governor of a Samar or Leyte Province?

Daza may be a pathological liar but to the Warays, he is their own liar.

well at least he wasn't offered to be a part of coaching staff, I think Asi deserves to have a better contract after announcing that hey will have a new member of the family.

Two players might end up returning
to their respective homes.
There are rumors buzzing that a
LITERALLY EXPLOSIVE PLAYER is
returning home. For it to happen, that
team had to let go of their JAPANESE HERO. The JAPANESE HERO will join
HIGH-FLYING TIGER, who
coincidentally might return to his own
home too.
The HIGH-FLYING TIGER's current team
might end up with this UNDERRATED POWER FORWARD from the team
where the TIGER will end up again.
The UNDERRATED POWER FORWARD
bears the same surname as a star of
the Knickerbockers.

Seigle for Yeo

Baguio for Anthony

that is where the gap started. Asi worked his arse to be in tip top shape despite his age. he works extra hard and does extra training, even paying it by himself just be be in good shape for meralco. yet, when his contract expired, meralco gave him a one year contract in which got asi really disappointed. i really believe he wants to retire with meralco but with the offer they've initially gave him. he was hurt that meralco didn't want him to be part of the family long term.

i dunno, i'm not with asi in this issue...he should have enough saved up by now to get him thru retirement.

I wouldn't want to share what I know, since I am not sure if it is public knowledge or not, but the reason Asi is not as wealthy (at least in terms of money) is because he is "too generous."

By the way, any news on the reported coaching changes?

Don't take things at absolute face value. Asi and his agent are merely squeezing every single peso that could work for them. It's not like they don't have any other options to consider. And because they do, it's not surprising that Asi would want to make Meralco compensate him more for him to stay.

And if it includes a full-time working career with the corporate headquarters after retirement, then it's all fair.

i guess what asi is waiting is that together with his 2 year contract, a perk should be packaged with it that he will be free of charge for his electricity bill until the expiration of his contract :D

Lassiter twists knee, joins Lutz, Pena on Petron injury list
Rey Joble, InterAKTV · Wednesday, September 5, 2012 · 3:56 pm

Over the past couple of seasons, the Petron Blaze Boosters have been bitten hard by the injury bug, with key players missing significant time due to various ailments.

The offseason has not augured well for the Boosters so far, with Marcio Lassiter suffering another injury to join Chris Lutz and Dorian Pena in Petron’s list of walking wounded.

“He just twisted his knee,” San Miguel Corporation executive Noli Eala said about Lassiter’s latest setback. The second-year forward has yet to play a single game for the Boosters, missing all of the Governors’ Cup after being traded to the team after breaking his hand.

“I hope it’s not serious,” added Eala.

Lutz, who also battled injuries in his first year in the PBA last season, is again in sick bay, as is Pena. It hasn’t been the best of starts for new head coach Olsen Racela at the helm of Petron, which traded another key player Dondon Hontiveros last week.

“We lost an important player because of a trade in the first week. Three more down because of injuries this week. Not exactly the kind of start we want,” posted Racela on his Twitter account.

“First practice game vs Rain or Shine tomorrow. Dorian, Chris and Marcio will not play because of various injuries. Hopefully they’ll be ready in time for the opening.”

What more if the rumor Danny S returning home is true? Poor Baculi, he wanted out but was not allowed to join Global.

Unenergized Barako yet to get over Miller loss

BARAKO Bull head coach Junel Baculi admitted his team is far from competitive form following a 103-98 loss to Meralco in a tune-up game between the two teams Wednesday at the Meralco gym.

Baculi noted his big men, especially Doug Kramer and new acquisition Enrico Villanueva, botched several attempts under the basket.

The 6-foot-5 Villanueva, recently acquired from Ginebra in a trade, showed flashes of brilliance in the early stretch of the third period, but more often failed to get back quick enough on defense.

Kramer meantime, settled for jumpers even though Meralco didn’t have veteran center Asi Taulava’s intimidating presence inside.

“We really need to work on our stamina. Kitang-kita naman sa laro na hirap na kami sa dulo,” said Baculi, whose team obviously is still in search of a two-guard scorer to compensate for the loss of two-time MVP Willie Miller in the trade that paved the way for Villanueva's return to Barako Bull.

While the Energy had veterans Ronald Tubid and Sunday Salvacion as well as recently acquired Roger Yap to rotate on the two spot, Baculi admitted the three players are not in the same mold as the prolific 35-year-old Miller.

“Not to demean their talent, pero siyempre, iba talaga yung nagagawa ni Miller sa offense. Hopefully, management can come up with a good trade move in the coming days para ma-compensate namin yung pagkawala ni Willie. Kasi sa front court, wala na naman kaming problema dahil nandiyan na si Rico to help Doug,” added Baculi.

Barako posted an overall win-loss record of 18-24 this past season. The Energy placed eighth overall during the Philippine Cup, but managed to make it to the semifinals of Commissioner’s Cup, where they stretched Talk ‘N Text to a deciding Game Seven in the semifinals.

Sol searching as Bolts dump playbook for free-flowing offense

YAN Gregorio has dumped the playbook in favor of a free-flowing offense which he hopes would turn the Meralco Bolts into one of the most electrying teams in the pro league.

“I’m stopping myself from running controlled basketball,” Gregorio told Spin.ph at the end of a 103-98 win against the Barako Bull in a practice game on Wednesday at the Meralco gym that revealed facets of the kind of offense that Gregorio wants his team to run in the coming season.

“We will instead play basketball based on the instincts of the players. We will try to do away with the regular set plays but we’ll give our players the freedom to execute. And we’ll depend a lot more on the skills of the players, so I think basketball will be much more free-flowing for us.”

The shift should turn the Bolts into one of the most exciting teams to watch in the pro league as it brings out the best in Sol Mercado, Meralco's high-octane scorer whose one-on-one skills were on full display during Smart-Gilas 2.0’s conquest of the Jones Cup championship last month.

Not surprisingly, Gregorio expects Mercado's no-holds-barred style of play to be the focal point of his new offense.

“I expect Sol to be fantastic in this kind of offense. He can break down the defense and easily get into the rack for points. He’ll also be like a kuya to the younger players,” added Gregorio, who has won three PBA titles with Purefoods (now San Mig Coffee) but has yet to come close to one with the Bolts.

Another Bolt expected to benefit from the new system is Cardona, whose unorthodox offense will once again be unleashed come the new season where Gregorio said 100-point productions for the Bolts would be common.

Aside from Mercado and Cardona, Fil-Am rookie Cliff Hodge, a certified bruiser and perimeter player, and newly acquired Ronjay Buenafe are expected to provide the scoring as the Bolts look to improve on their 21-23 (win-loss) campaign last season and hopefully get a shot at a championship.

^ MERALCO/RG has plays?? really? As far as I remember his play is, give it to mac, clear out. give it to sol, clear out. :)

hmmm now I learned a good motivator does not make a good negotiator. sometimes people should just stick to what they do best.

Asi committed to stay, says Bolts' Gregorio

JUDGING from Meralco’s struggle in the paint in a practice game against a bigger and bulkier Barako Bull, the Bolts definitely need veteran Asi Taulava and his 6-foot-9, 245-pound frame if they hope to come up with a stronger showing in the PBA season kicking off on September 30.

Taulava, still without a contract, showed up in street clothes on Wednesday for the pro league’s very first preseason game the Bolts won, 103-98 over the Energy Boosters at the Meralco gym in Pasig City. He spent the game sitting next to new Bolts manager Butch Antonio.

Without Taulava’s imposing presence in the middle, the Energy Boosters easily gobbled up the Bolts’ early 16-point cushion to take a 75-70 lead entering the final period.

The Bolts, though, rode on the high-scoring trio of Mac-mac Cardona, Fil-Am rookie swingman Cliff Hodge and Sol Mercado in the final period to beat a still out-of-shape Barako Bull squad.

“With Asi taking a rest, obviously, we struggled inside. He left a vacuum in the paint. But we’re excited because Asi already made a verbal commitment to play for us again this season,” Meralco coach Ryan Gregorio told Spin.ph shortly after the game.

Antonio had earlier said that management already offered Taulava a two-year contract extension, which the 14-year PBA veteran did not immediately sign as he weighs his options.

Taulava’s lady agent, Sheryl Reyes, said Taulava’s presence in the tune-up game doesn’t mean he has committed to signing the contract extension with the Bolts.

“Asi was there in the tune-up game to simply support Sol Mercado, but we’re still studying the options and looking at the details of the contract offered to Asi,” Reyes said.

According to Reyes, Taulava’s other options outside Meralco include offers from three Asean Basketball League teams as well as from a club team in China’s pro league, Chinese Basketball Association.

But based on what Gregorio said, it appears that it will only be a matter of time before Taulava wears the orange-and-white uniform of the Bolts again.

this is just my opnion but barako traded for miller and now they are having problems with the absence of miller so why in the first place they traded miller for enrico?? oh my... so it just means baculi doesn't have control on his line up changes where in the upper management maybe the reason why they traded miller becoz of the pressure from san miguel...oh my as always... i don't know why the commisioner approved the trade in the first place when he said he wants the league to be balanced when trades are going on.. it just doesnt make sense LOL.
