Mendoza: Kobe here as teacher; trust Azkal thrusts
By Al S. Mendoza

KOBE Bryant and his fellow NBA stars will surely win tonight at the Cubao Big Dome.

Also tomorrow against the Philippine-Smart Gilas Team.

You dispute that and you believe Brian Viloria will knock Manny Pacquiao out in the first round.

Or swear to God you believe Pacquiao can knock Vitaly Klitchsko out, too, in the first round.

It’s that simple.

James Yap and his fellow PBA Stars cannot and will never defeat Bryant & Co. even if Bryant uses only one hand in 48 minutes of action.

The NBA and the PBA are simply worlds apart.

We can be the undisputed king in Asean basketball but look, NBA’s kind aren’t only the best in America but in the entire universe as well.

It will be a mismatch and, easily, Bryant’s band will beat Yap’s crew black and blue.

But still, we will watch the carnage because this is one carnage that will delight us
no end.

That’s why tickets had been sold out Tuesday yet. I don’t have one. Fine. I’ll watch it on TV--with beer in hand. Fine.

We have every right to indulge in fantasy. That is the last remaining luxury of one bereft of true wealth.

For, even if we know of the game’s irreversible outcome, we will still watch it.

This is one time when miracles are non-existent or we will believe it won’t rain in Metro Manila in the wet season.

Actually, it will be a teacher-student thing. It is in that context that we should view the game so that watching it will not give us illusions of grandeur, if not false, utterly bitter, hopes.

Bryant has a doctorate in basketball, Yap a pen and paper to jot down notes.

As to the NBA-Smart Gilas game tomorrow, the Nationals can even have three Douthits and still, they will be mere toddlers in a kindergarten class.

Let’s just sit back, relax and enjoy a classroom oozing with lessons of Harvard stuff in basketball.

As to the Azkal-Kuwait game in Kuwait preceding the NBA series, I have this sneaky feeling we could pull it out of the fire.

Yes, Kuwait is heavily favored to win. But with their big bark and bold bite, the Azkals might yet score another upset.

They’ve it done so many times before. I don’t see why they can’t do it again.

I believe.

Who's the kindergarten now:D:D Suck ur own balls mendoza

5-1 aggregate score (Azkals)< 9 point over Gilas by big names in basketball

anyway I believe our team did achieve something big, you wont see this scoreline when we face the Samurai Blue in the following years.

bagging him would be a long shot since he saw action with Les Bles'and definitely being groomed to be #1 keeper on their line up anyway i have read an article in Rick Olivero's blog that pinoys are on Timnas Indonesia as well.

So far, despite the naturalization of Cristian Gonzales (who is married to an Indonesian by the way) and the calling up of Indonesian-Dutch Irfan Bachdim, the Garuda have resisted the call-ups of others with Dutch blood. But unbeknownst to the public, they also have two players with Filipino lineage in forward Yongki Aribowo and midfielder Muhammad Ridwan, making the Merah Putih a little more variegated than they might want to believe. So why not bring in their Dutch players?

Another huge change is that Firman Utina is now team captain taking over from the popular Bambang Pamungkas.

Lol!

^^^ That reminds me of the 131-27 game of the Philippines vs. Macau Under-18 Basketball Game (forgot what tournament), with which the roster of R.P. was made up by the likes of: Rommel Adducul, Bryan Gahol, Paolo Mendoza, Cholo Medina, <forgot the first name> Gumatay and Allen Glenn Patrimonio among others. That was an all-star lineup in Philippine standards. :D

Klinsmann named new USA manager after Bradley sacking

Former Germany boss Jurgen Klinsmann has been named the new head coach of the United States.

The announcement comes a day after Bob Bradley was sacked following almost five years in charge.

Klinsmann had a distinguished playing career, highlighted by winning the World Cup in 1990 and European championship in 1996 with Germany, but has had only fleeting spells in management, first with Germany and later Bayern Munich.

He has also lived primarily in the United States since retiring from playing, and has frequently been linked with the national team job and vacancies in Major League Soccer.

'I am proud and honoured to be named the head coach of the US Men's National Team,' said Klinsmann, who will take charge of his first match on August 10 against rivals Mexico.

'I would like to thank the US Soccer Federation for the opportunity, and I'm excited about the challenge ahead.

'I am looking forward to bringing the team together for our upcoming match against Mexico and starting on the road toward qualifying for the 2014 FIFA World Cup.'

Klinsmann enjoyed an outstanding playing career that lasted 17 years and included spells with Stuttgart, Inter Milan, Monaco, Tottenham and Bayern Munich.

He scored 47 goals in 108 appearances for Germany and West Germany. He retired from playing in 1998, and took his first management job with Germany in 2004. He led them to third place in the 2006 World Cup on home soil, but stepped down from the role after the tournament.

Two years later, he took charge of Bayern, reaching the quarter-finals of the Champions League, but left after one season.

No details of his contract with the United States have been released.

'We are excited to have Jurgen as the head coach of our men's national team,' said US Soccer president Sunil Gulati. 'He is a highly accomplished player and coach with the experience and knowledge to advance the program.

'Jurgen has had success in many different areas of the game and we look forward to the leadership he will provide on and off the field.'

Klinsmann will be introduced at a press conference in New York on Monday.

Japan's U22 team back in 1999 included Shinsuke Nakamura and Shinji Ono, both went on to have successful stints in the best European Leagues. the quality of our local players isn't any different from a decade ago. even if that youtube clip just shows the highlights, our football NT back then has a hard time closing down attackers much like our Azkals. they just allow too much space for players to create. the only difference is that we have a 6'3 goalie to bail out the defense this time around whenever they screw up.

Azkals get boost from Germany

By Cedelf P. Tupas
Philippine Daily Inquirer 8:23 pm | Thursday, August 18th, 2011

MANILA—Two new Filipino-German players to strengthen the Azkals, a German technical director to assess the country’s football program and an experienced assistant coach for the Philippine football team bound to see action in the Southeast Asian Games.
Azkals coach Hans Michael Weiss, who arrived two days ago from Germany, announced these developments Wednesday night even as he expressed hope of a strengthened football program for the country in cooperation with the German Football Association(DFB).
Weiss was at the Manila Polo Club Wednesday night along with several players to attend a press conference of Azkals sponsor Cortal SQR, which gave the team P500,000 for its campaign in the Long Teng Cup in Taiwan next month as well as the SEA Games in December.
Cortal also gave the Philippine Homeless World Cup Team to Paris financial aid of P200,000.
Weiss said that Fil-German player Ronald Mueller, the second choice goalkeeper of German second division side Duisberg, has already agreed to join the Azkals, while another player, a striker in Kevin Ingreso, will beef up the squad next year after getting clearance from his club, Hamburg.
Weiss also revealed that the DFB is sending a technical adviser in Krautzen Ekhardt in October to make an assessment on the current state of the sport in the country, especially at the youth level.
He added that compatriot, Michael Kruger, who was part of the backroom staff of the Tunisia team that reached the World Cup in 2006, will be arriving this month to join the coaching staff for the Azkals Under-23 squad for the SEA Games.

With Phil and James Younghusband out, Teknika holds clear edge over Smart San Beda

By Cedelf P. Tupas
Philippine Daily Inquirer

MANILA—Teknika tries to make the most out of its manpower edge when it faces Rizal-Smart San Beda Saturday in the first leg of the PFF-Smart Club Championship Final at the Rizal Memorial Stadium in Manila.
With four key players from San Beda, including brothers Phil and James Younghusband, missing the first leg because of suspension, Teknika is fancied to prevail in the 6 p.m. match.
The draw to determine which will be the home team for tonight’s duel was set late yesterday. With the home-and-away format being applied, the team with the most number of goals over the two legs will win the crown. Ties will be broken by the “away” goals rule.
Teknika advanced to the finals after a 2-0 victory over fellow NCR side Pachanga last Wednesday, a day after San Beda nipped Stallions of Iloilo, 2-1.
Paul Concepcion, the wily left winger, and Andres Gonzales, the standout performer in the win over Stallions, will also miss the first leg after incurring yellow cards for the second straight game during the semifinals.

I think its for New Era University's sports complex but still part of the Philippine Arena project. People are clamoring for it to be football specific but I guess its all up to INC call since they want to build a strong sports program.

PHILIPPINES CLINCH VICTORY OVER A HARD WORKING CROATIAN SIDE

PHILIPINES 8 – 5 CROATIA

Philippines clinch victory over a hard working Croatian side.

A large crowd watched a pulsating match unfold in blazing Paris sunshine.

Croatia went close within seconds, a powerfully driven shot from Damir Balaban coming back out after hitting both posts.

The Philippines took the lead within 2 minutes when Janrick Soriano swept in the first goal of the match. Croatia almost hit back immediately but a great save maintained the lead.

We lost to Scotland and Poland by wide margins at the start of the Secondary Stages i believe we have 4 games left and we should win each to better our 25th place finish last year.
