even if we got Jose "The Special One" Mourinho to manage our Azkals, we will still suck against the better Asian teams.

but hey, the thing about European football managers... they're very vocal. Weiss giving these "geniuses" a piece of his mind for being the crabs that they are is normal.

Do we really need this guy to coach us? Lol. :D:p

We need a real professional league. The UFL is doing its job well, but its players do not seem to play football for a living. Some of them have AFP commissions and others have day jobs.

I expect that after these matches, interest in collegiate football will also rise. We might see a bidding war for Iloilo- and Bacolod-based HS footballers similar to the ones being waged for blue-chip NCAA/UAAP rookies.

When will the Philippine Premier League be launched? I think this is the national football league to be sponsored by Mr. MVP.

what's a professional football league without a proper football venue?

Gelora Bung Karno, Bukit Jalil, Rajamangala, The Singapore Sports Hub... our neighbors have footballing venues they can be proud of. Rizal Memorial has been there longer than my late lolo. the only thing special about it is the "nostalgia" factor. without the help of DLSU, Rizal Memorial is a piece of shit venue to hold football matches.

We really need the help of the billion dollar corporations to build and renovate the track/football stadiums. Our football federation doesn't have enough money for that.

Why do some people have such very thin patience. In sports where size doesn't matter (unlike basketball) Philippine football has bigger potential to gain huge success internationally someday..its still under stage of development (some people don't understand)..remember the word patient is a virtue.

According to foreign & local football experts, phil. national football team would take 6-8 years to become a powerhouse in southeast asia and 12-15 years to emerge as among the heavyweights in asian region.

kid's comment who doesn't know football at all..you're just steeping to the low level of what you called fantards with this comment..congratulation, you just level up your intelligence to negative one..

you dont even know me dumbfck
im so tired of the overhyping of our national team...
these fools acting like this the best team ever.
now that the team lost do they still support the team?
we all know they(the girls) follow the team bcos of this teams looks and not bcos they are our national team. and MOST of them supports the team bcos they are winning.
When the team was formed nobody even gives a sh*t, heck nobody even gives a sh*t about the game.

until now some of this fckers still dont know a damn about the game.
Somebody on the azkals fb fanpage commented: "the ref gave a red card, what does that mean?" and someone even asked "who is de jong?" masabi lang na naglike sa national team. and some other bullsht.

I dnt know why u mad at me but lol @ u acting like u d wisest
or maybe youre butthurt bcos youre one of these faggs.
lol just shut it down son

We can't blame these peeps for being impatient. They want instant results Ala instant noodles. Lol. Kidding aside, these kind of people don't even value patience. Just what our fellow poster said before, these kind of people only support our national team/athletes if they're winning. When our athletes/national team starts to lose, they will curse and roast them.

how about our basketball? 8-10 years from now to enter olympics and world championships and become back to the medal?

Azkals '2nd most improved' side in the world

ROY MOORE, GMA News
07/29/2011 | 08:52 PM

The Philippines became the most improved team in the last year, jumping 25 places and boosting their rating by 177 points, based on the current World Football ELO Rankings.

Only Peru has improved more in the last year, rising 41 places and gaining 190 points due to their recent exploits in the Copa America.

As opposed to the FIFA rankings, the ELO rankings take into account the quality of the opposition to gain a more accurate ratings system based on performance.

This means that in FIFA rankings beating Brazil and beating Botswana would give you the same number of points, while the ELO rating system considers that beating Brazil is a much more difficult task and rewards that with more points.

With a complex formula devised by chess Grandmaster Arpad Elo, the winner of a match between two teams will see his ratings improve while the loser’s rating drops depending on the expected result of the match. According to these computations, the Philippines in the last year has been the second most improved side in the world.

Kuwait and the World Cup

It is interesting to note, then, that in these ELO rankings, Kuwait is 60th in the world while the Philippines is at 181st. This may be lower than the FIFA rankings but that's also due to the fact that more teams are rated in the ELO system, 232 compared to 206 countries by FIFA.

The Philippines, therefore, had the chance to upset a team 121 places above them in the ELO world rankings, which would have been an incredible feat. Consider also that Kuwait is ranked higher than any Southeast Asian country so the Kuwait-Philippines match up was a huge signal to the rest of the region—that the Philippines can compete at the highest level in Asia.

Stephan Schrock, a marked man before the game, put the Philippines in front with a thunderous strike from just over 20 yards and the Philippines looked to press when Kuwaiti Fahed Al Ebrahim was sent off. The Philippines eventually lost 5-1 on aggregate.

Yet the Philippines has much to be proud of with stellar performances from Schrock, Rob Gier and Neil Etheridge in particular. Scoring his first goal for the Philippines, the Filipino-German put in a good shift for the team and looked biting in midfield, while several last-ditch challenges from Gier stopped numerous Kuwaiti attacks. Etheridge at goal made several good stops, including a brilliant fingertip save diving to his left in the second half.

Coach Michael Weiss praised the players after the game for their work ethic while thanking the fans and press for their support. When asked about some of the newer players, he singled out Stephan Schrock as a player who is "on another level".

Bringing great work ethic, technique and vision to the team, manager Dan Palami has also previously noted that Schrock has one of the best attitudes of the players, too, despite his obvious skill.

Weiss commented that "even though he was not at his best (Thursday) night he was on a different level. You could see the difference with his incredible goal."

Speaking of the team generally, Weiss is looking forward to the time when the Philippines will have a full set of players to choose from, with injuries and club commitments keeping Denis Cagara, Paul Mulders, Chris Greatwich and others from joining the team. However with such a young bunch of players, he noted that they are a "good group to be developed" and the future looks bright for the second most improved side in the world.

Looking to the future

Though the team has now been eliminated from the World Cup and must wait four more years for the next Qualifiers they can be proud of their performance not only against Kuwait but throughout the last year, as better shown by the ELO ratings.

It was Jaron Genota, a passionate and knowledgeable football fan, who brought these rankings to the attention of the public on Twitter. While FIFA uses a part-ELO based rating system for women's football it is somewhat surprising that it hasn't incorporated it more for the men’s game.

Looking to the future, Weiss set the next target as winning a medal at the SEA Games, believing the Under-23 team has a chance in Indonesia while looking to the AFC Challenge Cup to prove how far the full men's team has come, hoping to reach the semi-finals.

However, the next time Azkals fans will see their team in action will be in September when they compete in the Long Teng Cup against Hong Kong, Macau and host Taiwan, with a good chance of winning the tournament.

Azkals fans are understandably proud of the team and the direction they are going. A heart-thumping show of support from the crowd at the Rizal Stadium lifted the players' spirits after the game and showed the class of Philippine fans, cheering not only for their team when they win but also when they lose, knowing this is when the team needs it most.

The team is progressing at each showing and if they continue in this manner they will continue to climb the World Rankings and compete in the final stages of regional competitions. Using these as platforms to prove themselves not just in Southeast Asia but across the continent, the team is heading in the right direction and the Kaholeros booster squad are right to proclaim in huge banners: "We Believe". - HS, GMA News

how about our basketball? 8-10 years from now to enter olympics and world championships and become back to the medal?

Darn..its tough to give prediction to sports where size does really matter. Unless our genes have mutated and transformed our players to NBA-like skills and height. We could comfortably predict by next year our philippine basketball should be a medal contender in london olympics ;)

Pinoys need PATIENCE..

Pinoys need PATIENCE..

Stick with our current coaching system (open your mind,Weiss knows what his doing!). Let grow with our system and our team, step by step they will go up the ranking at the same time more and more local youngsters improve their football skills. Things to note since I watch the 2 leg match is not much corner kicks and fishing for penalty when inside the box. I always watch a lot of champion league and epl matches and when top defensive team plays, this is mostly they do to produce goal options. I watched Azkals game and they forced always to attack in the front which is very rare opportunity especially when the strikers are marked by the defenders in matches like these. Kuwait defenders will definitely not give up their defensive line thats pure blame to them. Observe top footballers in europe when they must have good footwork skills (they called dribbling skills) that in time of goal crisis they tend to dribble around the box forcing nasty tackles + with a bit of acting to look more painful :) to commit defender with yellow or red card = penalty kick. another is corner kick which is a strong option in producing goals.

OT

OT

More grassroot programs should be in placed immediately to develop-out our local youngsters footballing skills. Notice that most Brazilian players come from poor descent but with football they have chance to be rich. Cheffy Caligdong is a joy to watch I hope we produce more players like him. In fair to our foreign breed players they also are good but footwork skills hmmm i think first :p. Looks ok for ads, but guys this is football where goals or draw is a good result!

Mendoza: Kobe here as teacher; trust Azkal thrusts
By Al S. Mendoza

KOBE Bryant and his fellow NBA stars will surely win tonight at the Cubao Big Dome.

Also tomorrow against the Philippine-Smart Gilas Team.

You dispute that and you believe Brian Viloria will knock Manny Pacquiao out in the first round.

Or swear to God you believe Pacquiao can knock Vitaly Klitchsko out, too, in the first round.

It’s that simple.

James Yap and his fellow PBA Stars cannot and will never defeat Bryant & Co. even if Bryant uses only one hand in 48 minutes of action.

The NBA and the PBA are simply worlds apart.

We can be the undisputed king in Asean basketball but look, NBA’s kind aren’t only the best in America but in the entire universe as well.

It will be a mismatch and, easily, Bryant’s band will beat Yap’s crew black and blue.

But still, we will watch the carnage because this is one carnage that will delight us
no end.

That’s why tickets had been sold out Tuesday yet. I don’t have one. Fine. I’ll watch it on TV--with beer in hand. Fine.

We have every right to indulge in fantasy. That is the last remaining luxury of one bereft of true wealth.

For, even if we know of the game’s irreversible outcome, we will still watch it.

This is one time when miracles are non-existent or we will believe it won’t rain in Metro Manila in the wet season.

Actually, it will be a teacher-student thing. It is in that context that we should view the game so that watching it will not give us illusions of grandeur, if not false, utterly bitter, hopes.

Bryant has a doctorate in basketball, Yap a pen and paper to jot down notes.

As to the NBA-Smart Gilas game tomorrow, the Nationals can even have three Douthits and still, they will be mere toddlers in a kindergarten class.

Let’s just sit back, relax and enjoy a classroom oozing with lessons of Harvard stuff in basketball.

As to the Azkal-Kuwait game in Kuwait preceding the NBA series, I have this sneaky feeling we could pull it out of the fire.

Yes, Kuwait is heavily favored to win. But with their big bark and bold bite, the Azkals might yet score another upset.

They’ve it done so many times before. I don’t see why they can’t do it again.

I believe.

Who's the kindergarten now:D:D Suck ur own balls mendoza
