MANILA, Philippines -- The Azkals made history by becoming the first Philippine team to advance in the second round of FIFA World Cup.

The Filipinos defeated Sri Lanka, 4-0, (5-1 on aggregate) much to the delight of thousands of local football fans who endured the rain just to witness the match at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.

Azkals winger Chieffy Caligdong scored the first goal in the 18th minute to put the Philippine ahead.

He found the back of the net with a strike that caromed off the left post.

Another goal by Azkals striker Phil Younghusband in the 42nd minute made it 2-0 in favor of the Philippines.

The Filipino-British footballer evaded 2 defenders and the Sri Lankan goalkeeper to increase the Azkals' lead.

An assistant match official initially ruled out Younghusband's goal because an alleged foul.

However, the senior referee overruled the sideline official, saying that the Azkal's contact with a Sri Lankan defender was only minimal.

It was Angel Guirado’s turn to score in the second half.

The Filipino-Spaniard scored the country’s third goal in the 50th minute after receiving a through ball from James Younghusband.

Guirado beat the Sri Lankans' offside trap and rounded the goalkeeper to tap the ball in.

Phil scored the fourth goal through a penalty kick in the 56th minute after Stephan Schrock was brought down by a Sri Lankan defender inside the box.

Attacking intent

The Philippines launched attacks right at the kick off as the Sri Lankans struggled under the pouring rain.

Guirado and Phil fired long-range shots that troubled the opposing goalkeeper before Caligdong scored the opening goal.

Schrock was physical against the Brave Reds and was slapped a yellow card in the match.

He was also given a yellow card in the first leg, which means that he will be barred from playing in the Azkals' next game.

Azkals team captain Aly Borromeo was also called for his 2nd yellow card in the qualifier. He is also barred from playing in the next match.

The Filipinos will take on Kuwait in the second round of the qualifiers.

Kuwait have scouted the Philippines for 2 consecutive matches, according to the Azkals media officer Rick Olivares.

Catch the replay of Azkals vs Sri Lanka on Sunday night at 9 p.m. and Tuesday afternoon (July 5) at 4 p.m. on Studio 23. The game will also be replayed on Monday at 5 p.m. on Balls.

Yessir. Good things happen when the intention is also into pure good no evil selfish intentions.
I do hope that businessmen wont dictate football or this national team's fate or else i will suffer like what basketball in our country is experiencing.

football, basketball, artist, vendor,or even a mere keyboard warrior,
We are all one! We are TEAM PILIPINAS!

happy with the 4-0 result, but very skeptic of our chances in the first leg against Kuwait with Schrock and Borromeo suspended. the Azkals still have the half-Danes and Jonsson at their disposal. possibly Jason De Jong if he's fit enough. parking the bus may not be such a bad idea :D

WTF!! stephan shrock won't play against Kuwait! very bad news! we can't win if incomplete team

The first leg will be in Kuwait.

Cagara and Lucena should make their presence felt now... the team needs them on the 1st leg... badly.

If somehow we get a draw or just a one-goal deficit in the away game, it's going to be free-for-all.

Lebanon - Kuwait

pls do watch the whole video :D
enjoy!

Kuwait have been in the World Cup and Olympics, Once an Asian Champion, they have beaten the best teams in Asia like South Korea, Japan and Saudi Arabia. The only question now is, how good they are now? This is by far, the biggest game of the Azkals.

Kuwait is now different. It's not good nor bad team in Asian level. But they better than all AFF teams including champion team.

but the phil azkals team is now better team than AFF suzuki cup roster because of additional players from europe

lebanon football nt is weakest team like laos or cambodia

LOL that ain't true, their team is on the 2nd tier of Asian Football NTs, teams like Malaysia, Singapore and Vietnam are on that same level.

check this page for AFC's classification of each NTs in Asia.

oh sorry yeah. lebanon's same level like AFF powerhouses like thailand, indonesia, singapore, malaysia and vietnam

Kuwait is strong.. This might be the last phase of the Azkals' road to the World Cup.. Hope they prove me wrong..

looks like Aly and Stephan are playing against Kuwait, their yellow cards would not be carried over the next round.

A tweet from Kaya FC

Just heard awesome news @alybor11 and Schrock are both eligible to play in both Kuwait games! Looks like we are going to be in full force!

and a quote from a very respectable sports journalist

‎"The Azkals, though, had five players with yellow cards, with Borromeo and Schrock among the notable players with two bookings, including one each from the home leg.

Both players, however, WILL BE AVAILABLE for the first leg in Kuwait on July 23 since yellow cards are not carried over into the next round." - Cedelf P. Tupas

Al-Azraq has beaten The Socceroos in Canberra during Asian Cup qualifying but lost every group stage game during the tournament proper. they are so used to playing the Asian powerhouses while the Azkals have only beaten Vietnam and a bunch of lower-ranked Asian countries.

this isn't an even match it will be a historical upset if ever the Azkals progress. otherwise, those who don't know sports but make a living either writing or talking about it and think the Azkals just have to do the same thing they did against Sri Lanka to win will jump off the bandwagon and start bashing them like the crab heads they are.

Stuff I posted before:
Kuwait is going to be a wicked tough matchup as when they play their best football, they are one of the top 7-10 sides in Asia. They qualified for the 2011 Asian Cup in 2009. Here are their results:

Kuwait 0-1 Oman
Kuwait 1-0 Australia
Kuwait 2-1 Indonesia
Kuwait 1-1 Indonesia
Kuwait 2-2 Australia
Kuwait 0-0 Oman
Record: 2-3-1 (W-T-L)
Was 2nd in the group with 9 pts, behind Australia who went 3-2-1 (11 pts).

But then they lost all their matches in the 2011 AFC Asian Cup
Kuwait 0-2 China
Kuwait 1-2 Uzbekistan
Kuwait 0-3 Qatar

Recent friendlies for Kuwait:
bt. Iraq 1-0 March 29, 2011
T Jordan 1-1, March 26
T Bahrain 0-0 February 14

@rickyolivares: Just got official word from AFC, Schrock and Aly will be suspended for the next match. I have the official communique from AFC/FIFA.

this is bad news, hoping for Lucena and Jonsson to come and play for us. Its hard to imagine our captain would not be there in the pitch to lead the joust against Kuwait, we're left with Caligdong as co-captain of the team.
