@paolylo : saying that Azkals run is chamba is illogical and utter nonsense. have you seen their games?

@Kiko : can we please stop comparing our national teams? It's a topic wise Filipinos should not talk about

ok. sori guys!
i take it back! coz its the "chamba" word brings me to boil!

on to topic: CONGRATS to AZKALS.. i hope this "CHAMBA" fever continue!
good luck on the game this march!

Definitely in the 2nd leg, the Mongolians turn to attack to score as many as they needed to win. Our turn to park the bus in front of our goal for a solid defense with some counter attacking plan. But I believe the Weiss man already have a plan.:)

well it did raise my temper up a notch.

Anyway, it is really a degrading term.

It's like saying that the win over Vietnam and draw over Singapore was a fluke. Winning despite being front of 40k Vietnamese fans, against the defending champs, bombarded by a shot on goal every 5 minutes and getting rare opportunities and making two, defending like Trojans, and not having 30% of the possession can be attributed to this "chamba".

wth.

We only need a draw to advance so I'm guessing his strategy will be mostly defense.

yes i have. infact i've been watching them way before they were called the Azkals. our players have gotten taller and more physical... that's about it. i assume you also saw their games in the Suzuki Cup, but i bet you weren't paying attention to the overall quality of their play. i saw 5 matches where our players compensated their lack of a good first touch, lack of fitness, shortage of pace, and poor passing with an unorthodox strategy: park the bus and counter-attack. it's the only way they'll able to do anything against better competition. it's how Greece won Euro 2004, it's how the USA made it far in the 2002 World Cup... chamba. it's not necessarily a bad thing, but that's the beauty of football. you can suck at several things but still get a positive result. that's the real story of the Azkals.

come to think of it, how Mongolia was able to limit the Azkals to just 2 goals was exactly how we managed to get to the semis in the Suzuki Cup (Mongolia just didn't have anyone who can attack). i don't know about you, but i was pissed that the score was just 1-0 for the most part. the 2nd was consuelo for being persistent. better teams would threaten to score.

Very good argument. As a matter of fact, Coach Weiss even said that we could've scored more goals.

I don't think so its a chamba win.. more like of they (Azkals) dominated the entire game but they are not that fortunate enough to make a lot of goals(credit to the son of Genghis Khan; their goal keeper). I would love to see the azkals doing the same thing against SEA competitors, let us see if we can do it, I think they can.

But we should also make a thread about Philippine basebal on all the team sports this is the sport that we got the highest World Ranking.

backread and the argument was about the Suzuki Cup. Mongolia is a different story because they're no where near the level of the teams in that tournament. our Azkals could afford to attack at will because Mongolia didn't even try to keep possession. once they get the ball, they launch a long pass and pray someone makes a mistake... and i think they were able to catch the back four sleeping a couple of times.

i also wanna see the Azkals dominate the best SEA countries but we've only started getting better. if the SEA games started today, our U23 team won't medal even with Etheridge, de Jong, and Simon Greatwich there.

pati dito mag aawai kayo

anyway our top strikers like Chad Gould, Chris Greatwich and Roxy Dorlas was not there. Expect more fire power for the team when Cagara, Lucena and Schrock are fielded in for future competitions.

Okay lads,

Any predictions for the 2nd leg in Mongolia?

I am predicting: Azkals 1 - Mongolia 1. The Mongolians will score around the 80th minute.

It's really important for the lads to come up with a goal in the first half to put pressure on the Mongolians and also this will even push the Mongolians to come out to play thus, possibly affecting their defense.

I believe that the Azkals shouldn't rest on their laurels and "close shop" rather they should still try to get an away goal.

The Mongolians will go all out and will definitely NOT "close shop" thus, the Azkals will have more space to score an away goal.

Well done Azkals in ensuring that the visitors didn't score an away goal.

Also, could someone please explain:

Chieffy Caligdong gets a lift from a teammate after scoring the Azkals’ first goal against Mongolia in Bacolod yesterday. The Philippines beat Mongolia, 2-0. JUN MENDOZA

| Zoom Welcome to philstar.com's live updates on the AFC Challenge Cup game between the Philippine Azkals and the visiting Mongolia squad at the Panaad Stadium in Bacolod City. Make sure to refresh this page regularly for updates on this highly anticipated game.

The updates are arranged from bottom to top.

-----------------------------------------------

GAME IS OVER! AZKALS WIN 2-0!

(93:00) Another goal for Philippines by Phil Younghusband! Azkals up 2-to-nil!

(90:00) Another player out for Mongolia. Redshirts down to 9 men.

(83:47) Overwhelming defense by the Azkals. Mongolians having a hard time getting ball possession.

(75:00) Another Mongolian down in pain and out on a stretcher. 2nd half is being played mostly on the Philippines' side. Great offensive attacks by Azkals, that's what you call aggressiveness

(71:00) Keep your cool Ian Araneta!

(69:00) Mongolia's goalkeeper is the man for the redshirts right now! He's already made a handful of good rejections!

(66:22) Tough night at the office for Mongolian goalkeeper. Too many attempts left and right!

(61:20) Hand use by James Younghusband. Looks like a genuine goal at first look. Good catch ref!

(58:30) Ian Araneta almost scores a goal. Good save by the Mongolian keeper.

(54:06) Phil Younghusband's too close to the goal but kicks too high.

(48:30) Some dull plays. Philippines still leads 1-0.

Second half under way!

Halftime stat: Philippines had 7 goal attempts. Mongolia had 2

FIRST HALF IS HISTORY! CALIGDONG IS THE MAN!! Azkals lead 1-0

(42:34) Goal for Caligdong! Phl leads 1-0!

(38:00) Ian Araneta's header way off the mark.

(36:00) Not enough power in Gener's kick, Mongolia's goalkeeper catches it with ease. Teams still scoreless.

***With No. 9 out of the game, Mongolia is down to 10 men.

(28:12) James Younghusband is down but picks himself up. He's clutching his left arm.

(22:50) Say goodbye to Mongolia's No. 9! He got a third yellow card.

(22:47) Both teams have already missed several goal attempts.

(18:04) Good side throw in by Philippines but no goal conversion. Both teams still scoreless.

(14:10) No. 9 of Mongolia gets second yellow card. One more and he's out.

(13:47) Mongolians showcasing good deflections. This is going to be a gruelling match.

(10:50) Mongolia playing good defense so far. Azkals taking their time in crossing the ball.

(8:40) Philippines misses another goal attempt.

(4:30) Aly Borromeo's head strike misses. Way above the goal.

(4:20) Feeling-out period for the teams. Both squads still scoreless.

(1:00) Philippines almost scores goal. Intense match!

Last-minute huddle by both squads

National anthem of Mongolia being played. Philippines' Lupang Hinirang next.

Both teams taking the pitch. Mongolia squad dons red jersey. Azkals are in white.

Player introductions are underway. Know your Azkals! Just a few minutes before game time.

Tremendous crowd at the jampacked Panaad Stadium. Camera flashes everywhere. Fans with face paints are among the crowd standouts.

Mongolia isn't really an active team. Their last international outing was in 2009 versus Macao.

The Philippines is currently ranked 152nd by the FIFA. Mongolia is at 182nd place.

Warmup time for both squads.

Did someone from Mongolia really get 3 yellow cards?

Was the ref drunk?

What on earth was going on?

This was the same thing that happened back in the 2006 World Cup match between Australia and Croatia, when one of the Croatian players (who was actually born and raised in Australia) was given 3 yellow cards.

Everyone was laughing their heads off and that ref was hammered not only by the media but also FIFA.

Another windfall in store for Phl XI
By Joaquin Henson (The Philippine Star) Updated February 12, 2011 12:00 AM Comments (15)

BACOLOD CITY ,Philippines – Air 21 chairman Bert Lina has pledged P20 million on top of Smart’s P80 million commitment to support the Philippine Football Federation (PFF) over the next 10 years as Azkalmania continues to mesmerize the country in a resurgence of interest in what is called the beautiful game.

Lina and his wife Sylvia were at Panaad to witness the national football team’s 2-0 thrashing of Mongolia in the opener of their Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Challenge Cup qualifying home-and-away series here Wednesday night. The Linas were among over 20,000 fans who packed the venue in an emotional display of national pride.

Smart Sports director Patrick Gregorio confirmed Lina’s pledge.

“Mr. Lina asked how much is Smart’s commitment and after I replied P80 million, he quickly told me Air21 will join Mr. (Manny) Pangilinan in the effort and promised P20 million to bring the total amount to P100 million,” said Gregorio.

The P80 million war chest will be earmarked for the Azkals’ development program and the creation of a Premier League.

Gregorio explained that the Premier League will not compete with the United Football League (UFL), a two-division circuit now on its third season. “We envision the Premier League to involve only eight teams – the top two finishers of the UFL and the top two teams of Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao,” said Gregorio. “We will gather the eight teams and hold a competition to determine the national champion.”

Gregorio said the P80 million budget will not include what Smart plans to spend for merchandising and the UFL.

He said if all parties come to terms, Smart will support three UFL clubs – Kaya of Santi Araneta, Loyola of Randy Roxas and Union of Charlie Cojuangco.

there's no such thing as chamba in football..can you see how big is the field, how many opponents there are in the field. to score a goal, you need a lot of skills, strategy and a bit of luck..luck and chamba is different..you can have all the luck in the world but without skill and strategy, you can't score in that field with eleven opponents on..

i hope azkals will win in mongolia... etheridge, gretwich(dunno the spelling) and rob gier are unsure to participate...

yes, there will be good teams with good players that will win most of the games. but chamba in football happens most often than other sports. how many times i have encountered a team controlling majority of the possesions have more attempts on goal but still loses the game(can call it chamba explain since most of the pundits can't get reasonable explanations why the big team lost).

hit the cross bar? own goal? penalty kick? penalty shoout outs. not to mention, football referees are the worst in all of sports making awful and controversial desicions almost every game.

Steven Gerrard did dive in Istanbul 2005. chamba.

and that was one of his greatest goals ever...

I agree with you.. there's nothing wrong about chamba in football... it doesn't degrade anything... that victory against Vietnam last December was a chamba and there's nothing wrong nor take anything away from what the Azkals did in that game...
