You and P-Noy can make it happen
Thank God, they did not try to build the national football team, namely the Philippine “Azkals,” the way affluent patrons have been blindly trying to assemble a national basketball squad for full-scale international wars.
The Azkals, who celebrated Filipino grit and grace in their amazing stint in the Suzuki Cup, have shown it can be done.
The Azkals headed for war in hostile Indonesia over the weekend armed mainly with patriotic dedication.
Terribly uncertain how far they could go in the tournament semifinals, the Azkals did not bother to take along a stable of apologists to the battlefield.

OK, the Azkals dropped both their matches in Jakarta, following a tantalizing stint that had pushed them to the Suzuki Cup semifinals.
But, unlike the imported coach of the ever-failing Smart-Gilas national basketball team, the Azkals did not finish groping for alibis.“No secret, this team played solidly as one and worked as hard as it could,” said national football coach Simon McMenemy.
The Azkals drew both fear and respect from their seasoned foes, who were endlessly egged on by a 80,000-strong crowd of fanatical followers.
An amazing assembly of native stars and Filipino-Europeans, they failed to advance to the final, now to be contested by Indonesia and Malaysia.

They indeed fell short of their main aspirations.
But in the process, the Azkals apparently unearthed something greater.
It’s like this: Unlike the Smart Gilas basketball adventurers, who often melted and got lost under pressure, the Azkals always rode on an enviable national core and character in the thick of battle.
In the process, they’ve unwittingly exposed a corruption which all these years have bogged down Philippine sports.

Pardon this, please, but after all has been seen and said about the Azkals, it’s now our turn to help fortify what these gallant crusaders have established.
Now that the Azkals have opened our eyes, it’s our duty to help the country get rid of this crippling blind faith in basketball.
While basketball, despite the debilitated, fruitless years, continues to be embraced here like religion, there should now be a shifting of faith and priorities.* * *
You see, this could be a little exaggerated but, after the bright revelations of the past few days, it must now be clear how we’ve all these loss-loss years been worshiping a false god in basketball. It’s time to turn a new leaf, make things happen.
In fact, if President Aquino is to make true of his crusade against corruption, he should find and use ways to make football more accessible and embraced by the masses.
It’s not easy but it can be done (proposals due in my next column).
After the false gods have been exposed, now is the time to move away from the fancy, shallow doggone world of basketball—Asong Ulols—into the true win-win football path of the loveable Azkals.
