Singapore vs Philippines 1:1 in Suzuki Cup

Philippines' Chris Greatwitch equalised in injury time to end the match 1-1 after some slack defending from the Lions.

Singapore next plays Myanmar in their second Group B match on Sunday.

Singapore started their ASEAN Football Federation (AFF Suzuki Cup) with a 1-1 draw against Philippines in Hanoi, Vietnam.

Three-time winners, Singapore, had plenty of possession and goal-scoring opportunities but lacked the finishing touch to put the match beyond Philippines.

Despite Singapore controlling majority of the possession, Philippines still had the occasional chance at the Singapore goal.

The Lions finally broke the deadlock in the second half with Aleksandar Duric making it 1-0 with a fine header from Noh Alam Shah's cross.

The Lions missed several chances to extend their lead and were made to pay for their profligacy in front of goal.

Singapore 1
Philippines 1

HANOI - HAVING won their last 11 games against the Philippines with an aggregate score of 38-1, Singapore were left embarrassed by a 1-1 draw yesterday that put their AFF Suzuki Cup progression in jeopardy.

The Lions can still get their campaign back on track with a win this Sunday over Myanmar, who were thrashed 1-7 by Vietnam in the other Group B match at Hanoi's My Dinh Stadium.

But the draw against the Philippines will put pressure on the Lions, who were made to pay after missing chance after chance before Chris Greatwich equalised in the fourth and final minute of stoppage time.

Noh Alam Shah, Shahdan Sulaiman, Khairul Amri and Shahril Ishak were all guilty of missing gilt-edged chances that were either kept out by goalkeeper Neil Etheridge or directed off-target.

'There were many situations where players were in position to shoot but took extra touches,' Lions coach Raddy Avramovic later rued.

Final score 1-1

Singapore scored a goal via the Caucasian guy early in the second half. They held on 1-0 until injury time. The announcers kinda conceded the win. Then the Azkals got a break, younghusband was 1 on 1 on the side then went to the goal kicked it, miss but the teammate scores the goal via putback/pass.

sorry I'm not familiar with football terms.

Not actually a miss, its more of a fast break play where you pass the to your open teammate. In football terms, you call it a cross :)

Why there is no "Philippine Flag" on the AZKALS uniform? Are they not representing PHL?

It has been noticed that all other SUZUKI participants having flag on their uniform....

its there, just check out their right sleeves.

I am referring to their playing uniform...I had watched the game against Singapore last night, there is none.

Seen also the footage/youtube when they play in Laos last month, no flag on their jersey as well.

neil etherridge has a flag on his tee :D

whats the point of putting the flag of your country if you're already representing it in an international tourney?

???????? Are they commercial team?

It is a standard for a national team in any sports to have a flag on jersey/uniform of the country that you are representing.

See the first picture at this link before the Singapore Game last night.

If they are a commercial team then they wouldn't be called Philippine national team isn't it... look at Smart Gilas... our plagiarizing sportswriters are too dumb to call the team, Team Pilipinas or Philippine national team because they prefer the commercialized name Smart Gilas Pilipinas..

Our football team, on the other hand, is called Philippine national football team or just like any other national teams with nicknames "Azkals".. not the name of their sponsors...

Beside, so what if they don't have Philippine flag in their uniform... they're still the national team.. maybe PFF stupidly thought its wise to put their logo instead of the flag... one of Martinez's remnant legacies before he was ousted..

Yes it has.. but whether if there's a Philippine flag in their uniform or not... does it change everything... obviously, this is not the fault of the team but of the PFF and its not even a big deal... national teams change or modify the design of their uniforms each tournament.. who knows next international tourney their uniforms have Philippine flag in it...

Its not even an issue... although, I hope they change their uniform and put the Philippine flag... PFF logo is just inappropriate and a waste of space...

[Yes, Smart Gilas have Philippine flag but our media are still too dumb enough to call the team, Team Pilipinas or Philippine national team:p:p]

Freedom,

if you put a flag on their jersey, would that improve their gameplay? would that say they are more patriotic then ever?

It's hard to please a so-called purist. Maybe he's bothered that many of national footballers have foreign blood (see his posts in the PBA forum about Fil-Ams being "half-hearted" etc) and wants constant affirmation of the country they're playing for.

I bet he'll campaign to replace Etheridge as GK just because he's "just" half-Pinoy.

The home-grown pinoys are more half-hearted than their foreign-bred counterparts. Lol.

This shows that Philippine football is not organize ..... there still some mess that need to clean-up?

Imagine, national team without a flag on their playing jersey.....What type of organization is that:eek:...games are covered by TV......... and they have no identity:eek:

have you seen the jersey of Indonesia, Laos and Malaysia? All of their jerseys even doesnt fly their country's flag. My Bruneian friend how come your team didn't even tried to play in the qualifiers? I heard your Football Federation was suspended, would that mean your Association is also unorganized?
