any thoughts on the comments of Sen. Francis Tolentino about the naturalized players playing as locals in the PBA?

This is long overdue. Hope the PBA implements it but the naturalized players will only be playing on lower ranked teams as they are visibly handicapped.

The concern with this is obviously parity, where the most common issue raised is Ginebra possibly rostering Brownlee + another import. Moreover, a team in essence can even roster two or more naturalized players if the rule will be straightforward in identifying NP's as locals (imagine a team with Brownlee, Boatwright and Kouame + an import during import conferences--not impossible btw).

With this, the solution is obviously a creative policy that can mitigate the concerning scenarios above. But I cant see any incentive for any PBA stakeholder to push through with a complicated policy.

This is too much of an advantage. A compromise would be to allow a second Asian heritage import along with NPs.

For me, allow naturalized players in the PBA but they are still classified as such. In lieu of naturalized players, teams can sign foreign student-athletes or Asian players. There should be only one slot available for the naturalized player, foreign student-athlete and Asian import. Getting one excludes the other two.

Its going to be hard to implement for naturalized players to be able to play in the PBA. Right off the bat the main issue is how can they be integrated into the league. Do you make them go through the draft and if so I think it would hurt Gilas because Brownlee at Ginebra and with Tim Cone certainly helps in maintaining their familiarity and chemistry. Or do you make them as direct hires and if so that would be unfair for the rest of the league since the already stacked corporate teams always win the bidding wars.

They should not go to the draft. Just sign them the same way how teams sign imports.

How about parity, same issue people are saying the reason of low game attendance of fans.

It's the fault of the team if they get a dud FSA/AI/NP player. When you are given an opportunity, take it and get the best out there.

Draft is forced. Just signing them gives teams a freehand.

That will only means that JB or Boatwright will go to SMC team and will make them even stronger. Which make the league unbalance. Which is the complain of people. Alot more bad press for PBA

Well, the challenge is up to other teams. That's why teams have scouts.

Direct hiring is not new to the PBA and we all know what happened.

and it's an onion on the part of the league because the storyline at that time is strictly within the backyard of the league

and not beyond of it, if only they include in the narrative about Philippine National Team and the advent of Basketball without borders and globalization at that time

maybe issues like that should already been resolve...

lack of foresight, being insulares minded, allergic to innovations really takes it's toll on those old timers.

now fast forward, the PBA are now gradually opening up it's jurassic gates,

they are now pro-active in the National team, inviting foreign club team for the past two seasons to play like Bay Area and Eastern,

actively participating in the EASL tourney among others.

so as a fan and observer, it seems that the trajectory of the league are now gradually towards globalization

because that's really the paradigm nowadays and sadly, the Grandpa are not totally(?) warm to embrace it

that is why the league was way beyond the paradigm compared to it's Asian counterpart like the B. League among others.

for it's 50th Season they should really adapt some changes and innovations to cope up with the international standard

the so-called "New World Order of Global Basketball".

they should really cast out that so-called "Grandpa Attitude" if they really want the league to be relevant to the international basketball community.

Let's have 1 World Import and 1 NP/FSA( who must show a diploma/Asian Import(Local FIBA). Lets have 1 Unlimited height and 1 6"5 and below to avoid our bigs to be totally left out. In this scenario Brownlee can team up with a big WI while Boatwright and AK must have 6"5 below WI. FSA like Malick Diouf will team up with Unlimited height WI.
The parity with these scenario will not suffer a lot and it will give opportunity for FSA's to show their worth. Also, having 2 imports per team will lead to expansion as a remedy for dislodging Pinoys of their playing time. This is the answer for Chua's remark of Panu n makakalaro Pinoy kung puro Imports

Arvin Tolentino is the best Local player right now in the PBA, even Eastern cant handle him.

That will not lead to expansion. We only have few Congloments willing to finance a PBA team similar to how SMC and MVP can.

Are you guys willing to pay maximum of 20K per game day for PBA tickets similar to BLeague. Just asking

I think PBA teams on average is the oldest within East Asia… yes 25 or 26 years old rookies are typical when players on that ages in rival leagues in the region are already veterans…We have a larger proportion of over 35 year oldies than our East Asian neighbours.

Oh yeah. In fact only 1 PBA-based player in the last Gilas roster in the last FIBA window, is under 30 y.o. ( Oftana at 28). The next best PBA players that could crack future rosters are of the same age bracket. Malonzo ( 28) and Tolentino ( 29)
