I know it's a rebuilding phase, but I kind of like this Pao team. Might end up half as costly as some other teams, but just as efficient.

It's not really a rebuilding phase though. The youngest players getting real minutes are Pappas and Giankovits and they are 24. When Nelson returns Bochorides will stop getting his 5 minutes and the young centers will never see a minute either. This is another one or two year team, tops.

The truth is somewhere in the middle. There is the Greek league as well, where there is also Charalampopoulos playing. Even Diamantakos and Koniaris have played. And if the young ones improve during the season, there is no telling that they won't get their minutes.

What's also being said off the record is that Ivanovic has made a very good impression to the players.

Pao is one of the positive surprises this season. But even though the teams is in a rebuilding phase, the reality is that it has to be done in two phases. First, Fotsis and Diamantidis will have to show Pappas and Giankovic how to carry the team, while the other youngsters can only have some minutes in the Greek league. After Fotsis and Diamantidis retire two years from now, Pappas and Giankovic will be 26, while Bochoridis, Diamantakos will be 21-22 and the current 17 year olds will be 19-20. This will be the basis of the Pao team of the next decade. Though the truth is that we don´t know how some of these very young players will evolve.

The truth is that Pao has lost two years with Pedoulakis at the helm of the team, but there was really not much local talent around.
For now though, with DD, Fotsis, Mavrokefalidis, Pappas, Giankovic and even Bochoridis getting some minutes. The team does have some local talent to satisfy the fans. Ofcourse one never knows, perhaps this team can surprise us.

The big change from this season on seems to be that we will rely on our offense instead of our defense that used to be our weapon from 1999 till last year. It's not that Ivanovic doesn't know that defense wins titles, but it's obvious that there is more talent offensively.

In the news, let's mention that Blums earned himself a contract for the rest of the season, with the team keeping the right to renew him for next year. For those that don't follow our team, you should know that with his 3 point abilities and his first name (Janis) resembling a Greek name (Yannis) he has already become a fan favorite and kind of a cult icon. :)

DeMarcus Nelson is expected to arrive in Athens today and start practicing with the team. He is expected to start playing from the next year on.

Nelson is a good player, but not particulary my type of a playmaker. He'll definately excell with his defense, while if I were Ivanović I'd seriously consider running offense through someone else most of the time.

This year's Panathinaikos needs him for his defensive skills, so he'll be pretty useful believe me.

This team lacks lots of good players for next year

Tall rotation is a joke

Why they fired him?

Is there info about relationship with players/management?

They lost to Olympiacos last night (in OAKA), meaning they've now lost 4 league games and in Euroleague they had a 13-15 record overall. Not enough use of the young players plus some strange in game decisions which were mentioned by posters here during the playoffs.

Not sure about the relations with players and management but I guess some of the Greek posters here will know more.

Blame it on the coach and Spanoulis, instead of the real problem: lack of fixing a team.

... the real problem: lack of fixing a team.
What do you mean by that?

It seems that the big problem of PAO is Gianakopoulos junior. He is damaging the image of the team constantly and that is more important than one more or one less cup. Is there any chance to bring a serious coach (like Itoudis or Obradovic) to the team? I think not, for obvious reasons. They wouldn't come for any amount of money because they have self respect.
I don't like Aggelopouloi bros neither but they are some clicks less ridiculous than Dimitrakis.

Ivanovic had irritated many PAO fans with his "strange systems" during this season. I was one of them. It's not a conspiracy, there is no manipulation from the media or anything like that. Simply, he could not take the optimum of the given roster. No one was expecting miracles with so many inexperienced or 2nd class players, but he managed to make them look worse than they really are. Whoever has watched PAO's games in EL understands what I'm saying.

Indeed, a very poor rotation inside the paint. That's why they only made some good wins by shooting the lights out in OAKA.

There is no comparisson I believe. Aggelopoulos bros are fun to watch, when they are celebrating it's like watching two happy boys, they bring a smile to the third party watching.
Giannakopoulos junior is like watching a spoilt brat with a machine gun, he makes everybody feel wierd.

I find it strange that you can place them in a comparisson frame.

Let me remind you their whining about the refereeing whenever they lose a game (or a title) against PAO. The inflamatory declarations from time to time. The new low that they established when they tried to win the game vs PAO in the cup competition, using cheap legalistic tricks. Ridiculous and sad imo.
They have unsportsmanlike behavior but in Greece that seems to be no problem. Anyway they don't look so bad because of Dimitrakis although they are hooligan-friendly presidents too.
