Oded Katash is the new coach of Maccabi Tel Aviv!

Only one day after Neven Spahija's resignation, the management of the team has decided to give the keys to former Maccabi's superstar - Oded Katash (his team Galil Eliyon took 3rd place in Israeli Premier league this season). As per the plan, he'll work together with veteran coach Zvika Sherf who will become the professional manager of the team.

As "One", "Sport5", "Walla" and "Liga" reported, Sherf will be GM but not above Kattash.

If it is like this, looks like Bynum will stay in Maccabi due Kattash likes him, not as Sherf.
 
Not sure I understand the authority of Sherf in the team. Anyway next season will be very interesting.
 
Katash is an interesting idea, but Sherf...I don't know...
I don't see him just letting Katash do his job, he will probably interfere when he realizes that Katash is not coaching exactly as Sherf would like him to...I just doubt that Sherf is the kind of person Katash, or other young non-orthodox coach will be able to get along with.

Go Katash, im sure he ll do a great job. As long as the board helps him by allocating some more funds.
 
David Bluementhal was mentioned as a possible summer signing. I hope Bluementhal is more of an insurance policy if Caspi struggles rather than a first option.

Bluthental is stronger (if not faster) than Caspi. He has much better 3pt shot and better defense. I don't think Caspi could defend against Tanuka Bird - Bluthental eliminated him in one game against Zalgiris. Bluthental can play together with Eliyahu - switching 3/4 offense/defense - Caspi can only play 3 when Eliyahu on court...

And it seems that Oded prefers keep Caspi one more year in Galil anyway...:cool:

As it seems from the first week of this new crew, the opposite is true: Baston (who should be one of the best PFs in Europe next year) won't sign due to his financial demands ($1.5M). Arnold also left for similar reasons. The management lowers the expectations regarding next season ("F4 is not an objective"), and their preferred players for next season are the "hungry" ones - a different name for cheaper ones...
 
They probably realised that it will be extremely hard for a non-Spanish team to qualify for F4 next season, as it takes place in Madrid and they won't bother to improve the team's squad. Will Vujcic stay for sure? Which European club can afford Baston at 1.5m anyway?

LOL! Unless Casspi shows major improvement and consistancy, don't hold your breath. Bluthenthal isn't perfect, but he is a proven scorer (and can play D when he feels like it).

Bluthenthal is good but not as good as you claim. If he was Maccabi would give a legitimate effort to sign him. Sadly, Maccabi has reconsidered on releasing Boytoy

Vuicic stays for sure.
Baston has been offered $1.4M per year from Real, and $1.5M per year from TAU. That's why he can afford demanding these amounts.

The more I think of it, the more it hits me that the signing of Katash & Sherf was quite a cinical act from the team's management. All the signs show that they are not willing to participate in the budgetary feast of the leading European clubs. This is legitimate. The thing is they have announced that they weren't going for the F4 this year. Now, Spahija was officially released due to his "poor achievements" this season, and not reaching the F4 in particular, so what gives? It seems that the only reason for releasing him was the recognition that yet another season with him would certainly lower the number of subscribed spectators next season. Bringing Katash (and Sherf to some extent) who is very much identified with Maccabi, and popular among the fans as well, should lower the risk of this happening.
 
I can understand this tactic from a economic, management, marketing point of view. It will be extremely difficult for any non-Spanish club to qualify for next F4 (including giants such as CSKA, Pana etc.), so why not save some funds to use it better next year? (When is Tel Aviv taking a F4 anyway, i think its about time).

Maccabi could qualify for F4 even this season, but they got CSKA in the quarter finals, if they got Malaga or Dynamo for example i'm sure they'd made it.

Signing Katash shows (imo) ambition, vision and smart thinking. I can already see Katash turning into something like Giannakis (in coaching).
As for Zvi, i think he was put there just to make up the lack of experience from Katash and take any responsibilities on him.

So, for me, a team's in a transition period priority should be keeping the players, rather than trying to sign new expensive players, ok they didn't do it last season due to players' ambitions to play in NBA but they are doing it now.

from the economic point of view 99% of basketball clubs in europe is overhyped, since the incomes are despicable compared to the money they're investing...
Maccabi is not one of them, with good incomes from ticket sales and TV rights they might be one of the most profitable european club, since I do think most of the "big's" barely generate 15-20% of invested money into club's incomes.
And imho it's the only healthy way not to rush in a spending spree, but spent to the extent you're able to...

With financial stability, spending within the limits, and a long term plan and long term team building such team can compete for F4 as well... imo the only mistake Maccabi did, was not starting with this strategy this season already.
Calvin will be glad to hear this: Nikola +3 americans, and than later sign young israelis, it won't pan out in the short term, but it would definately pan out in a matter of 3-4 years- the question is wheater Maccabi is willing to wait for it and maybee suffer one bad season due to it...

I'm not surprised after douai. How bad has american basketball devolved. America's best wasn't even competative.
 
Matiz & Arkadios, your points are valid for almost any team but Maccabi. However, Maccabi is an unusual team in many senses; one of them is the insatiability of the crowd and media for success. This turns Maccabi's entire system into a constant pressure cooker (it will be interseting to see Katash who is known as a sensitive person under these circumstances). Now, the management could have released much of this pressure by declaring the forthcoming season as a building season (as they should have IMO), but they are afraid that this would decrease the fan base, so they transmit mixed messages - Mizrahi tells that the F4 is not an objective on the one hand, and Sherf says they aim to win the EL on the other hand (add this to the releasing of Spahija due to his achievements as well). By doing so, it feels like the management tries to hold both ends of the stick.
 
Maccabi is going to perform better than last year. Eliyahu is an improvement over Arnold and Caspi is a definate improvement over boytoy. Burstein is one more year to recover from injury. Halperin is only going to improve now Spahija is gone. Maccabi still has one of the best centers in the euroleague but Vujcic does lacks toughness in the post.
 
Well, i believe that Maccabi fans will face Katash differently than Spahia (or any other coach) in some failures because they see him as one of their own. I believe one of the reasons they hired him was that, he will work as a shield for the team. And Zvi will be the helmet :)
