I wouldn’t call it "luck" when a coach takes over a talented team and turns them into a dynasty. Talent is one thing, but sustaining dominance and instilling a championship mindset? That’s on the coach. You don’t win NCAA titles by just giving pep talks.
Coach Frankie might not be your typical Xs-and-Os clipboard genius, but he knew how to maximize the strengths of his players. His system wasn’t flashy, but it was disciplined, efficient, and effective. You could actually see the identity and grit in his teams hard-nosed defense, quick transition, and clutch composure.
What I would call luck is us winning the championship in season 99.
Honestly, I just wanted to see more from the team.
Frankie was lucky because most of the players he inherited where recruited by the hardworking boosters before his time (2007-2011).
I can only think of San Beda Alabang products Ryusei Koga and Melo Lim, and DLSU Team B Mychole Sorela as Frankie’s personal recruits.
I did not count the recruitment class of 2009 (Rome, Kyle Pascual, JP Mendoza, Mar Villahermosa and the Semerad twins). Rome was referred and recruited by the boosters. Kyle was secured by an alumnus (he even prevented him from going “green”). JP Mendoza and Villahermosa was passed to us after former Red Cub Dindo Pumaren was not renewed at UE. And the Semerad twins were a walk-on after visiting Letran and ADMU.
