NCAA season 101

Who are the players of EAC Team B? Was Cabiltes coaching? Perhaps Coach Jerson has something to prove. He’s I think a DLSU alumnus and with his accomplishments in the MPBL he was not among the candidates for the DLSU coaching gig a couple years back.

EAC has a lot (i mean A LOT) of small guards on their lineup such as Villarente, Devara, Tolentino, Ochavo et.al. Wonder how Coach Jerson will utilize them

the philosophy that pre-season games/tourneys are meant to learn/familiarize the system more than winning is paradoxical.. basketball is a competition the last time i checked.. players should be taught how to win (grit, perseverance, resilience, heart).. what good is running a system, only to be beaten by teams who really want to win and fight.. pag natatapat SBU sa teams na madiin maglaro, losartan agad first qtr pa lng..

I vividly remember before the FSA ban in the NCAA, SAn Beda was a fixture in the semis and finals of most Pre season tournaments. Even with UAAP teams parading their own FSA's, San Beda had the luxury of having better FSA's with SAm Ekwe, the late Su DAniel, Ola Adeugon and Donald Tankuoa vs their UAAP counterparts. Former SAn Beda Red Lions coaches also made sure that they would have a good mixture of TEam A and TEam B players. It resulted to multiple championships in the PCCL, Fil Oil, Fr. MArtin cup and pocket tournaments in the provinces. These will be just distant memories.

Damn I missed the era of Pong, caram. That Team Behold is QUALITY. Thats the definition of Quality over Quantity. IIRC players on team behold that time will not be over 10-12 players and all that 10-12 players are quality players. The last man that time was Gege Castillo but Gege can play ball actually UP have interest on him that time but he's to loyal to San Beda.

having a winning mentality should have no pre-season breaks..

The past coaches of SBU Frankie and Boyet, you can see how they coach in the preseason especially in the FilOil. Intense and badly want to win especially when SBU goes up against UAAP schools.

I remember Frankie and Boyet’s teams fielded a short rotation against powerhouse UAAP teams. It gives you a sense that these coaches treat them as if a playoff or final four game. And it rubs off to their players.

And what were the results of those preseason stint? 8 FilOil Finals appearances and 3 titles.

Another thing to note on Frankie and Boyet are the only full time college coaches at San Beda with no simultaneous coaching gigs in the PBA. I can think only of Koy Banal (Purefoods/BMEG), Ronnie Magsanoc (Meralco) and Jamike Jarin (Meralco) as the only SBU coaches who had coaching gigs as well in the PBA as assistant like Yuri (TNT).

Yes those two coaches instill winning mentality even though its pre season. And for Andrei Santos (lead assistant) should slide down and Boyet should be the lead assistant or Alex. Naging ojt tayo lol

No James Nacua in CSB's lineup in Pinoyliga Collegiate Cup? Is it goodbye Philippines like Konov?

He left the country a long time ago and Brodett said he's still finishing up some acads in australia. But also said he'll be back with a green school this year.

We used to take preseason and post season tournaments seriously even though we aren't full strength. Heck FL even paraded Ola against Greg and Kiefer even though he's doing residency. We managed to have decent showings and gave 100% until the last second..

Imagine how strong this team would be under Frankie Lim. Oh man, libre lang mangarap.

Actually I dont like FL in terms of his coaching but when it comes to discipline and winning attitude he is good with that.

Will prolly use the same pool when filoil comes around.
No Zenric Jarque. Coaching staff would have its hands full in trimming the 25 man list to 15 plus 3 reserves, not to mention some possible additions pa.

Strongly agree on these takes. I was there when San Beda finally won its first ever PCCL title in 2014 after multiple heartbreakings runners up finishes. The Red Lions beat a souped up La SAlle led by future 2x UAAP MVP and import stud Ben Mbala, former UAAP ROY and Mythical 5 member Jeron Teng, Jason Perkins, Thomas Torres, Jullian Sergeant, Abu Tratter, Prince Rivero, and rookies Kib Montalbo and Robert Bolick. Red Lions were led by eventual tournament MVP Ola Adeogun, Baser Amer, Art Dela Cruz, Dan SAra and a young JAvee Mocon. I also had the privilege of witnessing the 2017 Fil Oil Finals. SAn Beda beat La Salle with a Robert Bolick game winning 3 dagger over Santi Santillan. The Red Lions were led by Berto, Mocon, Soberano, Doliguez, Carino while La Salle was led by UAAP MVP and most dominant import in UAAP History Ben Mbala, SAnti SAntillan, Andrei Caracut, Ricci Rivero, Aljun Melecio and Justine Baltazar. Pre FSA ban, San Beda was not only there to partipate but rather to compete and win. Its all downhill after the ban and once Yuri handled the team. Petiks petiks na lang.

What exactly don’t you like about Coach Frankie’s coaching? Cause for me, I like his system way more than Yuri’s. Yuri’s like a one-trick pony—drive to the basket, kick out, hope someone hits a three. That’s it. Coach Frankie, on the other hand, played smart, flexible basketball. His teams could mix it up—run plays, go inside, push the pace, or slow it down. He actually knew how to adjust depending on the game.

Is Frankie Lim banned in San Beda cause of the fight? I remember he still coached the Altas so he's not banned in the NCAA

Frankie had no coaching experience prior to his appointment to SBU. He is not an X-and-O coach. More of a motivational type of coach. Doesn’t trust much his bench as he relies on an 8-10 man rotation even if the lead was 20 points. Parang 70s and 80s type.

He is lucky that he inherited a talented team.

His other problem is his recruitment style. Gusto nya sya nilalapitan ng potential recruits. There’s a long list of recruits that wanted to play for the Red Lions and some referred by boosters and alumnus to. But were all given the cold treatment.

Jason Perkins is one. But who are the others?

There was a long list. Silungan was one ?

On FL I remember the predictable and milked hi-lo plays when we can't run it anymore. On the other hand our players back then were ripped and well conditioned that we often ran teams off the gym.

Fil-Ams Igee King (son of San Beda/PBA legend Abe King) and Joshua Torralba went to EAC instead. Red Cub blue chip Art Dela Cruz after a successful 2009 championship run worked out several times with the Red Lions only to be offered a Team B slot by Frankie. Art went instead to Ateneo but came back because of the infamous spat with Ryan Buenafe. Fil-Am Mike Silungan was already practicing with RLs. But Frankie did not secure his commitment and left for UP the week after. The handlers of Greg Slaughter sent feelers he would like to matriculate to Mendiola. But Frankie declined because he was expecting a big Nigerian (who turned out to be Ola).

When Rome Dela Rosa was recruited, it was assumed Frankie would take the brother (Ellison?). Both joined the US training camp in Indiana (2009). But he did not took Ellison in favor of nepo kid Melo Lim.

I wouldn’t call it "luck" when a coach takes over a talented team and turns them into a dynasty. Talent is one thing, but sustaining dominance and instilling a championship mindset? That’s on the coach. You don’t win NCAA titles by just giving pep talks.

Coach Frankie might not be your typical Xs-and-Os clipboard genius, but he knew how to maximize the strengths of his players. His system wasn’t flashy, but it was disciplined, efficient, and effective. You could actually see the identity and grit in his teams hard-nosed defense, quick transition, and clutch composure.

What I would call luck is us winning the championship in season 99.

Honestly, I just wanted to see more from the team.
