NCAA Season 100

I see a Brendon Ocampo among the roster of mcu in pinoyliga. Is he the same ex bedan? He's joined by mark gabieta who's also listed in sbu's roster.

I hope TM Jude bags a big man. As we can see in SBU’s last two games (CEU and DLSU), RLs were decimated in the paint due to a lack of quality big men.

In the NCAA, we are ok with our bigs since there will be no big FSAs to contend with. We are preparing for the NCAA and our frontline is just right.

In the offseason tournaments where we are facing teams from the UAAP, NCRAA and others brandishing big and dominant FSAs, we will have a hard time against these teams because we are playing all-filipino.

Question is, are we going to spend money to recruit big and tall Fil-Foreigners to battle with dominant FSAs just to win the offseason leagues?

It is because I am doubtful Bismark Lina will not make it to S100. And Joe Celzo will have a hard time against the more talented CSB big Allen Liwag.

I was able to catch the CSB-DLSU PL Finals and the CSB bigs of Mara and Liwag played well defensively against DLSU’s FSA. And on offense Liwag gave the DLSU FSA a hard time on the 2-man PNR game. I was quite amazed how Liwag was able to stand toe-to-toe defensively. He has improved and got bigger.

I would say on paper SBU got better overall. But the big man rotation, I think is a downgrade from last year’s duo of Cuntapay and Jopia. Cuntapay has slow feet defensively but he compensates it with good 3-point shooting on offense. Jopia was a decent low post threat and was a shot block threat on defense.

Celzo is not a threat on offense. That’s why in certain instances Yuri downsizes and puts Yuki at the 5 to give SBU some offensive threat at the big man position.

The latest big man in the US recruitment scene. 6 foot 9 Dominic Sarmiento of the Tumakbo basketball. His profile says he graduated HS in 2022 and was born 2004.

Rumor has it that Sean Chambers and FEU have secured his commitment. But hope SBU has a shot in recruiting him when Jude goes there in a couple of weeks.

San Beda already got Sajonia, Celzo and Songcuya and even Jopia from them. If the kid already commited to them, just let him commit and play for them and stay away. You can get Pablo and Mangahas instead if you want

If dominic and feu have an understanding in principle I am sure Team RL officials will not dare touch him even with a ten foot pole.

Finally, Aaron Fermin getting a green light from coach Randy to join tournaments (after rehab), and might be included in South East Asian University games this June/July in Jakarta.

I hear you brother. Jude is not bothered about Bismarck. They're confident that he'll be ready to play in the second round. We have Etulle, Songcuya, Celzo, Jalbuena and Puno to man the paint and take care of the other teams' bigs. What's good about this is that our frontline need not score at all because we have heavy firepower from our wings and guards. But of course, it would be good if our bigs can contribute offensively too. And they can shoot. It is Celzo alone who is has limited range, relying on drop passes or put backs. That's good enough for me.

JC Bonzalida was the resident import stopper of the Baby Falcons last season especially in the finals against NUNS. He was guarding the 6'8 FSA of NUNS, knew how to push and box out out the FSA and contributed offensively to the team.

But of course, yes I agree that it would be an insurance if we can get 1 more tall FIL-FOR to ensure that we defend the crown successfully in the next 2-3 seasons at the very least. Offseason leagues are not my concern though. Except for the bragging rights, they don't count.

The problem with losing in pre season leagues is its bad pr for recruitment. It might no look good for prospects both local and abroad.

Jun Roque to Letran. But instead of Gov. Pineda, its Boss Frank in the picture. So he is also "helping" Letran now?

Its because allen ricardo is currently handling the srs team. He's an sga coach, and just warming the sit to whoever steps in the coming season. Don't expect gov to handle the team this year lalo most of his guys are still in residency, not to mention its gonna be election season soon and he's gunning for his last term by 2025. So technically letran srs should be an sga team next season. When season 101 comes along, frank lao and allen ricardo should handle over the team to gov and his peeps. Boss frank just doing this as a favor to his good friend.

The signs of gov taking over is already there, adding to it were non delta boy recruits like hubilla and delos reyes already moving to new teams.

Yes. I agree with you. But with FSAs playing for UAAP schools, it will be difficult to win. No one wants to lose, especially that we have a proud basketball tradition. Times have changed and the basketball landscape has evolved.

Our budget is no longer adequate to keep pace with the rat race competition from the UAAP schools. Ateneo, UP, NU and DLSU have bigger budgets. In the NCAA, Letran's jueteng money is hard to match. How can you compete with money that's not hard earned (illegal and immoral at that) and easy to spend without being accountable to investors?

It is unfortunate that team management chose long ago to rely heavily, if not solely, on MVP to finance the team. Recruitment is very difficult nowadays. That is why we have to manage our limited resources, be wise with spending, and be wise with recruitment. That is why I appreciate FEU's recruitment strategy. They scour the whole country for prospects and have landed undiscovered gems through the years. They have networks all over the country. This is a very good recruitment model because you don't have to compete with the top UAAP schools. Kung pera pera ang usapan mahirapan tayong lumaban.

Marunong lang dapat tayo mag alaga at magaling makisama sa mga provincial coaches and tournament organizers. It's a common sense approach to recruitment. Kaya lang hindi masyado nagagawa ng management. As of now, we still prefer going abroad to scout talents and compete with the rest of the schools who have more money to spend.

LIke you, I am frustrated with our losses in the pre-season. But looking at the big picture and the ultimate goal, we are still the best team in the NCAA. For this coming season at least.

GSBF!!!
