NBA signings and trades 2010-2011

The Atlanta Hawks have signed guard Damien Wilkins.

Isn't it sad that after 6 seasons in the NBA when this news was announced he was still referred to as "Dominique Wilkins nephew . . . Damien Wilkins." It seems that after close to 400 career games you would have built enough of your own reputation.

Or maybe it is sadder that he is never referred to as "Gerald Wilkins son."

Carmelo Anthony trade revisited

Carmelo Anthony trade revisited

Rumors starting again on the potential trade of Denver Nuggets superstar Carmelo Anthony.

Grounds for Basis on the rumors:

+ Allegations of Anthony intentionally limiting his production on the court for the past 3 games.

+ Anthony's dip in performance due to waning interest in playing for the Nuggets.

+ Anthony not willing to sign a $65 Million Contract Extension by the end of the NBA Trade Deadline.

+ Anthony will be a Unrestricted Free Agent this summer.

Also an article about the potential trade:

Post-Ups: Nuggets ready to move Melo

After weeks of speculation and despite a strong start by the Nuggets, Carmelo Anthony's last days in Denver may finally have arrived.

The Nuggets have all but decided to trade Anthony if he does not sign an extension with the team by the trade deadline, and Denver's management team believes Anthony is fully prepared to play out the season and become a free agent, multiple sources told CBSSports.com.

The Nuggets’ strong start, coupled with George Karl’s inspirational return from cancer treatment and positive discussions about a contract extension for the soon-to-be-1,000-win coach, have the organization feeling they've done everything possible to persuade Anthony to stay. But according to people with knowledge of the team’s strategy, if Anthony doesn’t agree to sign the three-year, $65 million extension by the Feb. 24 trade deadline, the wheels are all but certain to be put in motion to part ways with the three-time All-Star rather than lose him as a free agent and get nothing in return.

According to people in contact with the Nuggets’ management team, there is far more clarity today about what the team is seeking in a potential Anthony trade than there was in September, when new GM Masai Ujiri was thrust into the tempest in his initial days and weeks on the job. Executives believe the Nuggets have decided they would like to receive the best possible package of young players and are not interested in stopgap options that would hamper their flexibility. Acquiring a high-priced veteran player -- such as Andre Iguodala, whose talent the Nuggets value but not his contract -- would only hurt the team’s ability to build around youth while maintaining payroll flexibility into the uncertainty of a new collective bargaining agreement.

The Nets’ package of 2010 No. 3 pick Derrick Favors, guard Devin Harris, the expiring contract of Kris Humphries and two first-round picks remains the most attractive option to the Nuggets, sources say. Additional trade partners such as Charlotte and Utah are not eager to get involved in the discussions again, but wouldn’t necessarily be needed this time.

The wild card remains Anthony’s desire to sign an extension with the Nets, who obviously would not be willing to offer the same package without such a guarantee. While rival executives continue to doubt that Anthony would be willing to spend the next season-and-a-half in Newark, N.J., sources who have been in close contact with the power brokers in Anthony’s camp -- William Wesley and Leon Rose -- say the Nets remain an option for Anthony.

Anthony and the Nuggets will play Sunday at Madison Square Garden against the Knicks, which remain his top choice via a trade or free agency -- even though the latter option could cost him millions depending on how successful owners are at imposing salary reductions in the new collective bargaining agreement. Sources say Anthony is so fixated on winding up with the Knicks that Denver management has become convinced that he will tempt fate and the new CBA by playing out the entire season in Denver and signing with the Knicks as a free agent on July 1 – or after the lockout. The only way that scenario could be positive for Denver would be in a sign-and-trade deal. But such an arrangement – like the pennies-on-the-dollar deals that sent LeBron James and Chris Bosh to Miami – would not be nearly as beneficial as what the Nets are offering now.

The Knicks, playing their best basketball in years with free-agent acquisition Amar’e Stoudemire, have believed that their best chance of landing Melo was for the process to play out slowly – and they’ve gotten their wish so far. But the Nuggets, sources say, are not sold on the young players New York could offer such as Anthony Randolph, Danilo Gallinari and Wilson Chandler. Point guard Raymond Felton -- who has been on an offensive tear since gaining chemistry with Stoudemire and who becomes trade-eligible on Dec. 15 -- also does not interest the Nuggets, who view him as a halfcourt player who wouldn't fit their style.

Nuggets officials are said to be coming around to the idea that Harris could play in the backcourt with Chauncey Billups, who often played shooting guard this past summer with Team USA. But if Anthony is traded, sources say management also wants to show Billups -- who came to the Nuggets not just to come home, but to win -- the proper respect by engaging him in conversations about whether he'd prefer to be traded.

Other than hoping to persuade Anthony to sign the extension and stay in Denver, the biggest variable for the Nuggets is the sliding scale of quality on the Nets’ own first-round pick they’d convey in the trade. (They also would include Golden State’s protected 2012 first-rounder). The sooner the Nuggets trade Melo to New Jersey, the better the Nets get and the worse the pick gets. But that is a matter of timing and patience. As far as willingness to deal, it appears that the Nuggets are finally open for business.

The Golden State Warriors have signed point guard Acie Law, who was recently waived by the Memphis Grizzlies in December 4. This is the second time Law will join the Warriors since being traded by the Atlanta Hawks in 2009 to Golden State alongside Speedy Claxton for guard Jamal Crawford.

To make room for Law, the Golden State Warriors have waived rookie forward Jeff Adrien.

There has been a trade involving the Los Angeles Lakers, Houston Rockets and New Jersey Nets.

The Los Angeles Lakers have sent guard Sasha Vujacic and a 2011 First Round Draft Pick to the New Jersey Nets in exchange for veteran forward Joe Smith from the Nets.

The New Jersey Nets in turn sends guard Terrence Williams to the Houston Rockets in exchange for the Rockets' 2012 First Round Draft Pick.

The Sacramento Kings received guard Jermaine Taylor and cash considerations in exchange for a future second round draft pick.

I like Terrence Williams, I think this is a very good deal for Houston.

I wonder if the Russian Lobby had anything to do with this trade regarding Vujacic :D (as in: The Sharapova - Prokhorov connection  :p)

Wow!! That is a blockbuster trade!!
Magic get: Jason Richardson, Hedo Turkoglu, Earl Clark and G.Arenas.
Suns get: Vince Carter, Marcin Gortat, M.Pietrus, future draft pick and $$$.
Wizards get: Rashard Lewis.
Phoenix gave up a good player in Richardson and a mediocre player in Turkoglu, but they got back Carter, Pietrus, and Gortat. They need Pietrus' defense and they should be able to use Gortat down low. Carter is still a serviceable veteran. Good trade for Phoenix.

Orlando gave up Carter, Gortat, Pietrus, Lewis and a draft pick, but they got back Turkoglu and Arenas. If Turkoglu returns to his awesome self from his last time in Orlando, this team will be magnificent. Arenas will definitely be a big help because he'll get some points on the board, something they need after losing Lewis and Carter. Orlando is suddenly a little smaller up front though. That could be a problem against Boston, but not Miami.

Washington? Well, everybody knew they wanted to get rid of Arenas so that John Wall could be the head of their team. Lewis has a hugely over-inflated salary, which hurts the team. Not sure how much he has left on his salary, but that might have been a bad move for them.

I do believe Phoenix got the best deal out of this trade....but it's true if Turkoglu can play like he previously played in Orlando that would be awesome for them... Turkoglu just never fit in the system with either the Raptors or the Suns... He just seemed so out of place with both these teams.

Pietrus is athletic and can run so this should be good for Nash.. Carter isn't in his prime years but still is a great shooter and slasher. Gortat is an additional big man for the Suns who surely sorely miss Amare.

As for Washington, Lewis is a really good player but as mentioned he is wayyyyyyyy overpaid... He is currently the 2nd highest paid player in the NBA with 20.5$ million (He signed a 118$ million 6 year deal in 2007). He has approx. $47.28 million left over 2 years to be paid so that is a ridiculous amount (average of $23.64 million per year !!) You can check his salaries from previous years here:

I agree with you.. However, Gentry's biggest challenge will be to find playing time for everybody..
Suns 12-player roster:
Steve Nash
Vince Carter
Grant Hill
Channing Frye
Robin Lopez
Goran Dragic
Josh Childress
Jared Dudley
Hakim Warrick
Marcin Gortat
Michael Pietrus
Earl Barron.
Despite not having any major superstar other than Nash, PHX is a very deep team.. At least 11 of those players should be considered as good players in the NBA.

Well if you think of it that's actually better on the long run. Teams that usually do good in the playoffs are the ones that have a deep bench. Nash, Hill, and Carter shouldn't be playing extensive minutes... They are all well into their 30's and coach should play them smart not to risk any injuries and keep them healthy.. Main problem other than players' playing times is for coach Gentry to find the best group that play together and maintaining chemistry on the team... Let's hope Carter, Pietrus and Gortat can play with Nash..

So you don't think very much of Orlando getting Arenas and Turkoglu, huh? Yes, it's a big question if Turk can play like he did previously in Orlando. I think Turk played a lot when Jameer Nelson was injured, so it could be different this time.

But is getting Carter/Pietrus/Gortat worth sacrificing Jason Richardson? Hmm. I guess you're right - it is. Carter can play with Nash and Gortat's abilities beg for more playing time. (Can Gortat run? I don't know). Plus, Phoenix gets a nice little draft pick next year. I think you're right, Phoenix wins this.

Yeah, that's a ridiculous salary for an over-rated role player.

Phoenix is deep. You're right. They're loaded at the SF spot: Childress,Hill, Warrick, Dudley, Pietrus, sometimes Frye, sometimes Carter...I imagine they'll try to get another PF for one of those guys. Or some draft picks.

The Memphis Grizzles have been working out Veteran NBA guards Larry Hughes and Ronald "Flip" Murray. General Manager Chris Wallace said that the signing of either players are being weighted.

I'm so sick of this Carmelo Anthony crap. I really dislike all these players who sign contracts and then try to back out.

He's got a great situation in Denver. I really don't know what the problem is for him.

I agree with you Matt. Say what you want about Lebron and yes he broke Cleveland fans hearts with "The Decision", but at least he played his contract out and didn't demand to be traded, mid-season. Once a player's contract is up, it's his choice whether he stays with his current team or goes elsewhere. It might not always be a popular decision, but it is what it is.
In Carmelo's case, he's acting like a spoiled child. I don't know what is really wrong with the situation he has in Denver. If they add one or two more good pieces, they could be right in the hunt to be contender. I guess he's just blinded by the big lights of the New York area. Remember, the Nets will be moving to Brooklyn in the near future.

It's like my high school band teacher told me my junior year: "Matt, you signed up for band, so you need to practice. If you don't want to take band next year, that's fine. But you're taking it this year."

They need a guard upgrade (Billups, Aflalo, Carter, Ty Lawson) and maybe somebody else behind Carmelo (besides JR Smith). That's it. That's all this team can ask for. Otherwise, they're still in the middle of the play-off race in the West. That's a good team. If he goes to New Jersey, who is he going to have? Rip Hamilton? Anthony Morrow? Brook Lopez is OK, but I'd rather have Nene/Kenyon.

Still, the fact of the matter is what you said. Carmelo has a contract. He needs to play through it without whining.

Denver is a beautiful city, though. I was there once. Lots of culture, seems to have a nightlife, nice people...

Carmelo Trade Talks With Nets Fizzles Out

Carmelo Trade Talks With Nets Fizzles Out

The New Jersey Nets has ended all speculations of a Carmelo Anthony-trade on Wednesday. Mikhail Prokhorov, the Nets Russian owner, has officially announced they will be backing out of a possible Melo trade.

So, what will happen to the Nets? I think they will still be languishing at the bottom of the Atlantic Division with an 11-31 record. It's an excellent management decision for Prokhorov to back out from the trade talks with the Denver Nuggets. Proposals were made so that both teams will get fair deals.

It's a welcome development for Carmelo that the trade was not consummated since the Nets is not a contender for playoffs yet. His possible trade would have been a good investment for the Nets in rebuilding their team.

The door is now open for the New York Knicks to offer possible trade talks with Denver. The Knicks with its 22-19 record in the East (I think) would be a better alternative for Carmelo to strut his wares. A possible Amare-Stoudemire tandem is a great combo to deal with. Melo is a good fit for D'Antoni's run-and-gun style basketball.

So much for the Melo trade talks. Let's us watch more for other developments with NBA trades.
