We all know that "The Diesel" ain´t anymore the Larger than Life that we once witnessed from the mid 90s to 2005. With this season´s numbers such as 15ppg, 7rpg & 2bpg are nothing compared to the 30ppg, 14rpg & 3.5bpg during his peak.

Hence, the torch this season has been passed on to guys such as "Ming Dynasty" (Yao) or "D-12" (Dwight) or even "The Big Fundamental" even though so many journalist, analysts and reporters claim that he is a power forward.

Now let us see your choice on who is the NBA´s best centre in terms of individual ability and team performance.

INDIVIDUAL ABILITY

Defence
Inditimidation
Energy
Shotblocking ability
Defensive Rebounding
As a weakside helper

Offence
Mid range jumper
Inside scoring ability
Back to the basket moves
Effectiveness in the post
Offensive Rebounding

TEAM PERFORMANCE

Performance in the regular season
Performance in the post season

OTHER QUESTIONS

How valuable is he for the team both offensively and defensively?
How much can he change the game on both ends?
How much does the opposition need to adjust their defensive and offensive strategies once he enters the game?

I voted for Yao, since Howard and Stoudamire aren't real centers in my opinion. Of the other ones, he's the most complete scorer and blocker, even not being a great defender.

that is ridiculous.. how many of these people are true centers? and where's Ilgauskas?

ridiculous...

btw, I think Yao might be the best with Ilgas in strong second.

and yeah, Gasol is top-class as well.

now, GTF out of here! Add Ilgauskas and Gasol or we will find you and will destroy you

Chris Kaman, Andrew Bogut? Are you laughing on us?

1. Yao Ming
2. Ilgauskas/Gasol
3. Ilgauskas/Gasol.

I still voted 4 Shaq! I mean, he's not in his best years, but I don't c anyone being able 2 fill in 4 his role in the league. Yao is too thin and soft, Stoudemire is a center only in Phoenix(with Boris Diaw as his backup!!!:p ), Howard is a bit raw, he is the next best thing probably but still needs time, Duncan is the best power forward in the league, but not a center, Gasol is also good, but not so consistent in his performances. Besides, a reason 4 O'Neal's performance drop, apart from age and injuries, in that he is the No2 option 4 the Heat. We know that everything is a matter of roles in the NBA after all. I could also add that he seems rather unmotivated after winning a title with Miami too. I wonder how he would do in another team.

Erm..some of these guys arent even centers but Power Forwards:/

And wheres Big-Z and Pau? You dont consider them good centers?

Okay ... take it easy buddies... well I added my fellow countryman because I am patriotic and I am huge fan of Bogut. I just added Kaman just as a joke :D ... in reality Big Z definitely deserves to be there ... sorry I forgot and in terms of Gasol I alway thought he was a power forward but nowadays he is playing more at the centre position.

Ilgauskas is the 2nd best Natural Center in the Eastern Conference.

Wow, I can't believe that there is actually a debate about this. For me, it's obvious that Yao is the best center. And not only is he the best center in the NBA, but he's also the best center on the planet. In any league or competition, he just dominates other teams. Opposing teams have to double/triple team him and play zone just to stunt him a little, and even then his jump shot is so smooth that he can just turn and pop it in. When he is hacked, he goes to the line and gets his two points.

Dwight Howard is good, no doubt about that. He's got a wonderful power game. But do you guys think he sees the same defense that Yao sees? No way. I've only seen Howard play one game this season, but in that game the one-on-one defense was pretty weak. Yao spends his time fighting against double and triple teams.

Not only that, but Yao is far superior in international events, where defenses are much more rigid and powerful.

Just fill in Saski's chart:

Defence
Inditimidation - Yao can block anybody, forcing teams to make jumpers
Energy - Howard is like a 15-year-old on a coffee binge
Shotblocking ability - Camby
Defensive Rebounding - Camby
As a weakside helper - Yao always knows what is happening

Offence
Mid range jumper - Yao, Big Z, Okur, Duncan
Inside scoring ability - Yao, Howard, Shaq
Back to the basket moves - Yao
Effectiveness in the post - Yao, Duncan, Howard
Offensive Rebounding - Big Z

TEAM PERFORMANCE
Performance in the regular season - They're all pretty good
Performance in the post season - Shaq, Big Z

OTHER QUESTIONS
How valuable is he for the team both offensively and defensively? Yao is the anchor for the Rockets and Team China
How much can he change the game on both ends? Yao is the best of those centers at forcing other teams to change their plans and styles
How much does the opposition need to adjust their defensive and offensive strategies once he enters the game? - Yao simply forces adjustments in every aspect of the game

Face it. Never ever will there be anyone like Shaq.

The best center now?

Who else, but the NBA's 2007-2008 MVP, Dwight Howard.

I voted Yao. On top of the qualities mentioned by other members, he's an excellent free-throw shooter.

i think Dwight Howard be new Shaq...and his performerce in start this season...nice

Something relevant to Kaman:

Kaman worked with a neurosurgeon this summer to help improve his focus, the Los Angeles Times reports.

Prior to this season, Kaman had difficulty remembering plays and it affected his performance. As a two-year old, he was diagnosed with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). But in July, the neurosurgeon informed him his classification from childhood was wrong. Kaman is in the midst of a breakout season, averaging 17.9 points, 13.7 rebounds and 3.0 blocks.

regarding ilgauskas..

the title of this thread is passing of torch from the diesel..

z is already 30+.. how can u pass the torch to someone younger than you by 2-3 yrs.

i voted dwight howard.. the beast in the east..(just like shaq before)

(neways, i hope someone can match the 35pts 26rebs 15blks by shaq)

Why is Andrew Bynum not in the list?

He's the one!!!!

I have to agree on this one. He's really going to be an impact player though Dwight Howard's next in line

No way, guys. Maybe when Yao is injured (like now), one of them is better. But for now, Yao is by far the best. He's got everything: offense, defense, and plenty of Gatorade. :D
