NBA Player Injuries 2010-2011 Season

Nash leaves game with 'stinger' after collision

DALLAS (AP) -- Phoenix guard Steve Nash has left Friday night's game against the Dallas Mavericks with what the Suns termed a "stinger."

With 7:17 left in the first quarter, Nash and Mavericks center Tyson Chandler collided while going for a loose ball in the Phoenix backcourt. Nash's neck appeared to drive into Chandler's hip, and Nash was down for several minutes before limping to the bench.

Nash was replaced by Goran Dragic, and a few minutes later the Suns announced that Nash would miss the rest of the game.

Blazers' Roy to miss three games with sore knee

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) -- Trail Blazers guard Brandon Roy will miss the next three games because of a sore left knee.

The three-time All-Star also missed three games earlier this season with knee trouble, and coach Nate McMillan has at times limited Roy's minutes.

Roy is averaging 16.9 points per game, falling behind LaMarcus Aldridge in scoring for the Blazers. Roy's also averaging three rebounds and 3.3 assists per game.

He has averaged 6.7 points on 24.3 percent shooting over the last three games - all Portland losses.

The Blazers host the Minnesota Timberwolves on Friday night.

Roy will be reevaluated next week.

Roy's performances this season have greatly been affected due to his nagging injuries, that's for sure...

Kings' Thompson out three games with injured finger

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) -- The Sacramento Kings say forward Jason Thompson will miss the next three games after having stitches put into his injured right ring finger.

Thompson hurt himself in Friday's loss to Oklahoma City and the team announced Saturday that he would be sidelined. Thompson is averaging 7.6 points and 5.8 rebounds.

The Kings also said big man DeMarcus Cousins did not practice Saturday with a sore right ankle and wrist. He is questionable for Sunday's home game against Houston.

Sore right ankle sidelines Raptors' Bargnani

TORONTO (AP) -- Toronto Raptors center Andrea Bargnani didn't dress for Sunday's game against the Los Angeles Lakers because of a sore right ankle.

Bargnani sat out Wednesday's loss to Chicago but scored 32 points and pulled down nine rebounds in Friday's 98-92 win over New Jersey.

The seven-foot Italian is averaging 21.4 points and 5.8 rebounds.

Rookie Ed Davis started in his place at center. Raptors guard Sonny Weems also didn't dress for his second straight game because of back spasms.

Bulls' Gibson still out after concussion

CHICAGO (AP) -- Forward Taj Gibson was inactive for Chicago's game against Philadelphia on Tuesday, apparently still suffering from the effects of a concussion sustained last Saturday.

Gibson, hurt in a 100-99 home loss to the Clippers, is the second Chicago big man lost in the past week and how long he might be inactive is unknown. Forward Joakim Noah underwent surgery on his right thumb last Thursday and will miss eight to 10 weeks.

Gibson was averaging 9.3 points and 6.2 rebounds in 24 appearances, including 15 starts.

Clippers' Smith out two weeks with back woes

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Clippers forward Craig Smith will miss at least two weeks with a herniated disc in his lower back.

The Clippers said the reserve forward had an epidural injection Tuesday. He'll be re-evaluated next month.

Smith is averaging 5.8 points and 2.9 rebounds in 24 games with the Clippers, who beat Minnesota on Monday night for their first three-game winning streak of the season.

The Clippers also are without starting center Chris Kaman, who is out until at least next month with an injured left ankle, and reserve forward Brian Cook, who has missed two games with a sprained right ankle.

Magic rookie Orton has knee surgery

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) -- Orlando Magic rookie center Daniel Orton is recovering from arthroscopic surgery on his left knee.

The procedure was performed Thursday morning. Orton is not expected to begin practicing again until at least February.

The 6-foot-10, 255-pound center was the 29th overall pick in the NBA draft after playing only one season at Kentucky. Orton missed all of training camp with knee injuries, which have plagued him since high school.

Then he was assigned to the Magic's NBA Development League affiliate in New Mexico, but he reinjured the knee in his second game.

Orton wrote on Twitter that the doctor told him the surgery went "better than he expected." Orton is a long-term project for the Magic and wasn't expected to see much playing time this season.

Cavs' Powe has knee surgery, out six weeks

CLEVELAND (AP) -- The Cleveland Cavaliers say forward Leon Powe had surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee and will miss about six weeks.

Powe had the successful procedure Friday after an MRI exam revealed the injury, which was originally believed to be a bone bruise.

Powe overcame a torn ACL in his left knee while playing for Boston during the 2009 playoffs to play 20 games with the Cavaliers in 2009-10. He has appeared in 14 games this season, averaging 5.0 points.

Barnes Suffers Tear of Lateral Meniscus

Lakers reserve forward Matt Barnes suffered a tear of the lateral meniscus of his right knee in the first half of Friday evening’s game against New Orleans and will need surgery.

His knee was classified as a sprain during the game before diagnostic tests were taken, and the MRI exam on Saturday morning confirmed the tear.

The Lakers will avoid giving a time table on the injury until after the surgery, likely to be early next week, though an exact date is currently being determined.

In 37 games for the Lakers, Barnes averaged 7.4 points, 4.8 rebounds and 0.70 steals while along with Ron Artest being charged with defending the opposing team’s best wing players. While Barnes is out, Artest’s minutes are expected to go up, while Luke Walton and rookie Devin Ebanks could also see increased roles.

Nowitzki misses 7th straight game with injury

DALLAS (AP) -- Dallas Mavericks top scorer Dirk Nowitzki missed his seventh straight game with a sprained right knee when he was inactive Saturday night against the Orlando Magic.

Nowitzki attempted to run at practice on Thursday, but he experienced pain and was told by the team's medical staff to shut down the workout.

When Nowitzki sustained the injury on Dec. 27 in a game at Oklahoma City, he thought he'd be out for only a short time. But he hasn't healed as quickly as he hoped, and remains listed as day-to-day.

"I guess I don't have a lot of experience with knee injuries - and that's a good thing," Nowitzki told the Dallas Morning News. "I never thought when this first happened that I was going to miss two weeks ... I guess I took the situation a little too lightly."

Nowitzki averages 24.1 points.

Earlier in the week, the Mavericks learned that No. 3 scorer Caron Butler was probably out for the season with a torn tendon in his right knee.

Nets point guard Devin Harris out with leg injury

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) -- New Jersey point guard Devin Harris missed the Nets' game against the Milwaukee Bucks on Saturday night because of a bruised right leg.

Harris, averaging 16.6 points and a team-high 6.8 assists, bruised his right quadriceps Friday night in a second-quarter collision with Washington Wizards guard Kirk Hinrich.

Nets coach Avery Johnson said Harris got treatment for his quad Saturday morning and again hours before the game but wasn't able to play. Jordan Farmar replaced Harris in the starting lineup.

Hill leaves Suns' game with knee sprain

PHOENIX (AP) -- Veteran forward Grant Hill was forced to leave the Phoenix Suns' game against the Cleveland Cavaliers on Sunday night with a sprained right knee and will not return.

Hill, 38, was hurt when he collided with Cleveland rookie Manny Harris under the Suns' basket with 7:53 remaining in the first quarter. He fell to the floor and was down for a few minutes before being helped off the court. He then walked unaided to the locker room.

Before his injury, Hill had slipped twice in nearly the same area.

Hill has started all 35 Suns games this season and is averaging 14.5 points, 4.8 rebounds and 2.5 assists.

When you're 38 and get even such a minor injury it still might take a while to recover... Hope Hill comes back soon and thank God it wasn't his ankle :D

Cavs' Varejao out for season with ankle injury

CLEVELAND (AP) -- The losses won't stop for the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Scrappy, steady center Anderson Varejao is done for the season with a torn ankle tendon that will require surgery, another major blow to the bottoming-out Cavs, who are not close to recovering after star LeBron James left as a free agent last summer.

"It's a big blow," first-year coach Byron Scott said in Phoenix before the Cavaliers played the Suns. "Arguably, he's been our best player."

Varejao got hurt while running in practice on Thursday as the Cavs prepared for a five-game road trip. He was placed in a walking boot and traveled with the team. He missed Friday's game against Golden State as team doctors waited for his injury to "calm down."

On Sunday, he underwent a second MRI in Phoenix that revealed "a complete tear of the peroneus longus in the midfoot of the right ankle and foot."

Varejao's injury will likely require surgery. After a stop in Los Angeles to see family, he will return to Cleveland for further treatment and evaluation.

Scott said Varejao was injured when he was running up and down the court during a simple drill.

"He was just running," Scott said. "Then he planted, touched the line and ran to the other end. And then he just buckled.

"I feel terrible because of the way he's been playing."

It's more devastating news for the Cavs, who dropped their 10th straight on Sunday night, 108-100 to the Suns and have lost 20 of 21. Varejao, averaging a team-best 9.7 rebounds and 9.1 points, is also the team's best interior defender and provides constant energy with his hustle.

Scott has tried to stay optimistic amid the Cavs' mounting losses and injuries. The team is also without guard Daniel "Boobie" Gibson (ankle) and forward Leon Powe (knee surgery) on the trip and forwards Anthony Parker (back) and Joey Graham (leg) have been slowed by injuries.

At 8-28, the Cavs have the worst record in the Eastern Conference. With James, they had the league's best regular-season record the past two years.

It seems Lebron cast an evil spell on Cleveland right after the fans burned his jerseys when he left them for Miami :D.
The Cavs surely are in quite a predicament and could end up with the worst record in the NBA this season.

The Cavs surely are in quite a predicament and could end up with the worst record in the NBA this season.
This is awful. We started out so well. Through the first 15 games, we were doing really well. Now we've got too many injuries. The saving grace about Varejao's injury is that maybe now JJ Hickson can show what he has....but I'd much rather have a healthy Varejao.

Beasley misses practice with ankle injury

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- Minnesota Timberwolves forward Michael Beasley did not practice on Monday with an ankle injury and is questionable for the game against San Antonio on Tuesday.

Beasley was hurt on Sunday night against the Spurs in San Antonio. He rolled his ankle and was limited to 11 minutes while scoring just two points in the 94-91 loss.

Beasley first injured his ankle on Friday night against the Portland Trail Blazers. Beasley also fell hard on his hip in that game, but said after practice on Monday that the ankle was the only issue that could affect his availability for the next game.

The Timberwolves say Beasley will be evaluated again on Tuesday before the game.

Beasley leads the team in scoring at 21.9 points per game.

Kings' Evans still sidelined with a sprained ankle

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Sacramento Kings leading scorer Tyreke Evans remains sidelined with a sprained left ankle.

Coach Paul Westphal says Evans will not play in Tuesday night's game at Washington and is doubtful for Wednesday's game at Boston.

Evans is averaging 17.2 points. The second-year guard was hurt in the first quarter of last week's win over Denver but finished the game.

Evans then missed the first game of the Kings' six-game road trip, a loss at Toronto on Sunday.

Wizards' Howard out seven to 10 more days with sore knee

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Washington Wizards swingman Josh Howard will be sidelined at least another week to 10 days with a sore left knee.

Howard has missed three games and parts of two others since the knee started acting up again in late December. He tore a ligament in the same knee 11 months ago, had surgery and missed the final 28 games last season and the first 24 this season.

Coach Flip Saunders said Monday the team will have someone come in to reevaluate the knee over the next few days.

Howard has played in only eight games this season. He is averaging 7.9 points and 3.3 rebounds.
