NBA Lockout 2011

NBA Lockout 2011

Talk about the Lockout here. We'll monitor the situation and do post about progress on the labor talks during its duration.

Reminds me of 1998. The rookies from the 2011 Draft are currently unsigned to contracts. All teams are greatly affected as their momentum hits a grinding halt.

EDIT:

Also discuss NBA Players such as free agents or signed players that happen to play elsewhere.

Will Bismack Biyombo and Kemba Walker remain the Bobcats members or will they bring their talents to other leagues?

Some of the NBA players will just bring their talents to other leagues. Lol.

Durant forgot about Lockout

Durant forgot about Lockout

Kevin Durant is the youngest Union Representative for the Oklahoma City Thunder franchise in the Player Union. Durant told reporters that he forgot about the NBA Lockout and lost track of time this summer.

One of the reasons why Players Union should appoint a Veteran NBA player as Union Representative. Which is why Derek Fisher is the President of the Players Association.

He's apparently a very busy man these days. Lol. :D:p
Yo KD! Don't ya read the news?

Will Summer League be played? Do Lockout contain it? I dont know NBA Format well.

The NBA cancelled the NBA Las Vegas Summer League back in March in anticipation of the NBA Lockout. Also the supposed NBA Europe Live Tour 2011 was also cancelled.

I read the news in the Cavaliers site about their July 11 deadline to use US$14.6 million for a sign-and-trade for a player (from the LBJ deal) without having to match salaries.

Has this happened before in the 1998-99 lockout? If so, do you know how it was dealt with?

Hypothetical Question

If lockout is whole season and drafted players don't play during this time, do they become eligible for 2012 draft?

I remember some rule that if a drafted player sits out a whole season they're eligible for draft again.

I don't think it works like that because if there is no season, everyone would not be playing so they wouldn't be the only ones doing that.

Kobe Bryant might take part in exhibition games in China
Kobe Bryant and his agent, Rob Pelinka, are trying to put together a tour to China by NBA players, says Minnesota Timberwolves rookie Derrick Williams, who also is represented by Pelinka. The games likely would be played in Shanghai.

Kobe Bryant may take his talents to China during the NBA's lockout.

There are preliminary talks about a basketball tour to China this summer — and perhaps beyond — in which the Lakers superstar, who has called China a "home away from home" and has an enormous following there, would be the headliner with several other NBA stars forming two or three barnstorming teams.

Bryant and his agent Rob Pelinka are trying to put together the tour, said Minnesota Timberwolves rookie forward Derrick Williams, who is also represented by Pelinka.

Williams said several clients of Pelinka's agency, the Landmark Sports Agency, could be involved in the tour.

"Hopefully I would be able to do that because I've never been out of the country and I think that would be the best thing for me," said Williams, the former La Mirada High and University of Arizona star who was drafted second overall in June's NBA draft.

Pelinka's agency lists 18 NBA players as clients, including Clippers Chris Kaman and Eric Gordon, along with former USC star and Memphis Grizzlies guard O.J. Mayo, and Chicago Bulls forward Carlos Boozer.

If the barnstorming tour happens, the games are likely to take place at the state-of-the-art Mercedes-Benz Arena in Shanghai. Bryant signed a three-year deal with Mercedes-Benz in February to become the brand ambassador for Smart micro cars in China and he has already been featured in a TV commercial for the car.

Pelinka declined to comment.

One interesting name on the potential list of NBA players on the tour is Lakers guard Derek Fisher, who is a Pelinka client.

Fisher is also the president of the NBA players union, which has battled the owners in a lengthy labor dispute that culminated with the owners imposing a lockout of players at 12:01 a.m. Eastern time Friday, when the previous labor agreement expired.

It's unclear how long the lockout will last.

If Fisher took part in an overseas tour, it could be seen as a slap in the face to the NBA. A call to Fisher's publicist was not immediately returned.

The trade exception will expire regardless if there is a lockout. Same thing happened in 1998 where trade exceptions expired.

Is he even allowed to do that?

Technically yes, but if Gasol does get seriously injured, his contract can be terminated by the Lakers. There are also repercussions on signing contracts when there is an existing contract.

Thanks. i knew there'd be consequences for injury instances. i wonder if there's a published rule regarding this one not only for Gasol-Lakers but for other contracts as well.

The min-level guys will most likely risk it, but for high-profile and high-salary players like Gasol?

Also, I forgot to to mention that any players with an existing contract in an NBA Team will need a Letter of Clearance from FIBA to sign a contract during the duration of the lockout.

Negotiations between the player, NBA Team and Foreign Team will result to a "structured deal" wherein compromises are integrated that more often than not, favors the NBA team as they hold the rights to that player by virtue of the contract.

This is among the hindrances that an overteam club must undertake to sign an NBA Player that has an existing contract with an NBA Team.

Baumann speaks about NBA Lockout

Baumann speaks about NBA Lockout

FIBA Secretary General Patrick Baumann gave his views on the NBA Lockout:

“The lockout is very bad news for the basketball fans in the US and around the world,” said FIBA Secretary General and IOC member, Patrick Baumann. “But it is obvious that a sustainable business model, fair to all parties, is needed, especially in these times of gloomy economic environment. This is not valid only in the US, but everywhere in the basketball world in order for our sport to continue its growth. We hope that the parties will find rapidly a solution, but above all we hope that the situation will not have a negative effect on the Olympic qualifiers this summer. We will do everything to support the players and our members in their desire to fulfill their Olympic dream.”
